1 Math 6 Extended Prince William County Schools Pacing Guide (Crosswalk) Teacher focus groups have assigned a given number of days to each unit based on their experiences and knowledge of the curriculum. It is recommended that teachers stay as close as possible to the pacing guidelines to ensure that all of the have been taught prior to the SOL Test, and that, as students move within the Division, their math instruction remains consistent. Ongoing review should occur throughout the year. Teachers may find the full wording of the objectives, along with the essential knowledge and skills to be learned, in the Unit Plans. These documents are available on the Math Web site at Unit plans created by the Teacher Focus Groups provide suggestions for learning experiences as well as resources to support instruction. (11 days) Unit 1: Number Sense Describe and compare data, using ratios with appropriate notation. Describe fractions, decimals and percents as ratios Identify a given fraction, decimal or percent from a representation. Demonstrate equivalent relationships among fractions, decimals and percents. Compare and order fractions, decimals and percents. Identify and represent integers on a number line. (7 days) Unit 2: Intro to Integers 6.3 Order and compare integers. Identify and describe absolute value of integers. Demonstrate absolute value using a number line. 7.1e Determine the absolute value of a rational number. Identify the coordinates of a point in a coordinate plane. Graph ordered pairs in a coordinate plane Identify and describe the axes and quadrants of a coordinate plane.
2 (11 days) Unit 3: Exponents, Scientific Notation and Order of Operations Investigate and describe patterns of positive exponents and perfect squares. Recognize powers of ten with positive exponents by examining patterns. 6.5 Recognize powers of ten with negative exponents by examining patterns. 7.1 Write a power of 10 with a negative exponent in fraction and decimal Form. Recognize or write a number greater than zero in scientific notation without the use of a calculator. Compare, order, and determine equivalent relationships among fractions, decimals, and percents including rational numbers and numbers in scientific notation. Determine the square root of a perfect square less than or equal to 400. Evaluate whole number expressions using order of operations and without a calculator. 6.8 (13 days) Unit 4: Integer Operations Model addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of integers using pictorial representations of concrete manipulatives. 7.3 Add, subtract, multiply and divide integers, and simplify the expressions. (15 days) Unit 5: Fractions Demonstrate multiple representations of multiplication and division of fractions. Multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers without calculators a
3 (12 days) Unit 6: Problem solving Estimate solutions and then solve single-step and multi-step practical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. Estimate solutions and then solve single-step and multi-step practical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals.
