A spatial view on the culture heritage domain Jacob Mendt, Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB)
$ whoami Jacob Mendt Background: Geography / Geoinformatics Employee in the IT department of the SLUB and parttime consultant/freelancer github.org/jacmendt Mail: Jacob.Mendt@
What makes a library so Spatial? Source:
What makes a library so Spatial? Maps, Maps & Maps Panoramic views Location aware metadata books, diaries, pictures, newspaper Location aware data from Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
Historic maps in the SLUB analogous historic maps and panoramic views Focus: History of the Federal State of Saxony Over of them are digital available The portal Kartenforum allows user to search the maps by thematic criteria and display them in as zoomify tiles in a browser
Virtual Map Forum 2.0 Search and Display
Virtual Map Forum 2.0 Crowdsourced Georeferencering
Virtual Map Forum 2.0 Upshot Georeferencing georeferenced plane survey sheets (with crowdsourcing and automatic image recognition) Most georeferenced maps have a coordinate precision between 5 to 30 m. maps have less then 100 m coordinate precision frequency Only 1% of the georeferenced Reasons are damaged images or in the case of crowdsourcing evil users class limits
Virtual Map Forum 2.0
Goobi-Presentation
Virtual Map Forum 2.0 Outlook Portal as TYPO3 extension Stronger modularization Support of further map types through the crowdsourcing georeferencing tool Publishing of new map collections through the portal: Plane survey sheets with scale 1: Geological maps
Metadata, Metadata, Metadata
D:SWARM Graphical web based ETL modelling tool that serves to: import data from heterogeneous sources with different formats map input to output schemata and design transformation workflows load transformed data into property graph database With additional functionalities: Exporting of data models as RDF Sharing mappings and transformation workflows Publication under Open Source licence (Apache 2):
D:SWARM
D:SWARM
D:SWARM A spatial view Is missing spatial functionalities yet. Could be used to allow the mapping of location names / tags again Gazetteer Historic Gazetteer Could be further extended with transformation capabilities for spatial data It s up to the Use Case
Digital preservation Preservability: several thousands of years Preservability: around 6 years
Digital preservation Ensures that digital information of continuing value remains accessible and usable (50 years +) Consideration of future usage scenarios Digital preservation is not a Backup Two main tasks: Bitstream preservation Preservation of the correctness of the digital information (Hardware & Software failures, attrition, hazards) Content preservation Preservation of the interpretability and usage of the digital information (File formats, Metadata) the hard part
Digital preservation Content preservation What should be preserved? Selection criteria und content evaluation Whichdata formats should be used for preservation? Open specification, no proprietary format Wide usage Low flexibility No security mechanism (encryption, copy protection, ) Self-description Robustness Low dependencies from specific software, hardware or other resources
Digital preservation A spatial view Demand in the spatial IT area for data management systems, which support digital preservation tasks Federal agency, private companies, culture heritage institutions, Do has spatial data specific requirements to digital preservation? What data formats should be used for digital preservation of spatial data (Raster / Vector / Metadata)? GeoTIFF could be a candidate for raster GML could be a candidate for vector, but quite complex
Conclusion There are multiple points of contacts between the culture heritage domain and the spatial IT Culture heritage institutions are starting to redefine there roles. This leads often to a new commitment to Openness. In practice that means: They try to open their data silos They try to get involved with knowledge communities and support them Culture heritage institutions need time to react and change, but when they change they bring the benefit of an longterm perspective with them.
Thank you very much, questions? Quelle: nk-you-for-yourattentionpresentation.asp
