1 Kāhuna Nānā Uli Climatology & Meteorology Kālaianiau (climatology) were kahu with important roles in Hawaiian society. Using their observational skills, detailed moon calendars predicting weather, tides, ocean conditions and weather phenomena were created. These observations and predictions were used in understanding farming and fishing cycles. Names for climate zones, rains and winds were recorded in writing and used to describe patterns and places. The practice of Kālaianiau is also extremely important in sailing and ocean activities. Climatologists (Kanaka Kālaianiau) study the atmosphere s physical characteristics, motions, and processes. The best known application of this knowledge is forecasting the weather or meteorology (Kilo `ōuli i ke au o ka manawa). Climatologists attempt to identify and interpret climate trends, understand past weather, and predict today s weather.
