2 Raytheon Information Technology and Scientific Services Division Science and Technology Corporation Enterprise Electronics Corporation Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology SAIC, Center for Atmospheric Physics AccuWeather The AMS/Industry Undergraduate Scholarship Program, now entering its eleventh year, is designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. Prospective candidates from the fields of atmospheric sciences, oceanography, hydrology, chemistry, computer sciences, mathematics, engineering, and physics who intend to pursue careers in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences are encouraged to apply. The scholarships are based on merit and awarded to students who demonstrate potential for accomplishment in these fields. The scholarships are available to students who will be juniors in the fall of The award is renewed for the senior year based on the recipient s performance and the recommendation of a faculty advisor. The AMS is joining with four leading environmental science and service corporations and one federal agency to offer five 2001/2002 undergraduate scholarships in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. Organizations collaborating with the Society in the program are, Raytheon Information Technology and Scientific Services Division, Science and Technology Corporation, Enterprise Electronics Corporation, Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology, and SAIC, Center for Atmospheric Physics. The Society and U.S. organizations, in pursuing the program, seek to augment the nation s supply of promising young scientists in fields vital to the nation s future. The effort is designed to help young students at a critical time in their educational lives and to attract them to fulfilling and useful careers. The fast-growing participation in the program by industries is evidence of their environmental awareness and their intention to preserve the quality of life in the United States in the coming years. The AMS encourages applications from women, minorities, and disabled students, traditionally underrepresented in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. Eligibility requirements Scholarships are available to full-time students entering their junior year in the fall of the 2001/2002 academic year. Two categories of students are eligible: 1) Students who are enrolled or who are planning to enroll in a course of study leading to a bachelor s degree in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences. 2) Students who are enrolled in a program leading to a bachelor s degree in science or engineering who have demonstrated a clear intent to pursue a career in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences following completion of appropriate specialized education at the graduate level. Clear intent must be demonstrated by presentation of a proposed program of study for the junior and senior years designed to prepare the student for admission to a graduate program in the atmospheric or related discipline, and enforcement of the student s 3050 Vol. 81, No. 12, December 2000

3 plans by submission of a written statement from one or more faculty members familiar with his or her objectives. Applicants must have successfully completed two years of study by August 2001 at an accredited institution with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or hold permanent resident status. There are no age restrictions. Evaluation and selection Evaluation of applicants will be based on applicant s performance as an undergraduate student, including academic records and recommendations. Selection will be made by the AMS Executive Committee based on recommendations from the AMS Committee of Judges for Undergraduate Awards. The AMS does not prepare written evaluations of either successful or unsuccessful candidates. Stipend The awards are for $2000 for a ninemonth period and an additional $2000 for a subsequent nine-month period in the senior year. AMS may terminate a scholarship when a student has not maintained satisfactory proficiency, when a student is no longer a full-time student, or when a student is no longer enrolled in a program preparing for a degree in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences, as determined by AMS. Science and Technology Corporation Science and Technology Corporation (STC) is a leader in atmospheric sciences and related remote sensing research and development activities, with a highly qualified staff providing technical professional services to the U.S. Government (NASA, NOAA, FAA, NSF, USCG, and DoD), industry, and international organizations at 15 locations in 10 states in the United States and in Europe. STC is involved in development and use of ground- and space-based lidars for cloud and atmospheric aerosol, gas, water vapor, and toxic chemical agent measurements; analysis and modeling of global coverage of clouds, aerosols, ozone, water vapor, and other trace gases; environment impact of NASP; radiation propagation studies; global and mesoscale model development; lightning risk mitigation; fabrication of lidars, visibility sensors, and toxic chemical filtration devices; aircraft wake vortex studies; chemical and microbiological laboratory projects; and support to the Global Change Initiative through a variety of research projects, including participation in the Earth Observing System (EOS) program, and the operation of the International Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Project Office. Enterprise Electronics Corporation On May 3, 1999, powerful tornadoes ravaged Oklahoma. Warnings from the National Weather Service and live, on-air radar presentations by KFOR (NBC), KOCO (ABC), and KWTV (CBS) saved many lives. Serious TV weathercasters demand and use reliable Doppler weather radars for immediate warnings to viewers during severe weather periods. All three major network stations in Oklahoma City own radars manufactured by Enterprise Electronics Corporation (EEC). EEC has installed over 80 weather radars 3052 Vol. 81, No. 12, December 2000

