6 1 NMNS SPEC. PUBL. No. 10 Type specimens of Taiwanese plants named by Dr. C.J. Maximowicz and housed at the Herbarium, Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia (LE) T.Y. Aleck Yang* Botanical Garden & TNM Herbarium, National Museum of Natural Science, Taichung 404, Taiwan, R.O.C. ABSTRACT The herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg (LE) is one of the three largest herbaria in the world. The LE is the principal herbarium where Dr. C.J. Maximowicz deposited his types. The present work has located 85 type specimens of 38 different species in Taiwan named by Dr. C.J. Maximowicz and provided digitized images for them. The checklist begins with Pteridophytes, followed by Angiosperm families that are arranged alphabetically. Key words: LE, Maximowicz, Taiwan, Type specimen, vascular plant. *Corresponding author.

8 3 NMNS SPEC. PUBL. No. 10 INTRODUCTION Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg (LE) is one of the three largest herbaria in the world. Based on the 8th ed. Index Herbariorum (Holmgren et al., 1990) there are almost 6,000,000 specimens at LE, and has a collection of type specimens of at least 1,300 species from China (including Taiwan), about 490 species from Japan and about 130 species from Korea (personal communication with Dr. A. Borodina-Grabovskaja). Among the important collectors, Dr. Carl Johann Maximowicz is one of the principal collectors and describers of Asian vascular plants. Maximowicz was one of the most important collectors at LE who studied Eastern Asian plants, including some vascular plants from Taiwan. Dr. C.J. Maximowicz ( ) was the Curator of the Chinese-Japanese Section at LE. He spent much time traveling around Russian Far East and NE China (including Amur, Ussuri and Sungari regions), also NW China, Mongolia and Japan (Stafleu and Cowan, 1981). In these areas, many new taxa were described and named by him, for example, in Japan at least 487 taxa (i.e. 367 species and 120 varieties) were named by Maximowicz, also including several specimens collected from Taiwan. The author visited LE for herbarium work between 23rd and 30th of June 2001, with financial support from The Foundation of National Museum of Natural Science. There was no power supply at the Institute Building (including LE herbarium and library) during that period but the author still could do some herbarium work during this white night period. The chosen type specimens were located in the Siberian and Far East and Central and East Asia sections of the Herbarium, and only type specimens of species in Taiwan named by Dr. Maximowicz were photographed. RESULTS These amounted to 85 type specimens of 38 different species belonging to 28 families and 34 genera. The checklist of species has been divided into Pteridophytes and Angiosperms arranged in Family order. The checklist follows: A. Pteridophytes 1. Lycopodiaceae 1.
