1 Charles Duke Curriculum Vita August 15, 2013 ======================================================================================== Physics Department 1333 Park St. Grinnell College Grinnell, IA Grinnell, IA, Education Ph.D. Iowa State University (1967) B.S. North Carolina State University (1962) Current Research Interests The study of high-energy gamma-rays incident on the earth's atmosphere from astrophysical sources through the Veritas Collaboration consumes most of my time. The Veritas Collaboration built and manages the four-telescope array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes located at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Southern Arizona. Operational since 2007, the primary emphasis of the collaboration's research efforts is the search for and study of celestial sources of gamma rays in the energy range 100 GeV to 30 TeV. Most of my current collaboration activities center on managing the GrISU Monte-Carlo simulation software for modeling the atmospheric cascades and the VERITAS telescopes and data acquisition hardware and on developing new analysis methods using machine learning techniques for incorporation into the eventdisplay and VEGAS analysis packages. I also developed simulation software for modeling the new planned CTA array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes.. Professional Experience NASA Fellowship ( ) AEC Postdoctoral Fellow, Iowa Sate University ( ) Guest Physicist, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark ( ) Participant in summer faculty programs at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (1970) and Ames Laboratory (1971 and 1972) Guest Professor, Mainz University, Mainz, Germany ( ) (Sabbatical Leave) Assistant, Associate Professor, Grinnell College ( ) Professor, Grinnell College (1979-present) Guest Professor, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia (January 1983-August 1983) (Sabbatical Leave) Dean of the Faculty, Grinnell College (July 1987-July 1992) Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Grinnell College (July ) Dean of the College, Grinnell College (July 1992-December 1997) Interim President of the College, Grinnell College (January 1998-July 1998) Visiting Professor, Physics Department, University College Dublin (August 1998-June 1999) Associate Member, Veritas Collaboration (high-energy gamma-ray research collaboration) (1998- present) Williston Professor of Physics (2000 May 2011) SFS Faculty Appointment, Grinnell College (2004 May 2011) Curator of Physics Museum ( present) Professor Emeritus of Physics (May 2011)
