Application for Horizon Research and Innovation Framework Programme ANTHUSIA Anthropology of Human Security in Africa (48 months)
2 Presentation of IARA (Institute for Anthropological Research in Africa) anthropological research in and on Africa (as a geographic political, economic, historical, social and an imaginary space, on its past, present and future) Focus on the everyday lives of the different actors on the continent, and in its diasporas Research is committed to actor-oriented, long-term participatory and sited research ('fieldwork '), qualitative research methods Aim is to shed light on the social, economic, political and ecological challenges facing Africa today
Research focuses on 3 axes: 1.Urbanity 2.Ecology 3.Materiality 3
Research Funding 1. Urbanity: Planning Poverty. Urban Planning and Everyday Life in 3 Cities in the Global South (Kenya, Ghana, Congo) (OT + FWO projects ) (Kinshasa, Accra, Nairobi) Promotor: F. De Boeck Co-Promotors: Ann Cassiman, Steven Van Wolputte 2. Resulted in participation in Anthropology and Human Security in Africa (ANTHUSIA), a European Joint Doctorate (EJD) under the European Commission s Innovative Training Networks (ITN) in the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme ( ), coordinated by Aarhus U. 4
ANTHUSIA Other partners of the consortium: University of Aarhus (coordinating) University of Edinburgh University of Oslo 5
6 THEME of the proposal Overall theme: anthropology and human security (proposed by the lead coordinator) The ANTHUSIA EJD offers an innovative, interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral approach to the constellation of crises and possibilities faced by contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa and critical to the wider world. Combining anthropological, human security and African studies approaches, from four leading universities in Europe, to analyse how potentials as well as problems are intimately intertwined across sectors, will provide Early Stage Researcher (ESRs) with a highly applicable top quality education. A human security perspective shifts the focus from the security of nation states to the safety and wellbeing of humans in their everyday lives.
7 By exploring different topic areas from a human security perspective, the research aims at providing vital insights into development issues, such as expanding young populations, accelerated urbanisation, unequally distributed growth, recurring borderland conflicts, persistent and emergent health problems, refugee and displacement challenges, labour and welfare problems, and changing gender and generational dynamics.
8 ESR projects focus on a comprehensive understanding of human safety that includes health, social networks, infrastructure, economic/livelihood security, environmental/climate change, land and resource issues, and political security. Bringing together projects anchored in different sectors and analysing them innovatively though various scholarly lenses will enhance the understanding of inter-linkages between human security domains. To enhance the policy impact of the research findings ANTHUSIA ESRs will spend significant time as interns with non-academic partner organisations, in administration, NGOs and industry, to obtain hands-on work experience and general transferable skills, and to practice stakeholder engagement early on. To enhance effective dissemination and policy impact, beyond conventional modes of research-to-policy channels, they will be trained to communicate research findings in innovative ways through visual means. A central partner organisation to integrate these efforts is The British Institute of East Africa (BIEA) located in Nairobi, Kenya, which will host summer schools, workshops and the final conference.
9 As a beneficiary in the ANTHUSIA project IARA research will focus on (3 PhDs): 1. Urban poverty in South Africa (promotor: De Boeck) 2. Urban youth in Namibia (Promotor: Van Wolputte) 3. Mental health and psychiatric care in urban Burkina Faso (Promotor: Cassiman).
10 Joint proposal first introduced in The third version (2016) was successful
