1 9 Star Ki Ancient energetics for a modern life by David R. Walters Dip. Chiro FREEFLOW FENG SHUI Introduction (2017 edition) 9 Star Ki, pronounced kee is an ancient form of oriental astrology. It has its roots in the I Ching (Book of changes) linking too with the Taoist elements and the Feng Shui Bagua. The system was developed and simplified by the Japanese, hence Ki as opposed to Chi. As the name suggests there are 9 different Stars in this form of astrology. Each year one of these stars is activated, and likewise each month and day. Depending on your date of birth you will have a profile of three stars, the first star or BIRTH star is taken from the year you were born and relates to our core being and principal energy. From this, a full profile is made, below I explain the significance of the other two stars. Birth Our basic foundation and deeper hidden, innate self. Inner Our emotive self and which we revert to under stress. Outer Our surface energy and which others see on first contact. Each star relates to a Trigram from the I Ching and one of the 5 Taoist Elements or Transformations. Using this information you can analyze how your star interacts on this energetic level with all the other stars. It is a fascinating and insightful way of looking at your interpersonal relationships and understanding how to create more harmony and balance within your life. Discover your Birth star Below are two examples of how to work out your Birth star. 1) = = 1 2) = = = 2 SOIL Add together all of the numbers in the year, reduce until below 11, then take from 11 - this provides your Birth Star number.

2 The Time factor In addition to creating a personal profile, 9 Star Ki deals with time as well as space, Every day, month and year, a different star holds the commanding and central position within the Lo Shu grid or Ki Map (see diagram), creating a cyclical 9 step spiral. The remaining stars fly around the grid in the sequence shown, allowing us to discover which star is influencing our own energy at any given day, month or year. This is referred to as what House we occupy. For example, this year; 2017, we are currently in an 1 Water Star year. So, putting 1 in the centre of the grid, the stars then fly sequentially forwards along their incremental path to create the following grid is a 9 Fire Star year. Look for your Star and then refer back to the original Ki Map to locate which house you occupy. i.e. the 8 Earth Star is now placed in the East, occupying the 3 Stars original location or House. Original Ki Map The monthly, yearly and even daily cycles effect us on different levels. The House you occupy for the year is a more global and general background influence affecting your relationship with the world and humanity. The Month influence is more immediately felt and affects our work, social activities and community involvements. The daily star influences our Ki Map for 2017 immediate surroundings and family relationships, although in our busy day-to-day lives we can miss this more subtle blend of Ki. Directionology As well as the time factor, 9 Star Ki also provides us with information relating to auspicious and inauspicious directions to travel at any given time. This year; 2017, it is not a good thing to make any permanent or long term moves towards the South. It is also inauspicious to travel directly away from the South i.e. the North. This is just one of many variations of Directionology, another inauspicious movement would be either towards or away from your own Star!

3 The Five Elements (Transformations) The Taoist theory of the five elements or transformations, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water is a further refinement or mood of Chi energy; taking the fundamental Yin / Yang theory of balance and opposites a step further. These transformations have a cyclical harmony and balance, which permeates through and forms all things. They each relate to and are at their most potent at certain times of the day and year. They also have associations with different colours, shapes, organs of the body and is the core principal behind Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. WATER WATER is the dark, quiet, potential and stillness of midnight and midwinter: black and dark blues, irregular shapes and flowing, changeable, fundamental water. WATER supplies nutrients to produce WOOD, yet extinguishes or husbands FIRE. WOOD WOOD is spring time and the upward energetic movement of sunrise: it is all the greens, vertical stripes and plants large and small. WOOD supports FIRE as fuel in a mother/child relationship, yet controls and breaks up EARTH. FIRE FIRE is the heat and intensity of midsummer; it is the height of the midday sun as it illuminates our path, reds, purples and angular shapes. FIRE fuelled by wood to eventually create EARTH, yet it can melt METAL, but is controlled by WATER. EARTH EARTH is the downward movement of the sun and the onset of autumn, also representing the transitional stage between the seasons of the year. Browns, flat, low objects and rocks. SOIL in turn supports and mothers METAL, yet it absorbs and can also direct WATER. METAL METAL is the inward, downward, contracting motion of dusk and late autumn: metallic colours and materials, circular shapes. METAL supports and produces or holds WATER, yet as an axe, can be used to chop down or simply trim TREE. Within this balancing act the elements have a productive, supportive, mother/child interaction or cycle. Where as, when you remove one element or one becomes week or missing, the two transformations adjacent begin to conflict, producing a husbandry or controlling cycle. To mitigate this clash one can introduce the missing, week element to create harmony.

