3 Software Functions User, sample, method, calibration, task, sequence and report definitions are developed through user friendly software screens. Laboratory manager can create hierarchy of users and distribution of authorities. All events are logged and permanently saved. Communication with computer is diagnosed. Diagnostics through software allows checking functionality of all the components of the whole system. Starting an analysis is as simple as putting the sample cups into the places and pushing the run button on the software screen. Operator observes detector signal graphically and numerically during the analysis. This helps in diagnosing if there is anything wrong. Unlimited number of repet runs is possible. RSD and average result of multiple runs on the same sample; slope and offset of calibration curve are shown on the display screen and appears in the report files. Refining and recalculation of results are possible by either selecting different calibration file for quantification or outlying as many results as desired. Even if changes are made in the results, original results still while the enhanced results need to be saved as a different file. Software allows smooth operation as well as flexible analysis cycle management. 4 Carbon and Nitrogen Containing Samples Soils and sediments contain a large variety of organic materials ranging from simple sugars and carbohydrates to the more complex proteins, fats, waxes, and organic acids. Important characteristics of the organic matter include their ability to form water-soluble and water insoluble complexes with metal ions and hydrous oxides; to interact with clay minerals and bind particles together; to sorb and desorb both naturally-occurring and anthropogenically introduced organic compounds; to absorb and release plant nutrients; and to hold water in the soil medium. Waste treatment processes end up with sludge, containing significant amount of carbon and nitrogen. It requires disposing, landfilling or further processing to get use of its energy and chemical content. Landfills are well isolated areas, where wastes are disposed. Ground water resources need to be protected from any contamination that would reach from the pollution sources including fertilizers, insecticides in agricultural use and eluates from the landfills. Any carbon containing material can be considered as a source of chemical input for production of organic compounds and also for energy generation. Achieving sustainable water quality is one of very essential concerns from many respects, including hygiene and environment. Carbon and nitrogen are two of the parameters indicating quality of water. Therefore identification of carbon and sometimes nitrogen content becomes essential in qualification in any one of the above mentioned topics. Compounds, both organic and inorganic nature, contribute to the carbon content. TRL-TN Module is an optional unit to be added to any TRL-TOC Analyzer configuration > Same sample in single run for combined TC + TN analysis > Built-in ozone generator for NO chemiluminescence TC-IC-TOC-TN Analysis Basic principle for quantification of total organic carbon relies on destruction of organic matter present in the sample matrix. The destruction of organic matter can be performed chemically or by heating at elevated temperatures. All carbon compounds in the sample are converted into CO 2 which is then measured directly and converted into total organic carbon or total carbon content, based on the presence of inorganic carbonates. Inorganic carbon compounds are mostly carbonates and easily decomposed by acidification to form CO 2. Nitrogen compounds of organic and inorganic nature are destructed at elevated temperatures into NO, which is then measured and calculated to express total nitrogen concentration in the sample. TRL-TOC-M Analyzer TRL-TOC-M analyzer is an instrument utilizing high temperature combustion technology for destruction of sample matrix for further measurement of CO 2 and NO to achieve TC/IC/TOC/TN concentrations in the sample. In TC and TOC measurements, solid samples are loaded into a quartz boat and then transferred into the combustion boat via a mechatronic device while liquid samples are filled in a vial and transferred into the furnace via a syringe pump. In case of running solid samples for TC analysis, the same device takes the boat out for replacement with the next sample without leaving any ash and remains in the furnace. Liquid sample is injected into the furnace; evaporated and burned for its analyte content. Complete combustion is achieved in two steps: First is at operator adjustable temperature high enough for destruction of the sample matrix. Second is the catalytic combustion step to further improve oxidation of any carbon containing compound into CO 2 while nitrogen containing compounds turn into NO. The whole combustion process takes place in the patented unique furnace compartment in the TRL- TOC-M Analyzer. When analyzing IC, both liquid and solid samples are placed in 40mL vials. Solid samples are acidified and sparged by air to collect the evolved CO 2 for further analysis. Liquid samples are sucked for further acidification and sparging in a sparger in the liquid handling unit. Low carbon/nitrogen containing samples are run under low mode while higher loadings are run under high mode. This is totally under operator s initiative. Ready-to-use methods for high mode and low mode are readily available in the software, so that the operator is free to choose either one of the ready-to-use methods or to develop/modify his/her own method. There are two simple parameters in a method: mode option (low or high) and combustion temperature. Task definition is required to instruct the analyzer to run the sample, with the method, by using the calibration file. Sequence definition is required to instruct the analyzer to run a tray full of samples, each being instructed under a task concept. The job of the operator is to initiate a sequence for a fully automated operation.

5 Basic Unit High temperature combustion furnaces, all electronics, detectors, valves and controls are in the basic module. Liquid Sample Autosampler This is used for automation of liquid sample injection. Accepts 63 samples on the tray. Sample in the vial is sucked and pumped to either the furnace or the sparger for TC or TOC analysis, respectively. Solid or non-flowing samples are analyzed for IC content in the sample vial, inserted into the liquid sample autosampler. Acid pumping for decomposition of carbonates is achieved by a peristaltic pump during the task cycle controlled by the software. Solid Sample Autosampler Module It has maximum 3 trays that could be easily mounted on top of the other. Samples in boats are placed in sample positions on the trays and carried to the basic module by the robotic autosampler, after initiation of a sequence run. Liquid handling Module This is for liquid sample injection into the basic unit. If not automated by an autosampler, then the operator holds a vial or a beaker for the module to suck the sample for further processing. If the sample is to be prepared for NPOC=TOC method, then it is transferred into a sparger for IC removal. If TC analysis is required, then the sample is injected directly into the furnace. The combustion boat is carried down to the loader car by means of the robotic arm. Liquid management is achieved by a syringe pumpmulti-port valve combination. The module stands on the basic unit.

6 Maintenance and adjustment requirements are gathered on a panel for ease of use. The panel is in front of the basic unit. The operator may adjust inlet air pressure, air flow rate and maintain halogen scrubber. The second easy-access door is available at the side of the basic unit for catalyst replacement.
