3 Welcome to the 2008 Journals Catalogue IOP Publishing is a leading scientific publisher specializing in physics and related subjects. We are an integral part of the Institute of Physics, an international learned society and professional body, whose mission is to promote the advancement and dissemination of physics worldwide. Introducing IOPscience... All IOP Journal content back to 1874, delivered through an innovative new platform, and available by electronic-only licence. IOPscience has been developed with the research needs of the scientific community and the space and archiving concerns of librarians in mind. IOPscience embraces some of the most innovative emerging technologies available in order to enhance the user s experience. All content has been organized into more than 6000 subject classifications, making each and every article highly discoverable. You can interact with these subject classifications in a variety of ways on the site. For every article in which you have an interest, you will be able to find other articles in the same subject area. By using IOPscience s exclusive personalization features, your homepage is now your homepage. This is because the subject information you provide when you register is used to show the latest articles in your field. IOPscience also contains the following key features: RSS feeds may be programmed for a specific search area to keep you up-to-date with new content as it is added. Emerging technologies such as tag clouds have been incorporated to display content. Social bookmarking is now available from article abstract pages to services like Connotea.org and del.icio.us. Thousands of scientists and librarians have been contacted and their feedback has played an integral role in designing the service and will continue to do so. The IOPscience platform will be undergoing improvements all the time. We welcome any suggestions, thoughts or ideas you may have for its continual development. To begin your experience, simply visit iopscience.iop.org. IOPscience is available as an electronic-only licence to view IOP content. Our Electronic Journals service, as well as our current subscription models, will continue to be available separately to our customers. We want to give all customers cost-effective access to IOP hosted content at a fair price. The IOPscience pricing model is based on a number of factors including the size of relevant research at your institution, and your geographic location. If you would like to trial IOPscience, or you want to find out more information, please contact your Regional Representative. Visit for a list of representatives. 4 News Latest news and developments from IOP Publishing New for 2008 The Astronomical Journal The Astronomical Journal, one of the world s finest journals in the field of astronomy, will be available to IOP customers from Please see page 10 for more details. Chinese Journal of Chemical Physics Now available from IOP on behalf of the Chinese Physical Society, Chinese Journal of Chemical Physics (CJCP) is focused on interdisciplinary research with a strong chemistry and physics foundation. CJCP is free online during 2007 and will be available by subscription and included in Package Z in See page 11 for more information. Communications in Theoretical Physics Published monthly, Communications in Theoretical Physics (CTP), is a major journal reporting the latest developments and important achievements in various branches of theoretical physics. CTP content will be free online during For more information on CTP, please see page 13. Journal of Breath Research A forum for the presentation and evaluation of different analytical techniques used in breath analysis for medical diagnosis and monitoring. Freely accessible online in 2007 and available by subscription and in Package Z and D+ in Changes in journal sizes for 2008 We have reviewed the current size of all our printed journals, and will be making the following changes, which will come into effect from January 2008: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter and Reports on Progress in Physics will move from approximate B5 (176 x 250 mm) single-column format, to approximate US Letter size (210 x 286 mm) double-column format. It is hoped that this will help to save paper for readers printing articles from the online journal. Most scientists interact with journals online and print out articles to study on A4 or letter paper. Printed copies remain important when bandwidth is low, for archiving and for special issues, so the new larger format will reduce paper consumption by 30% as well as modernizing the journals, said Jan Michael Rost, of Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, at Max-Planck-Institut für Physik komplexer Systeme, Dresden, Germany. All other B5 journals will remain the same. All current A4 journals (210 x 297 mm) will also be revised to the new 210 x 286 mm format. The new sizes will come into effect with the first issue of the 2008 volumes. We are optimistic that these changes will reduce paper consumption and make these journals easier to use. We hope that you will be able to accommodate the new sizes into your 2008 collections. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at production@iop.org. New packages for 2008 With even more high quality research journals to choose from, we are delighted to be able to offer two new and unique packages in Package D+ contains eight journals covering medical and biological science and includes a brand new edition to the IOP journals collection, Journal of Breath Research. New article numbering system for IOP journals From 2008, IOP journals will move from sequential page numbering to an article numbering system, offering important advantages and flexibility by speeding up the publication process. Papers in different issues or sections can be published online as soon as they are ready, without having to wait for a whole issue or section to be allocated page numbers. Journals which have so far introduced these changes are Environmental Research Letters, Journal of Breath Research, Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, Journal of Physics: Conference Series and Nanotechnology. Other journals in the IOP portfolio will make the transition to article numbering in 2008, with the exception of The Astronomical Journal, European Journal of Physics, Journal of Geophysics and Engineering, Journal of Radiological Protection, Metrologia, Nonlinearity, Physica Scripta, Physics Education, Physics in Medicine and Biology and Physiological Measurement. Turpion and Chinese partner journals are also excluded. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at production@iop.org. Institutional Membership Fee During 2007, Journal of High Energy Physics and Journal of Instrumentation introduced an annual institutional membership fee. The scheme entitles any institution paying the fee to have articles from their institution published open access and made available to a global audience. The fee will also entitle members to full-text access to all of the journal s content regardless of the status of the paper and not just to those articles that are available as part of the institutional membership scheme. The institutional membership fee scales according to the number of papers published from that institution in the previous year. The fee for your institute is available on application. The institutional membership scheme provides an alternative for customers who can of course continue to subscribe to the journal via the normal methods. Please custserv@iop.org for further information. 04 IOP Publishing Journals 2008
