1 March 20th, 2014 VIA College of Lake County West Washington Street Grayslake, Illinois Re: College of Lake County Master Plan Projects Architect s Project Number: Southlake Chemistry Lab Suite Meeting #6 Minutes Summary of the Southlake Chemistry Lab Suite Meeting #6 Minutes held at 10:00 am on March 14th, 014 at College of Lake County0Southlake Campus. These notes record our understanding of items discussed and decisions made at this meeting. Please notify us within seven (7) calendar days of any necessary additions or corrections. PERSONS IN ATTENDENCE David Aggazi, Vice President for Administrative Affairs Viki Cvitkovic, Dean, Southlake Campus Nick Terlap, Facilities Lead Maintenance Greg Evans, Director of Facilities Ahmad Audi, Nanotechnology Department Chair & Professor of Chemistry Mary Urban, Professor of Chemistry Steve Holman, Dean, Grayslake Campus Dorothy McCarty Jeff Sronkoski, Principal Burcin Moehring, Director of Science and Technology Katie LaCourt, Design Associate College of Lake County (CLC) College of Lake County (CLC) College of Lake County (CLC) College of Lake County (CLC) College of Lake County (CLC) College of Lake County (CLC) College of Lake County (CLC) Cotter Consulting Legat Architects (Legat) Legat Architects (Legat) Legat Architects (Legat) ITEMS DISCUSSED 1. Dorothy McCarty indicated that the cost estimate for the renovation of the existing 3 rd floor conference spaces into the new Chemistry Lab Suite and an addition to the atrium (to compensate for the existing conference spaces) is more than the project budget. It was agreed that more design options acceptable for the users will be studied and a cost estimate will be obtained. Therefore, the project schedule will need to be adjusted. Even though the design will change, it was agreed that the lab layout options will be discussed with the users to obtain general feedback which can be applied to the future options. 2. Burcin Moehring presented 5 lab renovation options. a. Option 1: Teaching Lab (1,341 sq ft) with Prep lab/instrument Lab (364 sq ft) & Storage/Mini0stock Room (341 sq ft) 0 fixed ovular island benches. b. Option 2: Teaching Lab (1,341 sq ft) with Prep lab/instrument Lab (364 sq ft) & Storage/Mini0stock Room (341 sq ft) 0 fixed teardrop island benches and movable tables in the center. c. Option 3: Teaching Lab (1,341 sq ft) with Prep lab/instrument Lab (364 sq ft) & Storage/Mini0stock Room (341 sq ft) 0 fixed octagonal island benches and movable tables in the center. d. Option 4: Teaching Lab/Instrument Lab (1,829 sq ft) with Prep lab/instrument Lab (152 sq ft) & Storage/Mini0stock Room (76 sq ft) 0 fixed octagonal island benches and movable tables in the center. This design option was based on Dr. Audi s proposed layout.
2 College of Lake County Southlake Chemistry Lab Suite Meeting March 20, 2014 Page 2 of 3 e. Option 5: Teaching Lab/Instrument Lab (1,829 sq ft) with Prep lab/instrument Lab (152 sq ft) & Storage/Mini0stock Room (76 sq ft) 0 fixed teardrop island benches and movable tables in the center. This design option was based on Dr. Audi s proposed layout.. 3. Dr. Audi indicated that he finds Options 4 & 5 desirable. He stated that since these options include renovation of the 3 rd floor and the spaces are close to the 2 nd floor Storage and Prep Lab, the small Mini0 stockroom and Prep Labs are adequate. 4. Dr. Audi prefers to have movable benches, with small sink stations that are fixed. This allows the room to have some flexibility. He prefers that there is no wall between the instrument lab and the teaching lab, and merely the movable lab tables can be located in between these rooms. a. He requested one sink to be provided per 2 benches. b. 4 benches in the center would be fixed. The octagonal shape is preferred over the teardrop shape. c. Each of the main four benches need gas, power and a large sink. d. Movable lab tables in the teaching lab are preferred. e. No fume hood is required in the Prep Lab. Users suggested having a dual sided fume hood which can be shared with the Teaching Lab. 5. It was agreed that these concepts will be applied to the previous option where the Chemistry Teaching Lab will be on the Ground Floor. It was discussed that this teaching lab addition might connect to R102 or connect to the R Building. The Legat team will study options. 6. The addition should be compact, barely touching the existing. 7. Dr. Audi stated that since the Chemistry Teaching Lab will be on the Ground Floor and away from the existing Storage and Prep Labs on the Second Floor, he requested to have much larger Storage/Stockroom and Prep Lab. 8. It was agreed that Legat team will incorporate the desirable lab design components into Options where the addition is on the Ground Floor and submit to get cost estimates for each option to be reviewed by the CLC team. 9. Burcin Moehring stated that one option might be to translate the desirable lab layout design into the addition connecting to the atrium and leaving the Nano Lab and the Nano Classroom where they are. Light renovation of the Nano Lab as an alternate might be an option as proposed by David Agazzi in the previous meeting. 10. The users suggested an option where the Nano Lab might be integrated in the Chemistry Teaching Lab and where the Chemistry and Nano Instrumentation might be combined. In this option, the existing Nano Lab will be renovated into the Prep Lab and Storage to support the teaching lab. 11. Katie LaCourt briefly presented the addition to the atrium. It was agreed that this option is no longer valid since it is more than the budget.
3 College of Lake County Southlake Chemistry Lab Suite Meeting March 20, 2014 Page 3 of It was agreed that Legat team will study more options at the Ground Floor and get a cost estimate for each option. Once the project scope is aligned with the project budget, the design options will be reviewed with the users on April 4th. 13. The next meeting will take place at 10:00 am, on April 4, Sincerely, Legat Architects, Inc.
