1 Hong Kong Observatory Summer Placement Programme 2018 Training Programme : supervise the student. A mentor from the Hong Kong Observatory with relevant expertise will Training Period : 8 weeks, starting from 4 June 2018 (Monday). General Requirements : Applicants should (1) be permanent residents of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); (2) be local or overseas full-time undergraduate students; (3) have academic background and specific knowledge/skills as specified in Annex II; and (4) be fluent in both Chinese and English. Scholarship : A scholarship at a rate of HK$ 9,800 per month will be granted by the Observatory to the students who have successfully enrolled in the Programme. An agreement will be signed between the Observatory and the University/Institution. The Observatory reserves the right to choose to withdraw the scholarship, on a pro-rata basis, should the offer be terminated for any reasons. Student Status : Students will work at the Observatory as student trainees. There will be no employer-employee relationship between the Observatory and the placement students. Their status as registered students of their respective University/Instituion will be maintained. A2a Project Title Job description Subject and year of study required Development and comparison of satellite cloud picture simulation algorithms using radiative transfer models Satellite cloud pictures are digital photos of the Earth s atmosphere across certain portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. This study explores the use of CRTM (Community Radiative Transfer Model) in computing simulated satellite images based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) model output. Comparison would be made against existing algorithms in use at HKO which employ another radiative transfer model. Physics, Mathematics or Earth System Science 3 rd year of study or above Specific knowledge / skills required / remarks Strong academic background in linear algebra or theoretical physics; knowledge of electromagnetism desirable but not essential.

3 A2b Big Data investigations of aircraft flight data Aircraft flight paths and planning are highly susceptible to weather events. This study aims to identify and uncover patterns behind large quantities of aircraft flight data in relation to weather objects using Big Data methods. Evaluate Himawari-8 satellite derived rainfall products by comparing with actual raingauge and radar reflectivity measurements for further fine tuning and optimization. Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science 3 rd year of study or above Strong programming skills in R, Python or equivalent; experience in Big Data analytics a plus. A4a Inter-comparison between Himawari-8 satellite derived rainfall products and raingauge/radar reflectivity measurement data. Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Interest in meteorology. Knowledge in data management and skills in the use of statistical analysis tools (e.g. R programming software) preferred.

4 A4b A study on rainfall microphysical observations from a 2D video disdrometer Study raindrop size distribution, vertical velocity, rainfall intensity and other parameters outputted from the 2D video disdrometer taking reference of raingauge and radar observations for both convective and stratiform precipitation. Explore routine polarimetric radar calibration by microphysical observations from the disdrometer. Study the performance of various commonly used APIs in HKO for database operations. Design and develop/revise DB APIs and sample source codes with a view to i) improving performance and efficiency of HKO meteorological database operation; and ii) facilitating reuse of source codes. Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Interest in meteorology. Knowledge in data management and skills in the use of statistical analysis tools preferred. F5 Design and development of application programming interfaces (APIs) to improve the performance and efficiency of meteorological database (DB) operation Computer Science or related Interest in meteorology and programming. Knowledge in SQL and database operation. Skills in C, C++ and Java Programming. Having Experience of using JDBC, JDBC OCI, OCI and PL/SQL are preferable.

5 D2a Feasibility study on determination of earthquake intensity based on public's report on locally felt tremor Study the characteristics of public s reports on locally felt tremor; develop an algorithm to determine earthquake intensity with intelligence and develop relevant tool to generate an intensity map. Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Genuine interest in geophysics. Knowledge in statistics, data manipulation and skills in the use of statistical analysis tools and basic web programming. D2b Study on probabilistic approach for tropical cyclone storm surge risk assessment Develop an algorithm to generate hypothetical tropical cyclone tracks from official forecast using Monte Carlo method for storm surge prediction. Genuine interest in meteorology and weather forecasting. Knowledge in statistics, data manipulation and skills in the use of statistical analysis tools and basic web programming.

6 D4 Production of educational and promotional videos for HKO Assist in the production of educational and/or promotional videos for HKO, including screenwriting, filming and post-production. The videos may be broadcast on local TV channels (as part of Cool Met Stuff series), and/or uploaded to HKO social media platforms including YouTube and Facebook. Film and television, creative media, multimedia technology, or other related disciplines with an emphasis in digital video production. Completion of 2 nd or 3 rd year Strong knowledge in digital video production, and video editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro). Knowledge in animation production would be an advantage. Applicant must submit a portfolio of previous work (preferably with URL containing produced by them). The role involved in each of the video submitted should be specified.

7 R1 Design and implementation of equipment for taking video captures during upper-air weather observations To design and set up camera, telecommunication device, ground reception system, etc. for taking weather videos and reception of video signals at King s Park Meteorological Station during upper-air weather observations using meteorological balloon Electronic Engineering, Physics or related Completion of 1 st year Keen interest in building real-time data system. Knowledge and/or experience in telecommunication and antenna system preferred. R2a Development of an ebook on radiation basics and emergency response Process and present public education materials on radiation related knowledge in the form of an ebook for access on the Observatory s website and mobile platforms. Physics, Computer Strong background in interactive web page design. Skills in Photoshop and HTML5 would be an advantage. R2b Development of interactive game-based learning application on mobile devices Develop interactive educational game(s) for promotion of public education on meteorology related topics. Computer Science, Digital Creative Media or related Strong background in HTML5, Javascript and CSS. Knowledge and skills in game programming, AR, VR and graphics design would be an advantage.
