2 Multi-purpose Wet Chemical Analysis ADI 2040 The Metrohm Applikon ADI 2040 Process Analyzer is a multipurpose wet chemical analyzer, that has been designed to offer flexibility and withstand the harshest environments. It makes use of proven analytical techniques, like titration, colorimetry and dynamic standard addition with ion selective electrodes. Hardware Its rugged hardware and the possibility to do automatic calibration & cleaning, results in a 99.5% up-time. Its versatility allows the incorporation of multiple analyses and multiple sample streams in one Analyzer, resulting in low cost per analysis/sample. The controller makes it possible to run up to 3 independent analyses simultaneously. Reagent usage is minimized by using low volume measuring cells. The ADI 2040 has a modular wet part with 20 uniform positions for a variety of modules and accessories. With the flexibility of modular design, the ADI 2040 can be adapted to almost any application. In the electronic part, the same modular concept is used, so that the I/O cards for control of the wet part and external communication (maximum 20) can be configured to the needs of the user. 3 Software The software allows independent runs for analyses, validation of the results, calibration of the system and cleaning of the sampling device, measuring cell and probes as well as control of external devices such as sample preconditioners. These various runs can be activated via the human interface, but also on time basis, by remote control or by if-statement. Using these options the Analyzer can for example run a calibration and/or cleaning cycle if a result lies outside certain pre-defined limits. Sample streams may be overriden or reactivated for analysis, by preprogramming, remote control or by if-statement. The Analyzer is able to verify the presence of sample and trigger an alarm when insufficient. It will keep a record of recent analyses, including titration curves and calibration data, to ease trouble shooting. Program display Real time titration curve Cabinet The cabinet of the ADI 2040 is constructed in such a way that the electronic compartment is sealed from the outside as well as from the wet part of the Analyzer. The rigid non-metal frame of the wet part is chemically resistant. The tempered glass doors of the wet part and human interface, offer easy access for servicing. The bottom contains a drain in the event of an emergency spill, and an optional liquid detector to trigger an alarm. Whether the doors are open or closed, the Analyzer enclosure complies to IP66 or NEMA 4. 4 Multi-purpose Wet Chemical Analysis Analysis methodologies The ADI 2040 can be loaded with several analysis packages by flash card and can thus be adapted to specific process analysis requirements. One or more of the following methods can be chosen: Titration, for many different applications Karl Fischer titration for water determination in liquid samples (oil, methanol, glycol, etc.) Colorimetry, predominantly used in water quality analysis & plating solutions Dynamic standard addition, for analyses which use ion sensitive electrodes Direct measurement, for measuring physical parameters such as ph, conductivity, temperature Data from auxiliary devices such as density, flow, turbidity, etc. may be imported through the analog input ports. Standard the ADI 2040 can handle 4 (different) electrodes or sensors; extension to 8 is possible. The possibility to choose a combination of methods means that in many cases just one single ADI 2040 will fulfill all analysis requirements. Applications The ADI 2040 Process Analyzers can handle a wide range of applications. Installations have been done in all kinds of industries including (petro)-chemical, mining, metal, galvanic, semiconductor, automotive, pulp & paper, textile, food & beverage and environmental analysis. Measurements can be done in samples streams like water, strong mixed acids baths, caustic scrubbers, pulp, active sludge, high solids, high temperature and/or pressure. The color development stabilization is automatically detected by making use of differential absorbance measurements. C O L O R I M E T R I C T I T R AT I O N Titration using the Metrohm Applikon LED dipping probe, available in many different wavelengths. Reliable water determination without recalibrating probes The Karl Fischer method is specific for water, is highly accurate, uses small sample sizes and requires only a short analysis time. It is the most specific methodology applied in the (petro) chemical industry. Dynamic Standard Addition This method has been developed specially to work with ion-sensitive electrodes. A small and precise amount of sample is taken, and buffer will be added. The Analyzer will then do a measurement and instruct the burette to add a calculated amount of standard solution to the mixture. Then it will repeat the measurement. From the difference it will calculate the original concentration. Thus the result for each analysis is validated, and unaffected by matrix effects of the sample. The addition of standard can be repeated to achieve a more accurate result.

7 Preconditioning Not only the chemical analysis, but also the sample preparation or preconditioning is of the utmost importance for the success of a process analyzer system. Furthermore, the Analyzer location is an important part of the installation. The sample needs to be as representative as possible, which means that the sampling point needs to be either as close to the Analyzer as possible or delivered by means of a fast loop when further away.
