United States of America. Biology 6th Ed Raven, Peter and George Johnson Biology 6 th Ed. The McGraw Hill Company,USA Scientists who Contributed to the Cell Theory Flash Cards Content Standard The learners demonstrate an understanding of: 1. Cell Theory 2. Cell Structure and Functions 3. Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic Cells 4. Cell Types 5. Cell Modifications 6. Cell Cycle 1 / 6

a. Mitosis b. Meiosis 7. Transport Mechanisms a. Simple Diffusion b. Facilitated Transport c. Active Transport d. Bulk/Vesicular Transport Performance Standard The learners shall be able to: 1. construct a 3D model of a plant/animal/ bacterial cell using recyclable materials 2. construct a cell membrane model from indigenous or recyclable materials Learning Competencies The learners distinguish prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells according to their distinguishing features Introduction/Review 5 mins 1. Simple recall on the description and characteristics/properties of a cell. 2. Show a diagram of atypical/typical cell. Motivation 10 mins Provide sample pictures of bacterium, plant and animal organism. Group the class and provide pictures of a bacterial cell, plant cell and animal cell. Instruct the learners to come up with their own observation on the differences of the pictures and let them identify similarities and differences. The group leader will present the group s observation and discuss in class. Instruction/Delivery 0 mins 1. Lecture-discussion using multimedia or powerpoint presentation on Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic cell 2 / 6

Source: 2. Presentation of a comic strip on the structural component of a prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell 3 / 6

Source: Kim, M, Kim N and Martinez R. An Adventure into Cells and Their Parts. Learner Paper Based Material. URL: 3. Show an interactive video about Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cell Practice 30 mins 1. Provide the learners with different types of organisms ( pictures of mushroom, amoeba, cactus, worms etc) and let them distinguish a prokaryote and a eukaryote. 2. Let the students construct a Venn diagram using the characteristics of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Sample Venn Diagram: = URL: 3. Make an edible model of a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell (gelatin with different types of fruits) 4 / 6

4. Make crossword puzzle or answer a crossword puzzle 5. Illustrate and characterize a prokaryote and eukaryote 6. Construct a comic strip: Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic cell Enrichment 30 mins Slide viewing of the structure of bacterium, plant cell and animal cell. Diagram of a cell of bacterium, plant and animal drawn/illustrated in a manila paper. Microscopic examination of sample prepared slides of cells (bacterium, plant and animal) Microscopic examination of sample cells (students will follow protocols in preparing cheek smear, plant cells from onion, pepper, potato etc.) Exercises: Observing Plant Cells A. Onion Cell (Allium cepa L.) 1. Prepare a wet mount slide of the thin epidermis of an onion scale following the instructions below: 1. remove the outer scale from an onion bulb 2. snap backwards the onion scale between the fingers 3. strip-off the thin epidermis with the use of forceps 4. place a small piece of epidermis in a drop of water on the slide. Flatten the epidermis on the slide using a needle. Cover with cover slip. Examine the onion wet mount slide under the low power and high power objectives of your microscope. Look for a group of cells. Although the cells appear to be rectangular, remember that they are three-dimensional, that is they have length, width and thickness. Observe for the structure of the onion cells. B. Red Pepper Cell (Capsicum frutescens) Observing Animal Cells A. Cheek Cells 1. Using a sharp razor blade, make a very thin section of the epidermis of a red sweet pepper. Mount this in water and examine under LPO. Note the arrangement of the highly irregularly shaped cells with many slides. 1. Obtain a toothpick, iodine solution, slide and cover slip. 2. Gently scraps the inner lining of your cheek with the blunt end of a toothpick. There seems to be nothing on the toothpick but there are plenty of tiny cells attached to it. 3. Spread this on a glass slide, put a drop of iodine or methylene blue and leave it for one minute. 4. Remove excess stain by washing the slide in water. When washing, do not wipe the slide so as not to remove the cells 5. Remove excess water by blotting the slide with a tissue paper. 6. Place the cover slip and focus under the LPO/HPO of the microscope. Evaluation 10 mins Self-Assessment Checklist: 5 / 6
