1 Spelling Mechanics Homeschool Word Study Sample of Level 7 Project: The Earth, Sun, Moon, and Stars On the actual CD you will receive a.doc copy that can be manipulated to fit your personal word needs. Also, all files will be separated into unit folders, not on one PDF document and will be labeled as such. Please me with any questions. 2 Unit 23: The Earth, Sun, Moon, and Stars In this lesson students learn: to understand and use many Greek and Latin roots relating to the earth, sun, moon, and stars. Lesson Focus This unit can be used at any time. The student page for this unit contains directions for the project. You may not find it necessary to print the page and may post directions in some way. Students may use their word study notebooks to write notes for their part of the project. At the end of this unit, students will be responsible for knowing the meanings of the 13 roots. The class will create jointly a large art project by creating symbols for the sun, moon, earth, and stars on a large strip of roll paper. For example, a horizontal piece of roll paper could include a large landscape to hold words relating to things found or grown on the earth. The sun, moon, and stars could be posted above the landscape. On this paper, students working in teams will place note cards containing information relating to a word root. The note cards will be grouped around the appropriate celestial body or item on the earth landscape. For example, one team s note cards with words based on the root herbi will be placed around pictures of things relating to plants herbivores, herbal medicine, herbs, herbicides, etc. Instead of creating one large class mural or bulletin board, student teams may present a poster containing their root and the words built from the root. The Scrutinizing Words document will be used for this activity. However, it is not meant to be an exhaustive list of words containing the roots. Students should expand their search for words containing their root in the dictionary and by using Design215 included in the Launch Pad. Use the table below to see Greek and Latin roots that refer to the earth, sun, moon, and stars. Included are words from Scrutinizing Words for your information. Students will use Scrutinizing Words to find these and dictionaries with etymologies for more. Students will work in teams responsible for finding, defining, understanding and using words containing their assigned root. The final project will be displayed and their team efforts will be presented. Slips of paper containing these roots are at the end of this document and may be printed, cut apart, and given to teams. The following sequence and suggestions for presentation are only suggestions. Depending on the resources you have available to you and your class size, please modify as you wish. Assign a root to each. (Pages containing the roots are at the end of this document and may be printed, cut, and distributed. You need not use all the word forms listed. Adjust the contents of the test if you eliminate any word forms.) Students use resources (Scrutinizing Words, dictionaries with etymologies, Design215, etc.) to find words that contain their root. Students create one note card for every word they find containing their team root. Requirements for the contents of the card are on the student page. The note cards may be 3x5 or 5x7 inch size. You may adapt these directions in any way you wish, including the number of words required of each team. Some teams may find it easier to find words for their roots than others. These teams might be assigned to any root in chart you may have omitted. Have some students trace the symbols of the earth, sun, moon and stars on a large strip of roll paper. The figures may be decorated or left blank and will be posted. Students will attach their note cards to the poster in areas most appropriate for their word, if applicable. Student teams present their words and the information on their note cards to the class. Differentiation: Decide which roots might contain more concrete concepts for some students. Note: A tool to help students to find additional words containing their root is the website Design215, found in the Launch Pad. Students will need to make a judgment as to whether a word might have their root and then look it up in a dictionary with etymologies to make sure. Technology: If desired, this project could be adapted to use technology. For example, students could make electronic whiteboard or PowerPoint slides for each of their words to present. 4 Test: In Part 2, students should note that they should not write any of the roots from the first column as answers in the last column. For example, if they write star after astro, they should not write astro after star in the fourth column. Stell would go there. 6 Unit 23: The Earth, Sun, Moon, and Stars Many words that we use to refer to the earth, the stars, and the moon come from the Greeks and Romans. We already know how combining forms (word parts with a certain meaning) are put together to create more complicated words. In this unit we will focus on those that refer to the earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars. A. General Project Goals In this class project, you will work in a team that will focus on a Greek or Latin root. Here are the steps you will follow. Use resources (such as Scrutinizing Words, dictionaries with etymologies, Design215, etc.) to find words that contain your root. Create one note card for each word you find containing your team root. Your teacher will explain how many words your team will develop. Attach your cards to a large poster depicting symbols of the earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars in a location that is most appropriate for your team s words. For example, the team that develops stell will center their words on a symbol for stars. Your team will present your words and the information on your note cards to the class. B. Requirements for the contents of the card: 1. A word containing the root (example: solar) 2. Include the root and the root s meaning (example: from sol meaning sun ) 3. An illustration, drawn or generated in some other way 4. A definition of the word that contains the root. Include how it relates to the root meaning. solar from sol meaning sun Solar is an adjective meaning having to do with the sun. Solar energy and solar panels have to do with using energy from the sun. The solar system is all of the eight planets (plus Pluto) and asteroids that revolve around the sun. Mattmann and Cowan 23-6 F

There is a good maritime museum on Lake Michigan. 11. The best part of geology is the study of rocks and minerals!
