1 SCIENCE 9 ~~Mitosis Virtual Lab~~ NAME: DATE: CLASS: 90 In this virtual lab, you will further explore mitosis. In this first part of the virtual lab, you will be exploring how long each cell spends in each phase of the cell cycle. In the second part of this virtual lab, you will compare animal and plant cells. Go to : and click on the Onion Root Tips link on the left hand side. Part A: Before you begin ~~Read the information provided on this first page of the website~~ 1. The cell cycle is a cycle, meaning that it is continuously happening. Why is it necessary that the cell cycle happen continuously in both animal and plant cells? 2. Which phase of the cell cycle do you expect that each cell spends the most time in? Which phase of the cell cycle do you expect that each cell spends the least time in? Explain your reasoning. 3. In both parts of this virtual lab, you will be looking at onion root tips. Why do you think that scientists may find onions to be a good specimen to use to study cells?

2 Part B: Determine the amount of time cells spend in each part of the cell cycle. ~~Click next. Refresh your memory on the various stages of the cell cycle~~ 4. For each phase of the cell cycle provided on this second page of the website, provide a brief description of how a cell in a given stage physically appears. 3 5. In this part of the virtual lab, you will classify photos of cells taken from an onion root tip by their current phase within the cell cycle. a. As you identify classify each cell, keep a running tally of how you classified them in the chart provided below. You may need to zoom in within your internet browser to be able to see the photos of the onion well. Now that you have classified all of the cells provided, calculate the percentage of the total cells that were photographed in each phase. Enter this data in the table above. 6. After completing this part of the virtual lab, compare your results with the predictions you made when you began this lab. a. During which phase do cells spend most of their time? Why do you think this is? b. During which phase do cells spend the least of their time? Why do you think this is? 7. You have just finished observing 36 of the cells captured from one sample of one onion tip. a. Do you believe that these results would be the same for any sample of cells? Explain b. If you answered no to 6a., how much do you think the results would vary? Explain

Reflecting back on the first part of this virtual lab, identify a few cells that are dividing actively engaged in mitosis, and a few cells that are in interphase.
