3 Polar bear 2009 Period: March - April 2009 Area: Svalbard, using RV Lance and helicopter 1. Capture-recapture program, most in North from 25March-12April, then in East and South 13April-30April a) Field camp during the last two weeks of April at Frankenhalvøya (Barentsøya) 2. Den study, den mapping a) from air, in parallel with capturerecapture program b) from ground, Kongsøya, 25March-30April, 2-3 persons on ski, east part of the island
4 Period: March August 2009 Svalbard reindeer 2009 Area: Adventdalen, Brøggerhalvøya, Sarsøyra (field camp light cabin), Kaffiøyra, using snowmobiles and boats 1. Monitoring of Svalbard reindeer in Kongsfjorden area (Brøggerhalvøya, Sarsøyra, Kaffiøyra, including measurements of the snow pack and ground-ice. 2 persons (25 March - 20 April). 2. Studies of plant-reindeer interactions in Kongsfjorden area. 2 persons (25 June - 20 August). 3. Structural counts of Svalbard reindeer in Kongsfjorden area, including monitoring reproduction and first year survival. 2 persons (12 July - 20 July). 4. Monitoring of Svalbard reindeer in Adventdalen and nearby valleys. 6 persons (1 July - 10 July).
5 Svalbard ptarmigan 2009 Period: March - May 2009 Area: Adventdalen Sassendalen, using snomobiles 1. Monitoring of Svalbard rock ptarmigan in Adventdalen-Sassen area, 4-8 persons (1-20 April). 2. Satellite telemetry Svalbard rock ptarmigan, 3-4 persons (1-9 May)
6 Arctic fox 2009 Period: March July 2009 Area: Adventdalen, Sassendalen, Ny- Ålesund, using snowmobiles and boats 1. Monitoring of arctic foxes in Adventdalen-Sassen area, 2 persons (2-8 March). 2. Arctic fox carcass collection, demographic trapping data, 1 person (ca April). 3. Arctic fox den monitoring in Kongsfjorden area (Brøggerhalvøya, Ossian Sars, Blomstrand, Forlandet, Krossfjorden), 2 persons (29 June-6 July). 4. Arctic fox den monitoring in Adventdalen and Sassen area, 2 persons (29 June-20 July).
7 Sibling vole 2009 Period: August 2009 Area: Grumant Up to 4 persons in the field at the same time Use of boat during fieldwork
8 Sea birds Period: February September Area: Svalbard (incl Bjørnøya) - Up to 20 people in the field at the same time - Use of snowmobiles, rubberboats, sailboat and Lance during fieldwork
9 Sea birds cont. Monitoring of wintering seabirds along the western coast of Spitsbergen. 2 persons. A SEAPOP-sub-programme (February/March) Seabird monitoring on Bjørnøya. 10 persons. SEAPOP/MOSJ Two new sub-programs: Migration routs, wintering areas and winter ecology in Common and Brünnich's guillemot (financed by the Total foundation) Contaminants and effects in the great skua (NFR) (June-August) Monitoring little auk, Brünnich's guillemots, kittiwakes, glaucous gulls in Isfjorden. The personnel will also retrieve and refit geolocator tags from Brünnich's guillemots (TOTAL project). 2-4 people (15/6-30/7). Seabird colony counts and mapping on the east coast of Spitsbergen. 5 people on board Arctica (1-30/7). Monitoring kittiwakes, Brünnich's guillemots in Kongsfjorden area. The personnel will also retrieve and refit geolocator tags from Brünnich's guillemots (TOTAL project). 2 people (15/6-30/7 ) Mapping little auk foraging trips and foraging behavior. Kongsfjorden and Isfjorden. 2 people + use of Lance further north (1-30/7) Contaminants in kittiwakes, little auk, common eider. Isfjorden Kongsfjorden Magdalenefjorden Liefdefjorden - Rijpfjorden - Ice edge. COPOL/Birdhealth/ALKEKONGE (20/6-30/8)
10 Ivory gull Period: April August Area: Svalbard, using helicopter and boats - Field camp at Svenskøya from June 25th to August 1st Up to 3 persons in the field at the same time 1. Survey of breeding colonies of IVGU 2. Monitoring of breeding IVGU in Svalbard by use of digital cameras (SEAPOP/MOSJ) 3. Contaminant studies (Svenskøya, Kong Karls Land) 4. Habitat use and migration routes by use of sat. telemetry (Svenskøya, Kong Karls Land)
11 - Period: April June 2009 Ringed seal Area: Wahlenbergfjorden, Kongsfjorden, using helicopter, snowmobiles and boats 1. Ringed seal breeding habitat studies in Kongsfjorden. 4 persons
12 Period: June September 2009 Area: Prins Karls Forland, using small boats Harbour seal Harbour seal studies, deployment of sat. tags on pups. 4 persons (29 June 12 July). 2. Harbour seal studies, deployment of sat. tags (CTD tags) on adults. 5 persons (1-20 September).
13 Greenland shark 2009 Period: June 2009 Area: West-Spitsbergen using Lance 1. Greenland shark studies persons (14 28 June).
14 Geology 2009 Period: July August 2009 Area: Isfjorden and Nordaustlandet, using helicopter and boats. 1. Geological mapping in northeastern part of Nordaustlandet. 3 persons (28 July - 17 August). 2. Geological investigations of Perm and Trias strata in Ekmanfjorden, southern Dickson Land and Sassendalen. 8 persons (20 July - 17 August).
15 Period: March September Area: Lomonossovfonna, Austfonna, Ny-Ålesund area, using helicopter and snowmobiles 1. Massbalance/icecores. Up to 10 people in the field at the same time. Glaciers 2009
16 Sea ice 2009 Period: April September 2009 Area: Storfjorden, Kongsfjorden and Framstredet, Using Lance and snowmobiles. Up to 12 people in the field/cruise at the same time 1. Work on sea ice (fast ice) in western Storfjorden related to sea ice energy and mass balance and long-term fast ice monitoring. EU project, DAMOCLES. 3-4 persons (Mid April 2009, Approx 1 week). 2. Work on sea ice (fast ice) and snow on land in Kongsfjorden/Ny-Ålesund. Focus themes: physical snow and ice properties, surface energy balance, surface albedo, and continuation of long-term fast ice monitoring. Work involves also AUV flights. 5+ persons (End of April/early May 2009, Approx. 2 weeks).
17 Monitoring of ground vegetation on Svalbard in relation to climatic changes and traffic wear Period: The overall monitoring will start presumably July 2009 with a frequency specially adapted to the monitoring methodology overall every 5. year. Area: Svalbard 1. A new TOV station (terrestrisk naturovervåkning) in Endalen 2. Special monitoring of selected vascular plants in Spitsbergen 3. Surveillance and satellite mapping of phenology indicators around Svalbard archipelago 4. Broad mapping of vulnerability for wear around the archipelago and intensive monitoring of traffic wear first of all on the west coast of Spitsbergen
18 Svalbard aerial mapping Period: July August 2009 Area: Svalbard Season 2 of aerial mapping Small plane with aerial mapping equipment (cameras) will be used during fieldwork