5 in the US TV Market and over 700 worldwide. For the TV market, EEC builds weather radars that project the best on-air look through SGI O2 workstations running Weather Windows software. TV stations have an important public service function to perform, so providing for the distribution of radar imagery via web connectivity and distribution of real-time data through vertical blanking interval transmission is an important factor in all markets. EEC delivers data distribution rights with its superior, reliable product. Enterprise Electronics Corporation is the stable, dependable partner that all radar users need for the long term. In addition to products designed for broadcasters, EEC manufactures a full line of weather radars for military forecasters and international meteorological forecast centers. Available antennas range in size from 3 to 28 ft. Transmitters are delivered in X-, C-, or S-Band and are either magnetron- or klystron-based. Digital or analog receivers, mobile or fixed configurations, and a full range of control and presentation software round out the product line. Both meteorologists and hydrologists use EEC s advance imaging software: WARN (Wide Area Radar Network) for area compositing; EDGE (Enterprise Doppler Graphics Environment) for sophisticated application of algorithms related to meteorology and hydrology; and RADSYS 3000, a low-priced control and display system running on Windows 98 or Windows NT operating systems. Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology The Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research, more briefly known as the Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology (OFCM), is an interdepartmental office established because Congress and the Executive Office of the President recognized the importance of full coordination of federal meteorological activities. The mission of this interagency office is to ensure the effective use of federal meteorological resources by leading the systematic coordination of operational weather requirements and services, and supporting research, among the federal agencies. The 15 federal departments and agencies engaged in meteorological activities participate in the OFCM s coordination and cooperation infrastructure, providing representatives who lead and serve on program councils, committees, working groups, and joint action groups. These interagency groups coordinate activities and needs across a set of nine key focus areas targeted at 21 st century priorities. These areas are aviation weather, space weather, weather information for surface transportation, climate monitoring and services, cooperative research, observing capabilities, modeling and prediction, information technology and communications, and environmental information. In addition to providing this coordinating infrastructure, the OFCM prepares operations plans, conducts studies, and responds to special inquiries and investigations. Recent examples of effective OFCM coordination include the expansion of agency participation in the annual Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference and more in-depth examination of the tropical cyclone warning system from observations, through analysis, forecasting, warning, dissemination, to public response to such information. The OFCM has also led the development of weather support requirements for surface transportation, co-hosting a symposium in 1999 with the Federal Highway Administration and developing the first national requirements document for weather information for surface transportation. The OFCM has also recently hosted a federal workshop on atmospheric transport and diffusion modeling, bringing together scientists and users from across the federal government to assess current capabilities and to set directions for the future. 6 rum on aviation weather in July 2000, gathering representatives from the airlines, general aviation, air traffic controllers, researchers, and educators from around the country to assess the opportunities to implement new technologies and processes within the framework of the National Aviation Weather Initiatives published in In addition, the office has improved the content and the readability of the annual Federal Plan for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research. The OFCM will continue to coordinate the cooperative support and backup among the federal weather service providers and is developing a national strategy for environmental information in the 21 st century. SAIC, Center for Atmospheric Physics Science Applications International Cooperation (SAIC) is the nation s largest employee-owned research and engineering company, with more than 41,000 employees worldwide. Located in McLean, Virginia, SAIC s Center for Atmospheric Physics has a dedicated team of scientists that has advanced the state-of-the-art in weather analysis, forecasting, and atmospheric dispersion for more than a decade. Center staff members are involved in research spanning all scales of atmospheric circulation. While primarily a research organization, the Center has developed the highest resolution operational weather forecasting model currently in use. The Operational Multiscale Environment model with Grid Adaptivity (OMEGA) can be rapidly reconfigured to provide high resolution (down to 1km) forecasts anywhere in the world. In addition the Center s embedded Atmospheric Dispersion Model (ADM) extends the state-of-the-art in hazardous aerosol and gas dispersion modeling. Center staff members currently use OMEGA to support defense, environment, and international requirements. This includes examining point-to-regional high fidelity weather forecasting (including satellite data ingest and advanced four dimensional data assimilation), air quality, hazardous material transport, atmospheric chemistry, scavenging and removal of atmospheric pollutants, and longrange detection of trace materials for treaty verification. AccuWeather AccuWeather, Inc. is the world s leading commercial weather service, providing accurate forecasts, value-added weather data and fully integrated weather systems to more than 15,000 clients around the world, plus millions of users of accuweather.com on the Internet. AccuWeather is best known for its services to over 1000 radio and television stations and newspapers, 1200 Internet sites and major news organizations.
