9 Retrogrades A planet is called retrograde when it appears to be moving backward from our view here on Earth; it isn t actually moving backward, it just appears that way because of the way the planets move in relation to Earth. The only planets that don t turn retrograde are the Sun (since the Earth revolves around the Sun) and the Moon (since the Moon revolves around Earth). The outer planets are retrograde for months at a time every year, so their influence is very subtle. The retrogrades to pay attention to are for Mercury, Venus, and Mars. When these planets are retrograde, their energy doesn t operate properly, and we can experience all sorts of issues. What those issues will be depends on the house the planet is retrograding in. If you were born with the planet retrograde though, you re exempt from the problems because the retrograde energy is natural to you. When the planet isn t retrograde, you might have more issues than everyone else, so if you have any of these three planets retrograde, it s important for you to pay attention to when it is retrograde so you can make the most of the energy. Mercury retrogrades 3-4 times each year for several weeks at a time. Since Mercury rules communications and technology, this retrograde tends to throw everything off in our modern world. Venus retrogrades about every year-and-a-half for about a month-and-a-half or so. Since Venus rules money and relationships, these two areas of life tend to have greater difficulty; we also have a hard time finding pleasure in anything. Mars retrogrades about every two years, and since Mars rules energy and drive, we can be lazy and unmotivated. Retrogrades can be the most difficult time of the year for you because they throw a monkey wrench in your plans. They re a lesson in flexibility, forcing us to adapt. The thing that they re best for is do-overs and the re- s: revise, redo, revisit, rearrange, etc. So when you see a retrograde coming, know that you ll need to be flexible with the areas of life ruled by the house(s) that will be impacted, and try not to start anything new or make any concrete plans. Instead, attempt to do something over again. We all have things that we d like to have another chance with, and retrogrades give us that chance.
