3 Kesler Science Station Lab Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells If you have never used my Kesler Science Station Labs before please download the FREE Start-Up pack from my TPT store. It will provide you with all of the signage and best practices in order to run the station labs in your classroom. The large directions cards included in this file are intended to be read by the leader of the group once the students get to the station. The smaller task cards can be read by another group member. I prefer that each student do their own lab write-up (included at the end of this file), so that they may use it for reference at a later date. The answer key is provided at the end of the document. Lastly, if any of the internet resources no longer work for some reason please let me know via at chris@keslerscience.com. I cannot guarantee that all resources will be available, but I tried to choose ones that have been around for many years.

4 Kesler Science Station Lab Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells Teacher Directions Explore It! I will spend much of my time at this station making sure the students are not wasting time. You will need the diagrams provided. Illustrate It! Make sure to include colored pencils or crayons at this station. I have included diagrams for students that may need extra help. Read It! Print several different copies (I use 6) of the reading passage so that multiple students can read at different paces Organize It! The cards for this activity are attached near the end of this file. Print several sets and then just put them in the basket for kids to pull from. This is also a good one for later in the week to demonstrate mastery too! Students should be encouraged to do the Research and Explore station before attempting this one. I like to label the backs with set numbers because they will get mixed up. Write It! 9 Read It! Read It! Station Directions Each member of the group will read the passage and answer the questions from the task cards on the lab sheet in the Read It! section. It is important to remember that the answers will come directly from the reading passage.

10 Read It! Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells There are many different types of cells. For example, in your body there are blood cells and skin cells and bone cells and even bacteria. All cells, whether from bacteria, human, or any other organism will be one of two general types. In fact, all cells other than bacteria will be one type, and bacterial cells will be the other. And it all depends on how the cell stores its DNA. The nucleus of a cell is a structure in the cytoplasm that is surrounded by a membrane (the nuclear membrane) and contains DNA. Based on whether they have a nucleus, there are two basic types of cells: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells are cells without a nucleus. The DNA in prokaryotic cells is in the cytoplasm rather than enclosed within a nuclear membrane. Prokaryotic cells are found in single-celled organisms, such as bacteria. Organisms with prokaryotic cells are called prokaryotes. They were the first type of organisms to evolve and are still the most common organisms today. Eukaryotic cells are cells that contain a nucleus. Eukaryotic cells are usually larger than prokaryotic cells, and they are found mainly in multicellular organisms. Organisms with eukaryotic cells are called eukaryotes, and they range from fungi to people. Eukaryotic cells also contain other organelles besides the nucleus. An organelle is a structure within the cytoplasm that performs a specific job in the cell. Organelles called mitochondria, for example, provide energy to the cell, and organelles called vacuoles store substances in the cell. Organelles allow eukaryotic cells to carry out more functions than prokaryotic cells can. This allows eukaryotic cells to have greater cell specificity than prokaryotic cells. Ribosomes, the organelle where proteins are made, are the only organelles in prokaryotic cells.

16 Explore It! Explore It! Station Directions One member of the group will read the task cards in order. The group will be responsible for completing each of the tasks that are being read. Each member of the group will then write their conclusions down on the lab sheet in the Explore It! section.

19 Explore It! #1 Explore It! #2 Cells can be classified into either prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells. Look at the two diagrams in front of you (bacteria, and plant & animal cells). 1. On your lab sheet describe at least 3 differences between the bacteria and other 2 cells. The bacteria is an example of a prokaryotic cell. Prokaryotes are single celled organisms that are more primitive than eukaryotic cells. The DNA in prokaryotes is not stored in a nucleus. There is no nucleus. Explore It! #3 Look at Label A on the bacteria. It is pointing to the DNA. Explore It! #4 Plant and animal cells are examples of eukaryotic cells. 1. Describe how the DNA is stored in this prokaryotic cell. Is it organized? Can it be found in one small area? Eukaryotes are either single or multicellular and are much more complex cells. They have organelles which each perform a job in the cell. Eukaryotes have a nucleus which contains the genetic code, or DNA, for the cell.

20 Explore It! #5 Look at Label B on the plant and animal cell. It is pointing to the DNA. 1. Describe how the DNA is stored in these eukaryotic cells. 2. With your new knowledge, explain 2 differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

21 Illustrate It! Illustrate It! Station Directions Each member of the group will draw a quick sketch on the lab sheet the shows they understand the concept that is being taught. Use the colored pencils and markers that are provided. The directions for the sketch are provided on the task card at the table.
