4 OVERVIEW OVIVO THM ANALYZER OVIVO has developed and launched a specific online process analyzer for trihalomethanes detection in potable, process and high purity water. Trihalomethanes (THMs) are typical disinfection by-products (DBPs) generated by chlorination of natural organic matter usually present in potable or surface water. THMs are known for being carcinogenic at certain concentrations and their removal through adequate processes is often required, not only for drinking water purposes but also for process or high purity water in certain industrial applications. This latest THM Analyzer with very low and accurate detection limits (< 1 ppb) for each of the four components of the THM family allows a well-controlled process and water quality monitoring at nearly real time behavior (several measurements per hour are possible). 5 PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The water sample passes through a multiplexer to a sample preparation unit, which operation is based on a Head- Space-Method. The sample is being heated for defined period of time at a set temperature (50 80 C; F), and the volatile substances from the sample enter the gas phase. When a balance between liquid and the gas phase is reached, the resulting overpressure forces the gas towards the sample loop of the Gas Chromatograph. The individual compounds are analyzed using separation columns and detectors (PID and TID) which generate signals displayed on chromatograms. The compounds concentration is then calculated by evaluation software through determination of respective peak height and integration of peak surface. DETECTORS Thermal Ionization Detector (TID) The TID has a high selectivity for volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (VOC). The central part of the detector is a special ceramic element with a platinum wire which is heated to a temperature of 300 C (572 F). At this temperature and with applied voltage, gas molecules (THMs) passing through the separation column are ionized on the ceramic element and the resulting ions can be accurately detected and quantified. Photo Ionization Detector (PID) The PID has a high selectivity for aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons depending on the type of lamp and the ionization potential (IP) of the substances to be analyzed. The PID can only detect substances which have an ionization potential less than or equal to the used lamp. Analyzer s PID Lamp: 10.6 ev (standard) or 11.7 ev (optional) The PID detector generates a monochromatic UV light. Molecules with smaller ionization potential than energy level of the UV radiation are ionized. The positively or negatively charged ions generate an electric current being actual detector s output.
