Developing continental maps of African animal trypanosomosis: the example of Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda 32 nd Meeting of the International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control (ISCTRC) 8-12 September 2013, Khartoum, Sudan Giuliano Cecchi 1, Massimo Paone 2, Udo Feldmann 3, Marc J. B. Vreysen 3, Raffaele C. Mattioli 2 1 FAO, Sub-regional Office for Eastern Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 2 FAO, Animal Production and Health Division, Rome, Italy. 3 Joint FAO/IAEA Programme, Vienna, Austria.
Developing continental maps of AAT Rationale AAT is widespread within the tsetse-infested belt of sub-saharan Africa a wealth of information on the epidemiology of AAT is collected however, accessibility of AAT data is limited, and synthetic and harmonized information on the levels of endemicity at the national, regional and continental scales is lacking
The Atlas of tsetse and AAT Background The Atlas of tsetse and African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) is an initiative of FAO, jointly implemented with IAEA, in the framework of the Programme against African Trypanosomosis (PAAT) General objective to assist endemic countries in better managing, analyzing and sharing entomological and parasitological data, for improved, evidence-based decision making Specific objective to assemble contemporary, georeferenced data on the occurrence of Glossina species and AAT at the continental level
Atlas of tsetse and AAT General structure, products and outputs
Input data: sources 1 st Phase Peer-reviewed scientific publications 2 nd Phase technical publications, conferences proceedings, reports, MSc - PhD thesis, etc. field datasets spreadsheets databases personal communications etc...
Peer-review publications Search strategy Sources PAAT Tsetse and Trypanosomosis Information Bulletin ( PubMed ( CabDirect ( etc... Period of data collection: 1990 onwards
The database Epidemiological data table Survey_ID (unique numeric identifier) Survey period (Start month and year, End month and year) Animal species Sample size (number of animals tested) Animal breed, age range and sex Husbandry system Number, prevalence and absence/presence of infections T. vivax T. congolense (+ subgroups or types) T. brucei (+ subspecies), T. simiae T. suis mixed-infections Diagnostic method E.g. Buffy coat technique, PCR, Ab-ELISA, etc... PCV Ongoing T&T interventions Location_ID Source_ID
The database Geographical data table Location_ID unique identifier Country Location name Geographic coordinates (Latitude - Longitude) Administrative units Area type 10 km 2 > 10 and 25 km 2, > 25 and 100 km 2 > 100 and 500 km 2 > 500 and 1,000 km 2 > 1,000 and 10,000 km 2 Notes Source_ID
Preliminary results Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda 131 relevant publications identified and processed 520 distinct geographic locations mapped

Host: cattle Diagnostic methods: HCT and BCT Ab-ELISA PCR Prevalence maps Minimum sample size: 30 animals. Reporting period:
Follow-up Extend the methodology for mapping AAT to all endemic countries Refine and test the methodology for mapping tsetse Explore options develop distributional models of tsetse and AAT, based on the data collected for the Atlas Transfer the methodology to interested partners AU-PATTEC Coordination Unit Affected countries
National-level Atlases: Sudan Following presentation The Spatial distribution of bovine trypanosomosis in tsetse-infested areas of Sudan: past & present Illustrates how the methodology developed by FAO can be applied at the national level
Conclusions Developing contemporary global maps of AAT will require sustained efforts Only the full engagement of and collaboration with PATTEC, National Animal Health Authorities and Research Institutes and will enable to meet the main goal of the initiative: to assist endemic countries in developing evidence for an informed and effective decision making
Thanks for your attention
