Previously only implemented in our Professional IC instruments, this unique technology is now also available in our Compact IC series. Hence, features such as ipump, idetector and icolumn technology are standard in all 881 and 882 Compact IC instruments. These features guarantee superior analytical precision and eliminate virtually all operator errors. The Compact IC instruments too are operated by the MagIC Net TM chro matography software that controls all system components and monitors all relevant parameters. The highly versatile 881 Compact IC pro and the 882 Compact IC plus are aimed at users from all industries to meet their particular demands in routine analysis. These instruments ensure the accurate and reliable determination of anions, cations and polar substances in the parts per billion (ppb) to the percent (%) range. Moreover, the Compact IC range can be equipped with Inline Eluent Preparation providing automated, fast and error-free eluent preparation. Depending on the application, the 881 and 882 Compact IC 881 can also be retrofitted with gradients, different column dimensions, inline sample preparation techniques and the patented 800 Dosino, e.g. for Dosino regeneration of the chemical suppressor. Thus you are able to put together the right system to meet your particular requirements.

4 04 Applications Metrohm s Compact IC instruments have revolutionized ion chromatography applications. They now dominate in routine water and environmental analysis involving drinking, surface and ground water as well as effluents. However, the 881 Compact IC pro and 882 Compact IC plus were developed not just for these fields. Because of their high level of reliability they are being used more and more in the pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, the flexibility of the Compact IC instruments means they are widely deployed in the chemical and the food industry. Small and medium-sized analytical laboratories benefit from these instruments excellent priceperformance ratio. The high sensitivity of the Compact ICs allow for their operation in the energy sector, where we have recently seen a significant widening in the scope of application. In addition to the classical analyses in the petrochemical and power plant area, the Compact ICs are also being used increasingly in the analysis of alternative fuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel.

5 Automation and inline sample preparation The 881 and 882 Compact ICs can be fully automated, saving time and money. The 858 Professional Sample Pro cessor, the 863 Compact IC Autosampler (shown here), the 889 IC Sample Center, the 814 USB Sample Processor or the 815 Robotic USB Sample Processor XL can be used as sample changers. 05 MISP Metrohm Inline Sample Preparation coupled with the Compact ICs provide a unique sample preparation capability. Time-consuming manual steps can be fully automated with MISP ultrafiltration, dilution, dialysis or Metrohm Intelligent Partial-Loop Technique (MiPT). Do you wish to perform anion and cation determinations down to the lower ppb range, in parallel and independently of each other? 7 1 Housing One of the characteristic features of the Compact 881 and 882 ion chromatographs is their compact, space-saving design. Nonetheless, all components are clearly arranged and easy to access. The complete flow path is metal-free and preinstalled. The transparent door allows for visual monitoring even during analysis Eluent Flow The ipump is a central element of the Compact IC series. Its extremely low pulsation translates into low noise and maximum sensitivity of the system. In addition, all Compact IC instruments are equipped with purge valve, inline filter and pulsation absorber. Should your application require a gradient, Dosino gradient technology enables implementation of binary, ternary, quaternary and quinary gradients. 3 Separation icolumn, the analytical separation column, is the heart of every application. icolumn technology allows monitoring of this critical component. The system knows the optimal chromatographic conditions and prevents damage that can result from operator error. Complete traceability is guaranteed. Depending on the application, users can select columns with different basic materials, selectivities, capacities and dimensions. Apart from columns with an internal diameter of 4 mm, it is also possible to use 2 mm columns to reduce eluent consumption. 4 Temperature Applications can be optimized by varying the temperature of the separation column. The 881 Compact IC pro is equipped with a column heater that can heat the eluent and column up to 70 C. The thermally insulated column compartment of the 882 Compact IC plus provides reliable protection from external influences. 5 Suppression Sequential or chemical suppression thanks to the low background noise level, both facilitate very sensitive analyses. At < 0.2 ns/cm, both have the lowest noise level of all commercially available suppressors. This guarantees limits of detection in the 1 ppb range. The Metrohm suppressors are extremely robust, solvent- and pressure-resistant. That is why the chemical suppressors come with an unrivalled 10-year warranty. 6 Detection Conductivity is the most frequently used method of detection in IC. Apart from that, UV/VIS, electrochemical and mass-spectroscopic detection methods are used. The in telligent conductivity detector idetector transmits the analytical signal to the MagIC Net TM software directly and without any interference thanks to Digital Signal Pro cessing (DSP). The large measuring range of the idetector of μs/cm ensures correct and precise results from the trace to the percent range within one analysis.

8 MagIC Net TM 08 The MagIC Net TM chromatography software controls the instruments in the Compact IC family and processes the measuring data. All three software versions Multi, Professional and Compact excel by their clear symbols, well-organized layout and intuitive operation. But that s not all: MagIC Net TM also manages system control plus data management and offers many possibilities for making the analyses both easy and reliable.
