4 The Moon Read the passage and answer the questions. Circle the letter beside the correct answer. The Moon The planet Earth has one moon. It is sometimes called a satellite because it orbits the Earth. The moon is 240,000 miles away from Earth. If a regular airplane could fly to the moon, it would take over two weeks to get there. A car traveling 124 miles per hour would take 80 days to get to the moon. A space shuttle only takes about four days. There is no air on the moon, and therefore there is no wind and no weather. The footprints made by astronauts will last forever, unless someone disturbs them. There is also no sound on the moon because there is no air to carry it. The temperature on the moon is extreme. It goes from very hot to very cold in one day. During the day, the sun warms the moon up to over 100 degrees Celsius. That is twice as hot as the hottest place on Earth, and hot enough to boil water. At night the temperature drops far below zero, down to -150 degrees Celsius. That is twice as cold as a winter in Antarctica. It might not be the best place to go for a vacation! 1. What is another name for the moon? A. planet B. satellite C. ball D. cheese 2. Why will the footprints of astronauts most likely stay on the moon forever? A. There is no sound. B. There is no light. C. There is no wind. D. There is no temperature. 3. How long would it take an airplane to get to the moon? A. four days B. 124 days C. 80 days D. over 14 days 4. This story is mainly about: A. the planet Earth B. what it is like on the moon C. traveling to the moon D. astronauts on the moon 22 Total Problems: Total Correct: Score:

6 The Leaning Tower of Pisa Read the passage and answer the questions. Circle the letter beside the correct answer. The Leaning Tower of Pisa The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most unusual monuments in the world. It is located in the town of Pisa, which is in northern Italy. The tower was built next to a cathedral and was designed to be a bell tower. In the belfry there are seven bells, each one corresponding to a musical note. The tower was designed to carry the sound of ringing bells for many miles. Construction of the tower began in the year 1173 by a man named Bonanno Pisano, and the tower immediately began to lean. When the tower s third story had been built, construction was halted because the tower started to sink into the ground. The tower remained unfinished for another 200 years. Finally, in the late 14th century, the tower was completed. It was 117 feet tall and had eight stories. The tower weighs approximately 14,500 tons. There is a spiral staircase inside the tower, which has 294 steps. Tourists are no longer allowed inside however, for fear that it may collapse. The tower continues to tilt more and more every year. The top of the tower is currently leaning more than 18 feet. Many tourists flock to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa every year in hopes of viewing it before it collapses. 1. What does the word belfry mean? A. frying pan B. bell tower C. chimes D. music 2. All of the following are true about the Leaning Tower of Pisa except: A. It is located in northern Italy. B. There is a spiral staircase inside of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. C. It is one hundred and seventeen feet tall. D. Tourists climb to the top every year to ring the bells. 3. Why did construction stop, leaving the Leaning Tower of Pisa unfinished for 200 years? A. The workers all decided to quit. B. The workers got tired. C. The building began to sink. D. They ran out of money. 4. According to the passage, who started construction of the tower? A. the Pope B. Bonanno Pisano C. Monsignor Pisa D. a monk at the cathedral 24 Total Problems: Total Correct: Score:

7 The Dreaded Report Card Read the passage and answer the questions. Circle the letter beside the correct answer. The Dreaded Report Card Robbie knew he was going to be in big trouble that night. It was the day report cards were sent home and he knew that he had some very poor grades. The worst part was that Robbie s teacher made sure parents saw the report cards. Each child s parents had to write the teacher a note saying that they received the report card. Robbie worried all day about what kind of punishment he was going to get. What could he do? The next day, Robbie went to school smiling and he was very cheerful. That is odd, thought Robbie s teacher. She immediately called him to her desk and asked him for the note from his parents. Robbie proudly handed her the note and went back to his seat. Mrs. Norris opened the note. It said, i red Robbie s report kard. I wil tawk too him abowt his bad graad in speling and reedng luvv, Robbie s mom Mrs. Norris folded up the note. She immediately went to call Robbie s mom. She knew that his parents had never seen his report card. 1. How did Mrs. Norris make sure the parents saw the report cards? A. She called the parents on the telephone. B. The parents had to sign the report card. C. The parents had to write her a note. D. She set up a conference with all of the parents. 2. Why did Robbie come to school smiling and cheerful the next day? A. He made the honor roll. B. His parents approved of his report card. C. He was happy he had good grades on his report card. D. He thought he got away with not showing his parents his report card. 3. How did Mrs. Norris know that Robbie s parents didn t see his report card? 4. In the space below, describe how your parents would react if you had a bad report card. Total Problems: Total Correct: Score: 25
