The Skalar Primacs SNC Analyzer provides fast, reliable, accurate and low level analysis of Total Carbon (TC) and Total Nitrogen (TN) in solid samples. Soil & Plant Soil testing is carried out to determine the level of nutrients in soil available for plants. Nitrogen is the most important element for plant development and carbon is essential for soil structure, energy for biological processes and provision of nutrients. With Skalar s Primacs SNC analyzer the determination of Total Nitrogen and Total Carbon can be performed both rapidly and easily. Sludges & Sediments In waste samples such as sludge, Nitrogen and Carbon analysis is important for pollution control. Ammonium, Nitrate, Nitrite and other Nitrogen compounds can serve as a nutrient source for troublesome water organisms. The Primacs SNC offers a fast and consistent determination of Nitrogen and Carbon levels simultaneously. High temperature catalytic combustion with Infrared Detection (NDIR) is used for the TC analysis and the determination of TN is based upon the well-proven DUMAS methodology using high temperature combustion and detection with Thermal Conductivity (TCD). Principle of operation The samples are weighed in a quartz crucible and placed in the autosampler. By a unique vertical bottom-to-top sample introduction system the samples are introduced in the high temperature combustion furnace. At 1100 C the Carbon is completely oxidized to CO 2 and Nitrogen is converted into NxOy in the presence of Oxygen. After the catalyst furnace, where the oxidation reaction takes place, the sample passes through a Peltier cooler to remove moisture formed by condensation. Then the sample gas is splitted and transferred, by the carrier gas Helium, to the reduction oven. In the reduction oven of 600 C NxOy is reduced, in the presence of a copper reductor, to N 2. Then first the CO 2 is measured by Non Dispersive Infra Red Detection (NDIR) for Total Carbon and subsequently the by-products, water and carbon dioxide are removed by an absorber. Secondly the N 2 gas is measured by Thermal Conductivity Detection (TCD) and to remove interferences a background correction is performed by measuring the He gas.

4 Data Acquisition and Instrument Control The Primacs SNC analyzer is controlled by Skalar s flexible SN-Access data acquisition software. The software is easy to set up and very user-friendly. Using pull-down menus for different actions it allows the operator to start analysis within a few minutes. During analysis the worklist can be modified, to enable the addition of priority samples, samples or sample positions can be edited or deleted. A dual display is available during the run to monitor both the Carbon and the Nitrogen channels in real-time simultaneously. In addition other information such as temperatures and detector signals, which are of major importance for reliable elemental analysis, are available in real-time. All analytical results and calibration curves can be viewed and edited in the results window. The results can easily be printed or exported to a LIMS system. 5 DUMAS versus Kjeldahl technique The Skalar Primacs SNC uses the automated DUMAS combustion technology for measurement of the total nitrogen/ protein concentration. In the Dumas method, a sample is burned in an oxygen rich atmosphere at high temperature and the resulting gases are analyzed. The Dumas combustion method has several advantages over the Kjeldahl technique in terms of speed and its environmental acceptability. In addition the Dumas method does not require any additional sample pretreatment such as digestion with toxic chemicals. The large sample size capacity of this instrument ensures reduced sample handling time and optimal automation. Detection is based on thermal conductivity (TCD). TCD detectors are able to process an extensive working range to cover nitrogen/protein levels from low parts per million to high percentage concentrations. The DUMAS combustion technology offers an accurate, rapid, safe, economical and environmentally friendly method for Nitrogen / Protein determination.

7 Other Skalar TOC and TN Analyzers Solid Samples Primacs SN TN / Protein Analyzer This analyzer is designed for Total Nitrogen (TN) and Protein analysis in a wide variety of sample types. Typical applications are Food & Animal feed, Grain & Seed, Soil & Plant, Industrial waste, sediments and sludge samples. Primacs ATC TC Analyzer This analyzer with integrated auto-sampler is designed for the analysis of Total Carbon and Total Organic Carbon in liquid and solid samples. Typical applications include soil, plant and fertilizer samples, waste incinerators, sludge and sediments, cement industry and mining industry. Primacs SLC TC / TIC / TOC Analyzer The Primacs SLC provides Carbon analysis on solid materials. Based on a dual furnace design, the system is capable of performing fast, reliable and separate determinations of TC and TIC without sample pretreatment. The TOC is automatically calculated (TOC = TC TIC). Primacs MCS TOC Analyzer The Primacs MCS TOC analyzer provides Total Organic Carbon analysis on solid materials. The analyzer is designed as an add-on module and operates in combination with the Formacs HT/LT TOC analyzer. It allows for the analysis of TC, IC and TOC. Liquid Samples Formacs HT TOC Analyzer The Formacs HT TOC analyzer provides a fast and reliable analysis of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in liquid samples using high temperature catalytic combustion. The unit is designed to measure TC, IC, TOC, NPOC, POC and DOC in water samples. The instrument is customized for the sample type and optimized from a range of different catalysts. Optionally the Formacs HT can be extended for TN and NO 3 + NO 2 analysis. Formacs TN TN Analyzer A Total Nitrogen detector is available as an addition to the Formacs HT analyzer for TN analysis using a chemiluminescence detector in combination with high temperature oxidation. Optionally the Formacs TN can be extended for NO 3 + NO 2 analysis using Skalar s unique NN reactor. Formacs LT TOC Analyzer The Formacs LT TOC analyzer uses the UV-promoted persulfate digestion procedure to determine the Total Organic Carbon in liquid samples. After digestion of the Organic Carbon and oxidation to Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ), the CO 2 is measured by Non Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) detection.
