Prove that if A is invertible, then at least n of the matrices M ij are invertible. [Hint: Consider the adjoint matrix adj(a).] Show your working below. Assume that at most n 1 of the submatrices M ij are invertible. Then the cofactor A ij = ( 1) i+j det(m ij ) = 0 for all but at most n 1 pairs of (i, j). So adj(a) = (A ji ) would have at most n 1 nonzero entries. In particular, adj(a) would have a zero row; so adj(a) would be singular. On the other hand, if A is invertible, then adj(a) is invertible.
