4 1 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank all of those who contributed, in many different ways, to this first edition of the Philippine Palm Viper North American Regional Studbook. In particular I would like to thank the Herpetology staff at the Audubon Zoo: Kevin Bowler, Dino Ferri, Amy Davis and Nick Hanna for their continued support and expertise. I give special thanks to Kevin and Dino for their encouragement in taking on this project and their time spent reviewing and editing the studbook. I am grateful to the Audubon Zoo for their generous financial support. I would like to thank Katherine Cronin, Population Management Center at Lincoln Park Zoo and Andy Snider, Detroit Zoo, for analyzing the data in the studbook. I would also like to thank Andreas Gumprecht for granting permission to reproduce the map of the Philippine islands and for the countless bits of information he provided. Many thanks to Heather Stanley for assisting with the layout design of the cover and Chris Friedrichs for assisting in the design of the accompanying compact disc as well as miscellaneous technical support. Finally, thank you to all registrars, curators and keepers and their respective institutions who provided information necessary to complete this book. SUGGESTED CITATION: Dietz, R. 5 2 OVERVIEW Systematics Trimeresurus mcgregori Taylor, 1919 Trimeresurus flavomaculatus mcgregori Leviton, 1961 Description The Philippine palm viper (also called McGregor s pitviper and Batanes bamboo pitviper) is a small semiarboreal pitviper achieving a total length of up to 90 cm. Females are often significantly larger than males both in length and girth. Although once thought to be sexually dichromatic (females being yellow and males being silver or brown), both species of this secretive but aggressive snake display extreme variability in dorsal coloration. Examples include light and dark yellow, orange-yellow, silver or grey, and numerous shades of brown and beige, all of which may or may not be accompanied by a more or less distinct pattern of spots or bands. Ventral coloration is usually white to yellow (Gumprecht, 2002). Dorsal color may gradually turn darker with age in some specimens, especially males. Distribution Islands of Batan and Sabtang in the Batanes group of islands, which is part of the Typhoon Island chain located between Taiwan, China and Luzon, Philippines (Fig. 1). Natural History Very little is known about the natural history and ecology of T. f. mcgregori, primarily due to the high winds, rough waters, lack of adequate airstrips and expense associated with accessing the islands (W. Card, pers. comm.; Lazell, 1992). Gumprecht (2002) describes the climate as rough and dominated by high winds throughout much of the year; February through May being warmer, dry and less windy, while becoming fairly cold December through February. Lazell (1992) describes the island of Batan as being brutally cutover, virtually sheared bald with only scattered trees in ravines. Encounterable primarily at dusk, T. f. mcgregori favors high grasses, underbrush and volcanic rock into which they will readily retreat upon the slightest disturbance or threat (Gumprecht, 2002). Diet consists primarily of rodents (A. Gumprecht, pers. comm.). Other than the fact that they are oviparous, little is known about the reproduction of wild populations of T. f. mcgregori.

6 3 Status of Wild Populations Although fairly common on the islands, pressure from illegal collecting for the pet trade could become a concern in the future. It is thought that the difficult accessibility of the islands combined with the harsh climate may be an advantage for the conservation of the species (Gumprecht, 2002). Fig. 1. 7 4 GENERAL INFORMATION The data which forms this studbook was derived from 14 AZA institutions using International Species Information System (ISIS) Animal Record Keeping System (ARKS) programs. The initial database was derived from institutional ARKS Taxon Reports and Specimen Reports and supported by the ISIS Studbooklike Report. A total of 117 specimens ( ) are entered into the studbook. The birth type of this population represents 62.4% captive hatched and 37.6% wild hatched. The living population consists of 47 specimens (18.29) in 9 institutions. GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE The geographical scope of the first edition of this studbook is limited to North American AZA institutions only. TEMPORAL SCOPE The earliest specimens recorded in the studbook were captured in the early 1980 s. The data are current as of 26 August DESCRIPTION OF DATA FIELDS Stud#: Sex: Hatch Date: Sire: Dam: The permanent identifier assigned to each specimen in the studbook M = Male F = Female? = Unknown Date of Hatch (Day/Month/Year) Studbook number of sire (male parent) is listed if known WILD = Sire never entered captive population MULT = One or more possible captive sires UNK = Specimen of unknown or unrecorded parentage Studbook number of dam (female parent) is listed if known WILD = Dam never entered captive population MULT = One or more possible captive dams UNK = Specimen of unknown or unrecorded parentage Location: Date: Past and present location of the specimen.
