1 Crossings Christian School Academic Guide Middle School Division Grades 5-8 Mathematics (Core - Level: 08) Course Outline Exponents and Exponential Functions s will simplify expressions with zero and negative exponents. s will evaluate exponential expressions. s will write numbers in scientific and standard notation. s will use scientific notation. s will multiply powers. s will work with scientific notation. s will raise a power to a power. s will raise a product to a power. s will divide powers with the same base. s will raise a quotient to a power. s will form geometric sequences. s will use formulas when describing geometric sequences. s will evaluate exponential functions. s will graph exponential functions. s will model exponential growth. s will model exponential decay.

2 Graphs and Functions s will interpret, sketch, and analyze graphs. s will identify relations and functions. s will evaluate functions. s will model functions using rules, tables, and graphs. s will write function rules using a table. s will write equations of a direct variation. s will use ratios and proportions with direct variations. s will solve inverse variations. s will compare direct and inverse variations. s will write rules for arithmetic sequences. s will use inductive reasoning in continuing number patterns.

3 , Area and Volume s will find the area of rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids, and circles. s will identify space figures. s will identify space figures by their net. s will find the surface and volume area of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres. s will know that the section created by the intersection of a plane and a sphere is a circle. s will estimate and compute the area of irregular figures.

4 Rational Numbers s will add rational numbers using models and rules. s will subtract rational numbers. s will multiply rational numbers. s will divide rational numbers. s will use the Distributive Property. s will simplify algebraic equations. s will identify properties. s will use deductive reasoning. s will find theoretical probability. s will find experimental probability. s will find the probability of independent events. s will find the probability of dependent events.

5 Solving Equations s will solve two-step equations. s will use the Distributive Property when combining like terms. s will use the Distributive Property when solving equations. s will find ratio and rates. s will solve proportions. s will solve proportions using similar figures. s will use scales when measuring indirectly. s will define a variable in terms of another variable. s will use the distance formula. s will find percent of change. s will find percent error. s will find square roots. s will estimate and use square roots. s will use the Pythagorean Theorem. s will identify right triangles.

6 Solving Inequalities s will identify solutions of inequalities. s will graph and write inequalities. s will solve inequalities using addition. s will solve inequalities using subtraction. s will solve inequalities using multiplication. s will solve inequalities using division. s will solve multi-step inequalities with variables on one side. s will solve multi-step inequalities with variables on both sides. s will solve compound inequalities which contain the words and or or. s will solve equations that involve absolute value. s will solve inequalities that involve absolute value.

7 Systems of Equations and Inequalities s will solve systems by graphing. s will analyze special types of systems. s will solve systems using substitution. s will solve systems by adding or subtracting. s will solve systems by multiplying. s will write systems of linear inequalities. s will graph linear inequalities. s will write and use linear inequalities with real-world situations. s will solve systems of linear inequalities by graphing. s will model real-world situations using systems of linear inequalities.

8 Variables, Function Patterns, and Graphs s will model relationships with variables and equations. s will simplify and evaluate expressions and formulas. s will simplify and evaluate expressions containing grouping symbols. s will classify and compare numbers. s will write function rules. s will understand relationships of quantities in a function. s will analyze data using scatter plots. s will find central tendency using mean, median, mode, and range. s will make, use, and read stem-and-leaf plots.
