3 PRESENTATION The Ramon Maria Aller Astronomical Observatory (OARMA) is a unique Center within the University System of Galicia (SUG) not only because there are no other centers in our Community but also because the activities developed include high level scientific research and academic teaching as well as a wide range of diffusion activities. In addition, there is a meteorological center that, as the result of an agreement with the State Agency of Meteorology, has an ample collection of daily data and, without a doubt, possesses the most precise pluviometric records of the capital of Galicia to this day. The numerous activities carried out during the past decade by a small group of university professors, contracted researchers, and collaborators are presented in this Memory. The international prestige achieved in research is indicated by the 64 papers published in SCI journals during this period of time as well as the number of international conferences organized, the international agreements signed with foreign Observatories, the direction of doctoral dissertations, the management of the Catalog of Double Star Orbits, the edition of the Information Circular of Commission 26 of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), and that Galicia was the headquarters of the President of Commission 26 of the IAU for the first time, etc. All of the above is in perfect harmony with the high performance produced by using the magnificent teaching resources of the Center that were obtained with great effort via public calls as is the case of the RC 0.62 m. aperture telescope that is one of the largest in the Spanish university environment as well as the ICCD and the EMCCD speckle interferometry cameras that are unique in Spain. Various university departments have been incorporating the teaching of Astronomy during recent years and those students carry out their practice sessions in the Observatory with a high degree of quality. However, we must also remember the tremendous effort dedicated to diffusion with activities in the City of Culture of Galicia, in the Public Library Ánxel Casal, in multiple school centers all around Galicia via the Itinerant Astronomy program as well as an endless number of initiatives in the Observatory itself. The Observatory activities include: Science Week, the International Year of Astronomy, Astronomy for adults, collaboration programs with the Regional Government of Galicia (the Xunta of Galicia), the Cultural Extension Programs of Astronomy that are now in the 16th edition, the renovation of the emblematic Lalín Observatory, the edition of tri-lingual books, didactic videos, and many more activities that can be found in this publication. In today s environment in which everything seems to be getting worse, we find that productivity and excellence are constants in the work carried out in Centers such as OARMA of the USC, even in times of scarcity and precariousness. For that reason, in order to maintain today s level, the administrations must become involved in order to guarantee the existence of multifunction institutions such as ours that have a clear spirit of service to the society to which we are indebted. It is probable that we will successfully come out of the generalized pessimism only by supporting and energizing activities that work. At least, that is the thinking of those of us who work in this institution that was founded with great sacrifice by Father Aller more than 70 years ago. 3

19 6) ASTROMETRIC DETECTION OF AN EXOPLANET Using a new technique based on the usage of high resolution registers in the precise determination of orbits and also keeping in mind the different physical parameters of the stars, it was possible to detect a sinusoidal movement in component B of the triple star system, Gliese 22, which can be explained by the presence of a giant planet. The result of the research appeared in the journal of Astronomy & Astrophysics ( A methodology for studying physical and dynamical properties of multiple stars: application to the system of red dwarfs, Gl-22. A&A, 478, , 2008). The authors include J. A. Docobo, V. Tamazian, Y. Balega, M. Andrade, D. Schertl, G. Weigelt, P. P. Campo, and M. Palacios. Orbit of the open component of Gl 22 where the movement was observed. 7) ASTRONOMIC OBSERVATION CAMPAIGNS Apart from the observations conducted in the Santiago de Compostela installations and thanks to the research projects achieved, it was possible to observe using large telescopes situated in other parts of the Peninsula as well as in foreign locations. In this decade, diverse observation campaigns were carried out at the following locations: Centro Astronómico Hispano-Alemán of Calar Alto. A 3.5 m. telescope (binary speckle interferometry). Special Astrophysical Observatory, Russia. A 6 m. telescope (binary speckle interferometry). Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, Armenia. One 0.5 m. and one 2.6 m. telescope (photometry and spectroscopy). 19

64 Celebration of the IV Day of the Galician Scientist, dedicated to Ramón Maria Aller (2011) The Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC) dedicated this day in 2011 to Ramón María Aller Ulloa. The central event was celebrated on April 26 in the headquarters of the Academy, in the palace of San Roque in Compostela. During this session and after the presentation of the event by Professor Ernesto Vieitez Cortizo, President of the RACG, the nephew of Mr. Ramón, Victorino Gutierrez Aller, discussed the Personal, family, and human aspects of Don Ramón María Aller. Finally, Professor José Ángel Docobo Durántez presented the conference entitled: Ramón María Aller, a pioneer of astronomic research in Galicia. The Pedro Barrié da Maza Foundation, sponsor of the celebration, facilitated that 18 school groups, during the two following days, could visit the Santiago and Lalin Observatories in order to become familiar with not only those two centers but also to make contact with the history and the research that is carried out today. Previously, J. A. Docobo collaborated with the RAGC, the Barrié Foundation, and the Growcom Company, regarding the elaboration of abundant teaching material to be distributed among the visiting girls and boys. 65 Recuperation and renovation of the emblematic Lalin Astronomical Observatory After a conversation in 2008 between the Mayor of Lalin and Professor Docobo, the idea arose that perhaps the International Year of Astronomy was a good time to recuperate the old astronomic installations of Don Ramon, annexes of today s Museum in Lalín where, it can be said that Astronomic research began in Galicia. After signing a collaboration agreement between the City Council and USC via OARMA, that was directed by José Ángel Docobo with the participation of Pedro Pablo Campo Díaz, the necessary steps were taken to achieve that end: work including the updating of the installations, the design of a new dome, and the acquisition of the telescope. The Planewave telescope (0.51m. aperture) inside of an automated dome that regulates rotation as well as aperture was installed in July, We wanted to maintain the extraordinarily well-preserved original Wood, which adds quality. In line with our indications, the external part of the dome was fabricated in Arteixo in the workshop of the company, FIBERGLAS. The telescope that is a product of American and Italian construction, was imported by MICROCIENCIA of Barcelona. The inaugural event followed by various astronomic test sessions occurred on March 26, In attendance were the Counselor of Education of the Regional Government of Galicia, Mr. Xesús Vázquez Abad and the USC Rector, Professor Juan Casares Long, in addition to the following local authorities: the Mayor of Lalín, Mr. Xosé Crespo Iglesias, and the Town Councilwoman of Culture, Mrs. Nuria Rodríguez. They spoke in the following order. First, the Town Councilwoman of Culture who presented the event, the Mayor, the Counselor and the USC Rector. Two presentations followed. First, Román Rodríguez González, Professor of Geography at USC as well as Town Councilman of Lalín and regional representative, who spoke about The Observatory: the changing memory of Lalin and finally, José Ángel Docobo who spoke about: The Observatory of Lalin, cradle of Galician Astronomy, 100 years later. After the presentation of a plaque (that was accompanied by the Galician hymn) he explained the details of the telescope as well as the dome, emphasizing the internal renovation. OARMA also prepared a collection of 10 instructional panels in order to create the ambience of the new installations as well as the edition of a flyer for the inaugural session. These activities were carried out by José Ángel Docobo and José Ramón Gónzalez-Romay. 65
