2 Climate change impacts in the Pacific Impacts of sea level rise - storm surges, coastal erosion, resettlement Increased incidence of extreme events such as floods, droughts and cyclones which threaten freshwater supply. Reefs and Marine Resources will be adversely affected. Increased in ocean temperatures, coral bleaching, progressive acidification of oceans. Agriculture will be affected. Coastal plains, where most of our agriculture is based, can be salinised due to sea-level rise and become less productive. Increased natural disasters will damage crops and warmer, wetter climate will favour the breeding of pests. Disease prevalence will increase as warmer, wetter conditions favour the breeding of disease carrying insects such as mosquitoes (spreading dengue and malaria) and aquatic pathogens such as giardia.

22 The challenge The development of an integrated interagency Pacific climate change portal that provides access to all relevant resources in a format that meets the varied information needs of a wide range of users

24 Why a portal? there is a clear need for the Pacific to gain access to existing information and data and to ensure new information and data is made available to decision makers as soon as practicable. Yet, currently there is no region-wide agreed mechanism for collating and disseminating climate-related information in the Pacific. Improve access to critical climate related information policy, science, adaptation, mitigation, data, reports, project developments, funding improved communication and collaboration in both the development and implementation of climate change adaption initiatives at the international, regional and national level facilitate enhanced communication and provide a common forum for collaboration, maximising synergies and reducing duplication between stakeholders.

25 Terms of reference for the scoping study for the portal Develop an inventory of existing websites (including portals and portlets) with information relating to climate change in the Pacific and an analysis of interoperability and compatibility, and identification of institutions and organisations with relevant datasets, products and services. Carry out an assessment of those other websites, portals and portlets, including portals being proposed or that are under development, to gather lessons learned and to make recommendations for the most appropriate options for a Pacific Climate Change Portal. Develop a proposal for investigation and identification of possible partnerships with other international portal projects of a similar nature. Based on identified user groups and their needs for climate change relevant information, formulate a set of high-level objectives that define the operational structure of the portal. Develop a series of feasible conceptual design options for the portal to meet these identified objectives.
