2 National Minerals Information Center o Mission o o Goal o To collect, analyze, and disseminate information on the domestic and international supply of and demand for minerals and materials essential to the U.S. economy and national security. Provide decision makers with the information required to ensure that the U.S. has an adequate supply of minerals and materials to meet it s needs, at an acceptable cost with regard to environmental, energy, and economic factors.

6 Customers: Department of Defense (DoD) o Defense Logistics Agency - Strategic Materials (DLA-SM) is the leading U.S. agency for the analysis, planning, procurement and management of materials critical to national security. The agency possesses a unique combination of technical expertise, global/geopolitical material supply analysis, and management & tracking of a broad range of existing & future critical materials. o DLA-SM is tasked with ensuring defense, industry, and essential civilian material needs are met during national emergencies. o The Strategic and Critical Materials Stockpiling Act requires DLA-SM to prepare a Biennial Report on Stockpile Requirements. o Projected supply and demand of materials and scenario assumptions. o USGS NMIC data and analysis are essential to the development of the Biennial Report. o NMIC commodity and country specialists work directly with DLA-SM to help them deliver on their objectives.
