Fitting Woodcock with Argos satellite transmitters in France Yves FERRAND & Jean-Louis CAZENAVE

Project : woodcock fitted in European Russia in autumn 04 Questions : - What are the routes taken by woodcock during the prenuptial and postnuptial migrations? - What are the number, location and duration of stop-over? - What is the impact of weather conditions on the timing of departure and migration chronolgy? ONCFS/CNB Agreement signed on 7 March 04 Mission in Great-Britain from 3 to 5 March 04 to learn how to fit Woodcock with a satellite tag

Where are we? Satellite tags were bought at Microwave Telemetry, and tested in autumn 04. These tags weigh 9.5 g and their battery is charged by a solar panel. Because of difficulties with Russian administration, woodccok were fitted in France. Three sites were chosen by mutual agreement. Forest of La Corbière (35) Ringers Franck Drouyet David Tannoux Eric Bocquier Frédéric Delamarre Sébastien Painchaud CEL (40) Ringers Jean-Marc Desbieys Jean-Michel Boinot Sébastien Daubriac Staff / fitting Yves Ferrand François Gossmann Damien Coreau Pierre Launay Domaine du Liby (07) Puechabon (34) Ringers Fabrice Etienne Luc Aurousseau Dominique Fialon

Woodcock were fitted following the «English» method. D. Tannoux

ARGOS system and specifications of transmissions The satellite tag has a duty cycle of 0 hours transmission followed by 48 hours in sleep mode Locations are distributed in 8 classes depending on transmission quality; we retain only 3 classes: - (500 m < < 500 m) - (50 m < < 500 m) - 3 (< 50 m)

- Effect on stop-over Minimum temperature April 3 April 4 April

- Effect on stop-over Snowfall

- Effect on stop-over Ground temperature

- Effect on stop-over Usually we observe: decrease of temperature increase of barometric pressure An example: Weather conditions from st to 0 April at Briansk region where Remeze and Andeol stopped

- Effect on date of arrival on breeding sites In the last part of migration bad weather conditions do not lead to long stop-over, they just delay arrival on breeding site. Woodccok migrate even in case of head wind, low temperature and snowfall.

Summary of observations in spring 05 Temperature is one of the main meteorological factors which has an effect on Woodcock spring migration. It is associated with an inverse evolution of barometric pressure. Effect of wind is usually occasional. Till 0/5 knots, there is usually no effect. At a higher speed, it has an influence on migration and can be the cause of drifts observed on some birds. Frozen and/or snowy soils seem to stop migration in spring. Sky condition (cloudy or not) can facilitate or slow down migration but they stop movements only in extreme cases of bad weather except in the last part of migration. Except temperature, no factor has an effect determining to it alone.

Conclusions - Fitting held in check - Satellites tags without any problem - No lost bird (predation, death after fitting,.) A total success to be renewed First exploitation of results in 06 in a common scientific paper with English biologists (A. Hoodless, Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust) Visit the website
