1 Oil And Gas Developments n Ohio During 99 BY R L ALKRE* MEMBER AlME A total of,0 wells were reported drilled in the search for new oil and gas production in of Ohio's 88 counties during the year 99 Of these, were successful and resulted in dry holes; an average of 0 per centfailures This is 0 less than the, canpleted in 98 The reduction is partially due to the sharp decline in the price of crude oil which began' in the late monthsof 98 and continued into the following spring The market stabilized duringthe summer of 99 and drilling operations began to recover The dry hole ratio of 0 per cent is per cent greater than 98 and approximately the same amount for the preceding 0-year period The initial average daily oil production of 8 bbl is an increase of 0 bbl per well over 98 The 7 Mcf initial for gas is a decrease of Mcf per well For the preceding 0-year period, corresponding averages were bbl and 89 Mcf The AP oil reserves reporti gives 99 production as,8,9 bbl Extensions and revisions amounted to,,000 bbl, or a depletion of 88,9 bbl, which brought reserves on Dec', 99 to 7,70,0 bbl The AGA report onnatura, gas reserves shows that Ohio produced, exclusive of gas from underground storage, 7,000,000 Mcf Extensions and discoveries added,89,000 Mcf Consequently, the reserves totaled 8,'97,000 Mcf at the end of 99 DEPTH OF Approximately 0 per cent of all wells drilled were seeking production in the Clinton sand The Berea sand accounted for per cent lie total footage drilled during the year was,9,97 ft Of this 97,78 ft resulted in new gas wells,,9 ft in oil wells,,8 ft in combination oil and gas, and 90,0 ft in dry holes The depth of the average drilling was, ft, as compared to,8 ft in the year 98 Two Sub-Trenton wells were drilled The deeper was the Benedum-Trees No Eichenburg-Franz, Lot 0, Tract, Highland Heights Township, Cuyahoga County, which encountered a show of oil- and a small quantity of gas in the St Peter horizon After acid treatment the well was reported to have made bbl of oil and 8 bbl of salt Manuscript received at the office of the nstitute, April, 90 *Petroleum Geologist, Geological Survey of, Ohio; Columbus improved Reserves of Crude O i l, ~ a t u r Gas ~ l Liquids and ~atural Gas pub ished jointly by American Gas ~ssociat ion and American Petroleum nstitute Vol U Dec, 99 water per day t was later abandoned at total depth of,70 ft,the other was the Pico Oil Co No William Armentrout, Section 7, Scioto Township, Pike County The St Peter horizon was encountered at,007 ft and the well, was later bottomed at,0 ft A show of oil and gas was reported inor immediately below the St Peter, but efforts to set casing to shut off salt water found in the lower portion of the St Peter were' unsuccessful and the well was abandoned The deepest Clinton well was the Mc Cune No Fee, Section, Goshen Township, Mahoning County, dry and abandoned at,0 ft n Section, Rose Township, Carroll County, The East Ohio Gas Co, No G R & C W Aston was dry in the Clinton at,0 ft n Section 0, Manchester Township, Morgan County, the Wiser & Morrow No Margaret Dye was dry in the Medina at,0 ft n Jefferson County, Section, Salem Township, The EastOhio Gas Co, No H Ri R Muesegaes was dry in the Oriskany and abandoned at,970 ft The deepest Ohio (Devonian) shale well was the mperial Glass No Cityof Ekllaire, Pultney Township, Belmont County, which was dry and abandoned at,0 ft,, ft below the base of the Berea sand The average depth of all wells drilled in Ohio by horizons was as follows: Shallow Sands Ekrea Ohis Shale Oriskany Newburg, Clinton Medina Trenton, sub-~ren ton,0 ft,9,,7,0,,0,9 (Chiefly Western Ohio),0 Perry County was the most active during the year with 0 wells The Clinton was the objective of 8 of these tests and they resulted in 9 gas wells, oil wells, combination oil and gas wells, and dry holes The most active area in the county was Hopewell Township, where wells were drilled Ashland County 'closely followed Perry in the number of wells with a total of 0 Berea sand production was most sought with 9 tests resulting in gas wells, oil wells, 9 combination oil and gas wells, and dry holes Perry Township was the most active area in the County n total number of wells drilled, Monroe County followed Ashland with 7; Washington, 7; Muskingum, 7; Knox, ; and Athens County with 0 LARGE The largest gas well was completed in May by National Gas &'Oil Corp on the C G Longshore farm in Section, Brush Creek Township, Muskingum County ts reported initial open-flow natural was 0, Mcf with lb rock
