We use the double lrge seve to estblsh non-trvl bounds.. Introducton nd Sttements of the Results The lrge seve ws n de orgnted by Yu. V. Lnn [] n 94. He lso mde pplcton to dstrbutons of qudrtc non-resdues. Snce then, the de hs been refned nd perfected by mny. We denote x = mn Z x for x R. A set of rel numbers {x } s sd to be δ-spced modulo f x j x > δ, for ny j. The lrge seve nequlty, whch we henceforth refer to s the clsscl lrge seve nequlty, s stted s follows. Dfferent elegnt proofs of the theorem cn be found n [, 3, 6, 8, 4]. The theorem, n the followng form, ws frst ntroduced by Dvenport nd Hlberstm, [7]. Theorem. Let { n } be n rbtrry sequence of complex numbers, {x } be rel numbers tht re δ-spced modulo, nd M, N be ntegers wth N > 0, then we hve.) n e x n) δ + N ) Z, where the mpled constnt s bsolute nd henceforth we set Z = Sve for the computton of the mpled constnt, the bove nequlty s the best possble. The bove theorem my be extended to the cse β α R by pproxmtng β α the proof wors lmost exctly the sme. More precsely, we hve wth rtonl number nd Proposton. The result of Theorem stll holds f the condton β α Q s replced by β α exsts Q wth gcd, b) = nd b β α b < 4bN.. 3 LARGE SIEVE INEQUALITIES WITH QUADRATIC AMPLITUDES 3 For completeness, s we shll menton the followng lemm lter on, we gve. Lemm Sobolev-Gllgher). Let fx) : [, b] C be smooth functon wth contnuous frst dervtve on, b). Then gven u [, b], we hve fu) b b ) fx) dx + f x) dx, nd + b b f b fx) dx + b f x) dx. b Proof. Ths s quoted from [] nd of course from [8]. We shll me extensve use of the followng lemm, dubbed double lrge seve. Lemm 3 double lrge seve). Suppose x ),, x M) nd y ),, y N) re rel vectors n dmensons wth X xm) X, Y ym) Y, for =,,, m =,, M, n =,, N. Ths s Lemm from [0] nd hs ts orgn n Lemm.4 n [5]. 3. Heurstcs nd Trvl Bounds We re nterested n estmtng the sze of the followng expresson. K n e [x fx)]. N b n b r Λ = y n) y r) By the vrtue of the dulty prncple, Lemm, t s equvlent to estmte for the followng sum. K c e x fn)), where {c } s n rbtrry sequence of complex numbers. Therefore, f fn) = n, then the vrtue of the clsscl lrge seve nequlty, n ts dul form, gves tht K 3.) c e x n ) K δ + M + N) ) c, where the N n the 3.) comes from chngng the vrbles nd then fllng n ll the non-squres n s. Consequently, we hve the correspondng result. K n ex n ) δ + M + N) )Z. In the lght of how we rrved t 3.), one my tend to thn tht we should hve the sme estmte tht the regulr lrge seve nequlty hs. Nmely, the upper bound should be, essentlly, 3.) δ + N)Z. ǫ ).
4 LIANGYI ZHAO However, the bound n 3.) s not to be. Let {x } be the Frey sequence of order Q. Therefore, δ = Q n ths cse. Moreover, te Q = p be prme squre nd n be p f n s multple of p nd zero otherwse. Also te M = 0 nd N postve multple of p. Therefore, we hve 3.3) Q q= mod q gcd,q)= n e q n ) mod Q=p gcd,q)= pn p QN. where we mnorze the sum over q by the sngle term correspondng to q = Q = p. But on the other hnd, 3.4) δ + N)Z Q + N) N p p = Q 5 + Q N. Now f we te N = Q, then we hve the lower bound of Q 3 n 3.3) but n upper bound of only OQ 5/ ) n 3.4). Thus we hve contrdcton nd the result n 3.) s not ttnble n generl. Furthermore, f one consder the generl cse of fn) = αn + βn + γ, qudrtc polynoml wth rel coeffcents, one could mmc Gllgher s proof of the regulr lrge seve nequlty n [8]. More precsely, we pply the Sobolev-Gllgher s Lemm, Lemm, to ) n e xfn)) on the ntervls [x δ, x + δ] nd then sum over the x s. We then get n upper bound for the sum of our nterest, δ n e[xfn)] dx + π n e[xfn)] n fn)e[xfn)] dx. 0 0 Applyng Prsevl s dentty to the frst ntegrl, we nfer tht t s Z. By the vrtues of Hölder s nequlty to the second ntegrl nd then Prsevl s nequlty, we see tht the second ntegrl s mjorzed by ) n e[xfn)] dx n fn). 0 Applyng Prsevl s dentty gn to the frst fctor, we get tht bove s bounded by Theorem s better thn the bove f Q N. [δ + α M + N) ]Z. 4. Proof of Results We need the followng lemm concernng the dfference of the dfference of qudrtc polynomls. Lemm 4. Let S = [M +, M + N] Z, α > 0, nd ǫ > 0 be gven. Set gx, y) = x y)x + y + b ), wth, b Z, b > 0 nd gcd, b) =. Let T denote the number of prs of m, n S wth gm, n ) 0 nd 4.) gm, n) gm, n ) α. Then we hve ) b 4.) T α + [Nb M + N) + + b/α] ǫ, where the mpled constnt depends only on ǫ.
