1 Collaborative, Complex and Critical Decision-Support in Evolving Crisis A Walk through TRIDEC s intermediate Tsunami Early Warning System M. Hammitzsch, S. Reißland, and M. 2 Tsunamis in the Mediterranean Distribution of tsunamis in the southern European Region, covering the period from 1600 BP to The most important tsunamigenic regions are in the Gulf of Cadiz, north of Algeria, southern Italy, along the Hellenic Arc, with its eastern continuation involving Cyprus and Marmara Sea. (Stefano Tinti, 2009) 2
3 Tsunamigenic earthquakes Reported locations of tsunamigenic earthquakes during 11th 15th centuries in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea region (Guidoboni & Comastri 2005a). Large black arrows show relative motions of plates with respect to Eurasia (McClusky et al. 2000, 2003). Bathymetric contours are shown at 500 m interval, and are from GEBCO (1997). (Yolsal et. al, 2007) 3
4 Tsunamigenic zones The tsunamigenic zones of the Mediterranean Sea after Papadopoulos, The tsunami potential of each one zone is classified in a relative scale according to the frequency of occurrence and intensity of tsunamis. A sketch map of the known tsunamigenic zones in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea region. Large black arrows show relative motions of plates with respect to Eurasia (McClusky et al. 2000, 2003). Bathymetric contours are shown at 1000 m interval, and are from GEBCO (1997). Seismicity of the region reported by USGS NEIC during for M > 4 is shown by small open circles (Yolsal et al., 2007). 4
