6 WEDDELL SEALS The Weddell Seals Passport features information about this amazing seal that dwells in the water and on the ice that surrounds Antarctica. Alex Eilers, Manger of the Education Department at the Pink Palace Museum, accompanied National Science Foundation research expeditions to McMurdo Station in 2012, 2014, and 2016 as a PolarTREC teacher. 7 EXTREME COLD WEATHER GEAR The Extreme Cold Weather Gear Passport features clothing issued by the United States Antarctica Program (USAP) to all persons travelling to Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth. Preparing for the extremely cold temperatures and high winds is an essential safety concern. Layering is very important. Examples of the three layers of gear worn during Antarctica expeditions are included in this Passport. When the Pink Palace Education Manager Alex Eilers traveled to Antarctica she wore these clothes like everyone else on the research expedition. These clothes are: Foundation Layer: Polar fleece balaclava Thin undershirt Thin underwear bottoms Glove liners Sock liners Mid Insulation Layer: Yazoo cap Long underwear shirt Thermal underwear bottom Gloves Wool tube socks Outer Shell Layer Snow goggles Red parka Wind pants Fur back mittens Thermal rubber boots This Passport supports curriculum standards related to TN Sci: ESS2: Earth s Systems and ESS3: Earth and Human Activity.
8 The Tree Cookies Passport takes a closer look at the parts of trees. Tree cookies are cross sections of a tree limb or trunk that reveal the many layers contained within trees. Tree cookies can tell us about the age of the tree, its health, and the climate conditions. The Tree Cookies Passport contains four activities with actual examples of tree cookies. These activities are: Anatomy Activity: Anatomy sheet (reproducible), one sample with colored pin mounts, one set of color coded definition cards Measurement Activity: Measurement chart (reproducible) plus five kits each containing three Tree Cookies: Red Oak, Red Pine and Walnut, a ruler and a magnifying glass.