LARGE SIEVE INEQUALITIES WITH QUADRATIC AMPLITUDES 5 Proof. Frst we note tht 4.) holds f nd only f 4.3) m n)bm + bn + ) m n )bm + bn + ) b α. The expresson nsde the bsolute vlue sgn n 4.3) s tht of the dfference between two ntegers. For fxed m, n S, there re t most b/α + ntegers tht re no more thn b/α) wy from gm, n). If 0 s one of such ntegers nd = uv wth u, v Z, then t s esly observed tht gm, n ) = wth some m, n S only f b dvdes both bu + v nd bu + v n whch cse m = bu + v, nd n = bu + v. b b Therefore, the number of pr m nd n wth gm, n ) = does not exceed τ ) ǫ Nb M + N + ) + b/α) ǫ, where τ ) denotes the number of dvsors of. We hve lredy noted tht the number of such s s t most b/α +. Hence we hve our desred result. Now we re redy to prove Theorem. Proof. of Theorem ) It s certnly elementry to wrte fx) = α x + β ) + β α 4α + γ nd hence t suffces to consder the sum x x FQ) s=m+ c s e [ αx s + β ) ] α wth β/α = /b, b > 0, gcd, b) = nd n rbtrry complex sequence {c s }. Usng the nottons of Lemm 3, we te =, x = αx, y = gs, t), X = α, Y = M N + N, m =, for ll m; b n = c s c t, ǫ = α, δ = M N + N ) + α. Recll tht gs, t) s s defned n Lemm 4. Wth these nottons, we hve Aδ) = [ 4 M N + N + α ] Λ αx x ) = Q + [ 4 M N + N + α ] Λ αx x ). x x x x A summnd n the bove double sum s non-zero f nd only f 4.4) x x < α4 M N + N ) + Snce x nd x re Frey frctons wth denomntor not exceedng Q, for ech fxed x, the number of x stsfyng 4.4) s mjorzed s Q α M + N) + +. We therefore hve Aα) Q Q 4 + αn M + N) +. It stll remns to estmte Bǫ). We hve Bǫ) = c s c t c s c t Λαgs, t) gs, t )) s,t = c s c t c s c t Λαgs, t)) + 4.5) c s c t c s c t Λαgs, t) gs, t )) s,t gs,t )=0 s,t gs,t ) 0,
6 LIANGYI ZHAO Note tht for fxed s, the number of t s wth gs, t) = 0 s O). Hence the frst term n 4.5) s ) ) ) c s c s c t Λαgs, t)) c s c s + c s c t, s s s 0< g) <α) by the vrtue of the prllelogrm rule. As noted n Lemm 4, 0 < gs, t) < α) holds f nd only f 4.6) 0 < s t)bs + bt + ) < b α. For fxed Z wth 0 < < b/α) nd s Z fxed, the number of t s wth t Z nd s t)bs + bt + ) = s t most τ ) by the sme rguments n the proof of Lemm 4. Hence wth s fxed, the number of t s stsfyng 4.6) s, for ny gven η > 0, ) η ) ) +η b b b α α + α +, wth the mpled constnt dependng only on η. Hence, the frst term n 4.5) s estmted s ) ) ) +η b c s c s + α + ) ) +η b c s α + c s. s s s s We now use Lemm 4 for the second term n 4.5). The summnds of nterest s zero unless 4.7) gs, t) gs, t ) < α. For fxed s nd t, the number of prs s nd t stsfyng 4.7) s ) b α + Nb M + N) + + b ) η. α Ths gves tht the second term n 4.5) s ) b α + Nb M + N) + + b ) η ) b c s c t = α α + Nb M + N) + + b ) ) η c s, α s where the mpled constnt depends only on η. Now combnng everythng nd tng the squre root, we hve the desred result. We prove the proposton next. Proof. of the Proposton ) The proof goes precsely the sme s tht of Theorem. 4.6) becomes 0 < s t)bs + bt + ) + s t)bz < b, where z < α 4bN nd hence s t)bz < 4. Hence t suffces to estmte the number of pr s, t such tht Smlrly, 4.3) becomes 0 < s t)bs + bt + ) < b α + 4. m n)bm + bn + ) m n )bm + bn + ) + m n)bz m n )bz b, nd t suffces to estmte number of prs m nd n such tht m n)bm + bn + ) m n )bm + bn + ) b +.
LARGE SIEVE INEQUALITIES WITH QUADRATIC AMPLITUDES 7 Now the rguments go precsely the sme s those n the proofs of Theorem nd Lemm 4 nd we rrve t the sme results. 5. Notes Wth the counter exmple gven n Secton 3, the uthor suspect the the result wth = Q + QN s essentlly the best possble. The uthor lso beleves tht the method used n the chpter my be used to del wth lrge seve nequlty of hgher power mpltudes. Furthermore, we hve been restrctng our ttenton only to Frey frcton. However, the result of double lrge seve should enble us to consder ny set of well-spced rel numbers. Fnlly, we note tht the result of ths pper n the cse when β/α s rrtonl hs been mproved recently by S. Ber []. The stuton wth hgher power mpltudes s lso studed n the sme pper. Acnowledgments The uthor wshes to thn hs thess dvser, Professor Henry Iwnec, who suggested ths problem to me nd, of hs support nd dvce, hs been most generous.
