1 Welcome to AP Chemistry! I am excited that you have decided to take such a challenging course and look forward to having you in my class this fall. This course is designed to be the equivalent of a 1 st two semesters of college chemistry. As a result, this class is intended for high school students who are willing to demonstrate very high levels of commitment, motivation, and academic maturity. In order to prepare for the rigors of this course, I have put together a relatively short Summer Assignment. You will need to 1. Complete the 12 Chemical Foundations Review Questions on a separate sheet of paper. This will be due on August 18, NO EXCEPTIONS! While the questions below cover basic content from Chemistry 1, you may need to review your old class notes and/or internet resources to aide in answering the following questions. All answers should be clear and concise for numerical answers: include units & sig figs. Also, please box your final answer. 2. While AP Chemistry is not all about memorization; having the elements (symbol & name) and the polyatomic ions (name, symbol, & charge) memorized is essential for success in learning the concepts covered in the course. On the first day of the school year, you will be given a quiz on these ions. You will be asked to: o write the names of these ions when given the formula and charge o write the formula and charge when given the names I have included several resources in this packet. First, there is the list of the ions that you must know on the first day. There is also a sheet with some suggestions for making the process of memorization easier. For instance, many of you will remember that most of the monatomic ions have charges that are directly related to their placement on the periodic table. There are naming patterns that greatly simplify the learning of the polyatomic ions as well. Also included is a copy of the periodic table used in AP Chemistry. Notice that this is not the table used in first year chemistry. The AP table is the same that the College Board allows you to use on the AP Chemistry test. Notice that it has the symbols of the elements but not the written names. You need to take that fact into consideration when studying for the afore mentioned quiz! I m sure there will be some students who will procrastinate and try to do all of this studying just before the start of school. Those students may even cram well enough to do well on the initial quiz. However, they will quickly forget the ions, and struggle every time that these formulas are used in lecture, homework, quizzes, tests and labs. All research on human memory shows us that frequent, short periods of study, spread over long periods of time will produce much greater retention than long periods of study of a short period of time. Use every modality possible as you try to learn these speak them, write them, visualize them. I suggest making flashcards and getting family/friends to quiz you. Take the lists with you on vacation, or do whatever it takes to get this information firmly planted in your head. I look forward to seeing you all at the beginning of the next school year. If you need to contact me during the summer, my info is below and I will get back to you as quickly as possible. Best of luck to you all, Mr. Bryan Piro bpiro@lexington1.net Edmodo code: 2rmtnj
2 Advanced Placement Chemistry Summer Assignment Due: August 18, 2014 NO Exceptions! Chemical Foundations: 1. What is meant by SI System for units and abbreviations? List the SI units for mass, length, time, temperature, and volume. 2. Convert 22 C to Kelvin. Convert 310 K to Celsius. 3. Perform the following conversions using Factor Label Method (FLM) [also known as the bridge method. ] Express your answers in scientific notation where appropriate. a x 10 4 cm to meters b g to milligrams c nm to micrometers d. 7.0 x 10 2 cm 3 to liters 4. You re planning on buying a new car based on which one gets the best gas mileage. Car #1 gets 37 miles per gallon in highway travel. Car #2 gets 27 kilometers per gallon in highway travel. Which car gets the better gas mileage? Show all work! Note: 1 km = miles 5. A children s pain relief elixir contains 80. mg of acetaminophen per 0.50 teaspoon. The dosage recommendation for a child who weighs between 24 and 35 pounds is 1.5 teaspoons. What is the range of acetaminophen dosages, expressed in mg acetaminophen/kg body weight, for children who weigh between 24 and 35 pounds? Note: 1 pound = grams 6. For each of the following experimental mass values: o state the number of significant figures o place the number in scientific notation o convert the value to micrograms ( g) expressing your final answer in scientific notation. a grams b grams c. 90. grams 7. A star is estimated to have a mass of 2.0 x kg. Assuming it to be a sphere of average radius 7.0 x 10 5 km, calculate the average density of the star in units of grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm 3 ). 8. A sample containing g of metal pellets is poured into a graduated cylinder initially containing 12.7 ml of water, causing the water level in the cylinder to rise to 21.6 ml. Calculate the density of the metal. 9. List and explain the 3 main parts of the atom. Include their charge, location, and relative mass. 10. What is an isotope? What varies in an isotope? 11. Determine whether the following atoms will gain or lose electrons to form an ion. Then state what ion will most likely form: Sodium, Barium, Aluminum, Strontium, Iodine, Sulfur 12. Be able to name and locate the following sections, groups/families on the periodic table: Metals Non-Metals Heavy Metals Alkali Metals Alkaline Earth Metals Noble Gases Transition Metals Diatomic Molecules Halogens Chalcogens Actinides Lanthanides Metalloids Radioactive Elements Inner Transition Metals
