Table of Contents Introduction... 3 Nonliving Things... 4 Characteristics of Living Things... 6 Conclusion Conclusion Living and nonliving things surround us wherever we go. Do you remember the different characteristics that living things share? Can you describe them all? 2 11
Finally, living things are able to reproduce. Humans can have babies. Introduction Living and nonliving things are around us all the time. Both plants and animals are living things. Dogs can have puppies. Birds can lay eggs. Sand, rocks, and glass are examples of nonliving things. Flowering plants make seeds that can grow into new plants. 10 3
4 Nonliving Things Nonliving things are classified into two groups. The first group is nonliving things that were never part of a living thing. A marble is an example. A marble is made of glass. The glass the marble is made of was never alive. All living things grow. The food animals eat and green plants make gives them energy. Some of this energy is used for growth. Living things change when their environment changes. For example, if it gets colder, birds fluff up their feathers to keep warm. When autumn comes, many trees lose their leaves. This helps them survive through the winter. 9
Another characteristic of living things is that they get rid of waste. Waste is something not needed by the plant or animal. Animals get rid of solid and liquid waste. Plants release waste as a gas. The second group is nonliving things that were once alive. Sometimes living things do not survive. If something was once living but no longer has the characteristics of a living thing, it is dead. Sometimes it can be used to make something new. Paper is made from trees that were living things at one time. However, paper is a nonliving thing. 8 5
Characteristics of Living Things All living things share some characteristics. All living things also move. Animals move in different ways to get from place to place. Animals can walk, swim, crawl or fly. Plants cannot move in these ways. Plants move by growing. g The first characteristic they share is that they need food. Food gives living things energy and helps them grow. Animals eat food. Green plants make their own food. Many kinds of living things are found on land. They all need to take in air and other gases. 6 7
