Introduction Geological and Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory (GERS Lab) (2002) Department of Geology, University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. Mission-Promote and facilitate the education and research of the Earth System Science using remote sensing. Bio-Optical Sampling Package
Introduction Current Research Developing a protocol to use remote sensing as a cost effective tool to monitor contamination of mangrove wetlands Agency: Puerto Rico Sea Grant,Period: June 2006-May Monitoring Nutrients in the San Juan Bay Estuary using Hyper spectral Remote Sensing Agency: Puerto Rico Water Resources and Environmental Research Institute Period: March 2005-December 2007 Bio-Optical Properties and Remote Sensing of Coastal Waters Project: Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (CREST) Agency: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Period: Remote Sensing of Benthic Habitats Project: Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS) Agency: National Science Foundation Period:
Problems GERSLAB Lots of geospatial data being produced for each project Provide an organization structure for this data. Develop multiplatform and multiuser visual display of the data for project dissemination. Dr. R. Armstrong using GER-1500
Objectives GERSVIEW Organize data into a Geodatabase structure Develop an ArcIMS Web Mapping Interface Present spatial data created by the Geological and Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory (GERS) Projects via ArcIMS. Create GERSVIEW home web page (launch site)
ArcIMS ArcIMS 9.1 Scalable Extendable Organizational application Map distribution and geographic information system (GIS) data on the Internet. Create easy-to-use, taskfocused applications that use geographic content. Deliver dynamic maps and data via the Web. Share data with others to accomplish tasks.
Configuration Configure Server Computer (Web/Application) Server Install and Configure Supporting Software (Java2SDK, Tomcat 5.028, IIS 6.0) Install ArcIMS 9.1 Create ArcMap Project from Project Data Field Campaign (Data Collection) Create and Customize ArcIMS Web Application Map Interface (Internet)
Research Projects Presence of heavy metals in La Parguera Bioluminescence Bay in Lajas, and Puerto Mosquito Bay in Vieques Differences in the characteristic of bioluminescence. Samples were collected from four different environments: bottom sediments under mangroves mangroves leaves bottom sediments water column. Sampling Mosquito Bay, Vieques
