Sikes Field Doubleheader Preview After going 4-0 in the USF Under Armour Invitational over the weekend, the Georgia State softball team heads to Macon, Ga. for a doubleheader against in-state rival Mercer. GSU has faced Mercer more than any other team in program history. This doubleheader will be the 73rd and 74th meetings between the teams. Georgia State leads the all-time series with 54 wins to 18. Last season the Panthers and Bears split a doubleheader at the Robert E. Heck Softball Complex. The 11-2 Panthers are off to their best start since 2008 when GSU opened the season Georgia State are winners of eight straight which is the fourth longest winning streak in program history. At the plate, GSU is led by true freshman Ivie Drake who is leading the Sun Belt Conference in batting average (.564), slugging percentage (.949) and on-base percentage (.638). The Panthers will also look to offensive leader Callie Alford. The senior leads the team in home runs (6), RBI (19) and runs scored (16). She is also third in batting average (.405) and doubles (3). Mercer is 10-9 overall this season and is coming off a 3-1 weekend as the host of the Black & Orange Challenge. The Bears opened the tournament with an 8-1 win over Buffalo before falling to Evansville 6-4 on Friday, Feb. 27. Mercer then bounced back with two wins on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Bears got revenge with a 7-1 win over Evansville before completing the sweep of Buffalo 9-8. Mercer s Sunday game against Kennesaw State was postponed due to rain. For the second time in three weeks, Ivie Drake was named Sun Belt Player of the Week after leading GSU to a perfect 4-0 weekend in Clearwater, Fla. at the USF Under Armour Invitational. She continued her hot start to 2015 at the plate by finishing the weekend 8-for-12 with five runs scored and six RBI. Individually, GSU is led by freshman Ivie Drake who leads the conference in batting average (.564), on-base percentage (.638) and slugging percentage (.949). She is also tied for fifth with six doubles. Lauren Coleman is fifth in on-base percentage (.553), while Callie Alford (.905) is second and Megan Litumbe (.769) is sixth in the Sun Belt standings for slugging percentage. Callie Alford s leading the team in both home runs (6) and RBI (19). She launched four home runs and finished with 10 RBI in four games of the Panther Invitational to lead GSU to a 4-0 record during the tournament. On the career record list, Alford is climbing the ladder in both categories. With her six bombs this year, she has moved into fourth on the career homers list. Alford is just three long balls short of being in a three-way tie for first. Her 19 RBI so far in 2015 has moved her into third place on the career RBI list with 131. 3 GSU s Offensive Show... In four games of the Panther Innovational, Georgia State scored 49 runs, hit 11 homers and 10 doubles while defeating its opponents by an average of 7.5 runs per game. Last year was one of GSU s most success at the plate as a team in program history. The 2014 Panthers finished in the top five in six major single-season team offensive categories. Through 13 games this season compared to last, the 2015 Panthers have scored more runs (113-96), hit more doubles (25-12) and homers (20-15) and recorded more RBI (97-89). Freshman Drake Named Sun Belt Player of the Week... Ivie Drake was named Sun Belt Player of the Week after posting a.667 batting average with five runs scored, five RBI, three doubles, a home run and three walks in four games to open The true freshman opened the season 2-for-2 a the plate, including a double, walk and run scored, against No. 17 Auburn. Drake then went 4-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored, three RBI, two walks and two doubles to lead the Panthers to a pair of comeback victories. The catcher wrapped up the weekend by driving in the winning run with a walk-off single against Eastern Illinois. She also hit a game-tying, solo homer in the bottom of the fifth. Litumbe Powers Panthers Past Winthrop... Sophomore right fielder Megan Litumbe blasted two homers and drove in five runs to led Georgia State to an 8-7 come-frome-behind victory over Winthrop on Friday, Feb. 13. Anderson Leads the Way... After a dramatic come-from-behind win over Winthrop, Taylor Anderson led the way as Georgia State topped Ball State in GSU s second game of the day. The preseason all-conference selection finished 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Game Notes Stanfield s First at GSU... Junior transfer Chelsea Stanfield earned her first win a GSU uniform on Friday, Feb. 13 when the Panthers came from behind to defeat Winthrop. The lefty pitched three innings in relief and allowed just one run on two hits to help Georgia State to the 8-7 win. She followed up that performance by pitching a complete game against Ball State to get her second victory of the day and season. Program First... For the first time in Georgia State softball history, the Panthers opened the season against a ranked opponent when GSU played No. 17 Auburn on Feb. 12. The Tigers defeated the Panthers 20-8 but GSU s eight runs are the most that have been scored against undefeated Auburn in 12 games this season. Historically Challenging... Georgia State s 2015 schedule is one of the toughest in program history and features 14 games against opponents currently ranked in the top 25. After two games against No. 16/17 Auburn, the Panthers will travel to face No. 4/5 Alabama and No. 25 Kansas twice. The Panthers then return to Atlanta to host No. 24 South Alabama for a three-game conference series. Georgia State s final six games against ranked opposition are all on the road. First a threegame set at No. 7 UL Lafayette followed by a doubleheader at No. 12 Florida State. The final ranked team on the Panthers schedule is No. 8 Georgia. Internet Radio Schedule Gives Historic Exposure... Georgia State will make its internet radio debut against Savannah State on Friday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. in Game 2 of the Panther Invitational. The internet-radio schedule features a program record 17 games that will be broadcast. All games will be available on com and through the Georgia State Athletics mobile app. Eight Straight... Georgia State finished 2014 with a overall record giving the Panthers eight straight seasons with 30 or more wins. GSU has won at least 30 games during each of head coach Roger Kincaid s first four seasons. The Panthers have also picked up five wins against ranked opponents over the past three seasons. Power at the Plate... After blasting a program record 59 home runs last year, the Panthers will have plenty of pop in 2015 as 55 of those homers were hit by players returning to the field this season. In 2014, Taylor Anderson led the way with 14 home runs which was the fourth highest total in the Sun Belt. Lauren Coleman and Megan Litumbe finished tied for second with nine homers each. Preseason Honors... Taylor Anderson and Lauren Coleman were voted to the preseason All-Sun Belt team after both received NFCA South All-Region third team honors last season. Coleman was aalso n All- Sun Belt first-team selection last year. As a team, Georgia State was picked to repeat as third-place finishers in the Sun Belt Conference.
