3 The Arctic SDI - the vision - An Arctic SDI based on sustainable co-operation between mandated national mapping organisations which will provide for access to spatially related reliable information over the Arctic to facilitate monitoring and decision making 2

4 Background A pan-arctic cooperative initiative based on input and reference spatial datasets for National Mapping Organizations of all eight Arctic Countries. The Arctic SDI was endorsed by the Arctic Council at the SAO meeting in Copenhagen in

5 Background SAO meeting in March 2012 Recognized the importance of the Arctic SDI and its contribution to improving data integration, sharing and analysis across the Arctic. Encouraged CAFF and the Arctic SDI SC to look into how to formalize this cooperation through the Arctic Council, and to submit a proposal to the next SAO meeting to insure a sustainable framework for the development of this project. 4

6 The Response Task 1. Describing resources needed for management of the Arctic SDI in terms of competence, manpower, hardware, software etc. Task 2. Establishing an Administrative WG (AWG) to deal with governance and to consider the most efficient/suitable means of organizing and managing the Arctic SDI in the future. Task 3. Increased commitment by signing of a MOU 5

7 Next Steps To achieve this sustainable framework the following texts are suggested for inclusion in the Kiruna Declaration and/or SAO report to ministers: Endorsement of Arctic SDI as a key component of a framework, which will in the future allow for the efficient integration, access to and coordination of data on the Arctic Urge the Arctic Council countries to insure a financial framework in place to insure a sustainable Arctic SDI Recognition of the significance of the MoU between the National Mapping Organizations as a key step in the successful implementation of the Arctic SDI. 6

8 Next Steps Reporting at the next SAO meeting on the progress of work within the AWG and to outline what the Arctic Council can do to facilitate the sustainability for the Arctic SDI. 7
