1 Background A Baltic Sea Bathymetry Database Concept and Hans Öiås Swedish Maritime Administration Hydrographic Office A national directive: The Swedish Maritime Administration shall, in cooperation with other authorities concerned and within the framework of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), promote increased standardisation of various types of sea data and develop an action plan on how to create a general harmonised bathymetry model for the Baltic Sea. Succesfully included, with emphasis towards navigation, in a TEN-T Motorways of the Sea project. 2 IHO, International Hydrographic Organization Bathymetry and Inspire Global organization, 80+ member states Promotes primarily standards and products for the safety of navigation Regional Hydrographic Commissions for regional cooperation The Baltic Sea Hydrographic Commission has 8+1 member states Bathymetry = Depth, distance surface to bottom. Included in Inspire annex II Elevation Maritime Administrations, Hydrographic Offices are also typically involved in : Annex 1 Administrative areas Annex 1 Transport Networks 3 4 1

2 EU TEN-T Project Runs Four (4) work packages Dynamic and Proactive route planning Electronic verification of officers certificates Ensuring Quality of Hydrographic Data on Shipping Routes and Areas Global Sharing of Maritime Information Hydrographic Surveys in the project Baltic Sea harmonised bathymetric model Specification of common harmonized datasets including a common application schema (information model) for bathymetry Develop proposals concerning storage, maintenance, exchange and distribution of bathymetric data. 5 Obstacles for harmonisation Early conclusions National legislation varies regarding availability especially defense reasons (Secrecy Acts) The demand for bathymetry data is evident and varies a lot with regard to resolution and quality National business models varies, cost or no cost for bathymetry data Possible solution Find a common denominator for a harmonised data set where terms and licensing are agreed. Nations provide high resolution bathymetry data through national channels (portals, Inspire) Availability is considered problematic INSPIRE helps as a driving force A future organisation for a sustainable initiative will be proposed Foundation for a Baltic Sea SDI.??
