Inside this issue: Give Snow Plows Room 2 Commercial Enhancement Grant Program Board of Trustee Vacancies GL Center 3 Poker Run 4 Fun Page Town Manager s Musings Our Winter Carnival last weekend turned into Spring Splash according to one resident comment heard recently. After such an amazing snow year, we were disappointed with the timing of the February thaw. Nonetheless, the Winter Carnival fought through the weather changes and the Town was packed with visitors. The party at Poncho and Lefty s was a great success too and the fireworks and the costumes were amazing, as always. As we head toward springtime, I want to provide a brief update on the projects we have on tap for We submitted a Department of Local Affairs Tier 2 grant application, requesting $500,000 on January 31, 2017 in an effort to augment funding for our Streetscape and Infrastructure Improvements project. We are also working with our consultants to sell the bonds form our successful bond election to receive $4.3 million for this three phase project in Grand Lake. On February 14, 2017, I met with Diamondback Engineering, along with our Public Works Director and Water Superintendent to review Phase 1 elements of the project. Grand Avenue boardwalks, street lighting, and utilities are the primary goals of Phase 1. Our West Portal Bridge project is planned for construction this year. Costs have risen since the project initially was conceived back in 2010 and kicked off in Nonetheless, we are in a position to move forward this year with Town Board support. We are working with Benesch Engineering on the offsite bridge project. We met for the FOR/FIR review with Benesch and CDOT representatives on February 1st to review the entire scope of the project and necessary modifications were identified. All required work on our REDI grant to develop a Business Plan for the Grand Lake Center ended on January 31, We received work product from O2 Creative and from their subcontractor, Create Buzz. Final touches on the web page and work on our logo and signage for the interior and exterior of the building was also completed in time to turn in. Refinements are still under way by our consultants on interior and exterior signage considerations, the logo, the website and other final elements. On January 31, 2017, Dave Johnson, our Water Superintendent, received approval of Drinking Water Final Plans and Specifications for Construction of our new 300,000 gallon Water Storage Tank. We will demolish our existing 250,000 gallon tank. The new 300,000 tank will be a buried, cast-in-place concrete water tank. Ken Stasco, Bernie McGinn, Public Works Director and I met on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 to review lighting options for the Community House. We are working with Barbizon L i g h t i n g C o m p a n y i n D e n v e r, C O. Future fund raising efforts are under consideration to help refinish the flooring. That s all for now, see you around town! Jim White
2 Page 2 Please Give Snow Plows Plenty of Room CALENDAR OF EVENTS February 19 Snowshoe at the Kawuneeche Center in RMNP February 20 Full Moon Ski February 25 Flight for Life Poker Run February 25 & 26 Nordic Race March 3-4 Grand Lake Ice Fishing Contest Catch & Release March 11 Full Moon Ski The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is asking motorists to give snow plows plenty of room to do their jobs for the safety of everyone on the road. There are three main dangerous maneuvers that all motorists should avoid around plows: Tailgating Plows need to drop deicer and sand, so make sure you stay back three to four car lengths of space. If you re too close, deicer and sand could hit your car. You also never know when a plow might need to suddenly stop make sure you have plenty of room to do the same. Passing on the right Never a good idea! Plows are designed to push all the snow, slush, rocks and other debris to the right of the plow. All that debris will could damage your car and temporarily blind you. Passing during tandem/echelon plowing Tandem/echelon plowing staggers multiple plows along the width of roadway to clear the entire road in one sweep. Passing between plows working in this manner is extremely dangerous. Take your time and stay behind the plow we promise the best road is behind the plows, not in front of them! Remember - Bow to the Plow! Grand Lake Nordic Center Race Join us on February 25th and February 26th for a freestyle Nordic Race to benefit The National Sports Center for the Disabled Competitive Nordic Program. All proceeds from the event will go to the NSCD! For more information contact the Grand Lake Nordic Center at Commercial Enhancement Grant Program The Grand Lake Commercial Enhancement Grant Program is available to allow Grand Lake businesses and organizations the opportunity to receive a matching grant for aesthetic property improvements within the Town. Applications for the Spring deadline may be submitted to the Town Planning Department by Monday, May 1, 2017, at Town Hall, 1026 Park Ave, or mail to P. O. Box 99, Grand Lake, CO For information or go to the Town s website And Winter slumbering in the open air, Wears on his smiling face a dream of Spring!" Samuel Taylor Coleridge
