1 Unit: Plants Pretend and Learn Theme: Rock Museum Kindergarten Pretend and Learn Lesson Whole Group Introduction to Center Center Introduction Before a new Pretend and Learn area is made available to students during center time it should be introduced to the whole class. This helps ensure all students know appropriate roles they make take on and have a basic knowledge of the concepts within the pretend and learn center. To introduce a center you might consider: Statues: Naming different roles(cook, Mom, Farmer) one might take on in the center and asking students to make frozen statues (take on silent and still poses) that show something someone in that role might do (Example: A chef might stir, decorate a cake, lick a spoon) name out some of the things you see statues doing Idea and Movement: Ask students what kinds of things do do? after a child answers the teacher asks them to show with their body what that action would look like. Once the child shows their movement for the action the teacher repeats the movement then the whole class tries the movement. Get 3-5 responses per role. Artifact: Bring out a few objects (or use pictures) from your new pretend and learn center. Invite students to tell you what see when they look at the object (color, size, shape, etc.), share what they know about the object (what its name is) and finally what it might be used for or do. Other resources can be found at Center Participation Students can sort, label and display rocks. Students can scrub/clean rocks. Students can paint rocks. Students can create pet rocks. Students can buy and sell rocks. Sift soil to find the tiny rocks inside. Center Organization Post any posters, and or pictures of different types of rocks. Baskets, bins or trays for sorting rocks. Tubs or water table for washing/scrubbing rocks. Create a butcher paper cave for students to enter. (see example below) A tub of soil and a sieve to sift the soil to find rocks and pebbles. Content Area Supported Social Studies- Landforms Vocabulary English and Spanish vocabulary cards are located below Materials Rocks or varying sizes, colors and texture Water table or dish pan of water Brushes for cleaning rocks Writing materials