4 The 9 Stars Each of the 9 Stars, with the exception of the 5 star, relates directly to a Trigram from the I Ching; a family member, as well as one of the five transformations detailed above. Listed below each Star is TRIGRAM, I Ching family member, Element and ruling organs. 1 Star KAN - Middle Son - Water - Kidney, bladder, reproductive organs KAN This star is representative of the fluidity of water, the depths of the oceans and energy of a waterfall. Spiritual and philosophical, there is always something happening under the surface. These people are easy going, and adaptable taking time to find a win-win situation to problems and circumstances. 2 Star KUN - Mother - Earth - Stomach, spleen, pancreas KUN This star is representative of nurturing and fertile energy, maternal, sensitivity and social connections. Often working in groups and looking out for the needs of others they are strong, patient and reliable. These people work fastidiously and pay great attention to detail for the benefit of their immediate family and of the greater good. 3 Star CHEN - Eldest Son - Wood - Liver, gall bladder CHEN This star is an energetic outward, upward movement of spring and early morning. 5 5 5 Star NO TRIGRAM (T ai Chi) - Additional Child - Earth - Stomach, spleen, pancreas A pivotal star, the Centre, it is representative of the axis to which all the other stars revolve. These people are often the centre of things and are in touch with all the other stars. This star often experiences turbulence and many ups-and-downs in their life. Extremely strong characters, they can control situations well and have the ability to lead. 6 Star CHIEN - Father - Metal - Lungs, large intestine CHIEN This Star is representative of autumn and evening time, the downward inward movement of the day and year. These people are natural leaders and have natural authoritative skills. They are arbitrators of justice and morality mainly within the family, sometimes rigid and over rational, perfectionists and sefl-critical. 7 Star TUI - Youngest Daughter - Metal - Lungs, large intestine TUI This star represents late autumn and dusk, the time of harvest and rejoice. These people are quick thinkers and easily find a win-win outcome in situations and arguments with their illumination. They are highly active, outgoing and inspirational characters, warm, passionate and communicative.

6 The 9 Houses The 1 House Water - Floating - Potential - Planning This masculine house represents winter and midnight and the north. It is a time for planning, where the seed gathers its strength for the next cycle. A good time for self-development and furthering your spirituality. It is a time of stillness so trying to accomplish too much may be difficult. The 2 House Earth - Germination - Preparation In this feminine house the potential hidden in the 1 house expand out into space, creating a field of growth: with the seed of One having been formed, an atmosphere of fertility is now created in the Earth, but there is still no visible or tangible growth. The 3 House Wood - Growth - Rising - Proceeding This is a masculine house of fresh springtime growth. The seed of 1 begins to expand into the field created by 2, producing movement. This is an active year, with new and often exhilarating experiences, symbolized by Thunder. The 4 House Wood - Rapid growth - Development This is a strong feminine house, wherein the creative impulse of 3 matures into fuller growth and a broader social awareness and expression. The Wind prevails in all directions. The end of your year in the 4 house marks the end of the upward, outward growth stage. The 5 House Earth - Pivot - Centre - Fluctuation A pivotal year, the Centre, the 5 house marks the transition from growth (One through Four) to internal consolidation. If you flagrantly spent your creative energies during the times of 3 and 4, difficulties now increase. We are all born into the Five house, and every nine years we have the opportunity to be reborn, to stabilize and get our bearings.

7 The 6 House Metal - Prosperity - Consolidation This marks the beginning of the internal development stage (6 through 8), generated by the yang, downward and inward moving force of Heaven. Absorbing accomplishments of the prior years, you now have the opportunity to deepen yourself. Legends such as the Labours of Hercules symbolize this house. You meet a clarifying sense of inner resource and social responsibility. The 7 House Metal - Harvest - Joy - Reflection This house represents the harvest time and the reflective tranquillity of the Lake. Now you begin to experience the fruits of your prior labours, as exemplified by the retirement age of 65. Your inner development matures toward self-reflection and emotional and spiritual insights. This is a time of preparation for the challenging demands of the coming Eight house. The 8 House Earth - Change - Revolution 8 is traditionally the number of completion of cycles. In this house, the development of the prior seven years experiences accumulates into concentration (the Mountain), and you arrive at a major turning point. Here you must decide what out of your own development you need to keep, and what to discard. This often signals a major shift of direction. The ages of 21 and 30 are well-known examples of this challenging time. The 9 House Fire - Illumination - Spotlight - Clarity After the completion and reorientation of 8, all the cycle s experiences burst into full illumination. 9 is the number of fullest maturity and clarity. Examples of this house are the ages 31, 40 and 49. You stand on top of the mountain which you built in the Eight house, and peer out at the new horizons of the coming new cycle. This is but a temporary glimpse of the future, and is not yet completely realized, for you soon contract from: the illuminated heights of Nine into the profoundly internalized depths of One. Here you will have come full circle, and you again condense your last nine years of development into the seeds of the next decade s experiences. We can summarize this nine-stage progression with the analogy of a plant s growth: A seed is planted (1); it absorbs nutrients and swells with water (2), then abruptly sends out sprouts and shoots (3), which soon grow into branches and leaves (4). The plant s energy then pauses and reorients itself (5), and then begins to strengthen itself and send down deeper roots (6). The root system and whole plant matures and develops further (7), then begins to form new seeds (8). Finally its fruits and blossoms mature (9), ready to carry the newly formed seeds down to the soil again for implantation as winter approaches (1).
