When I first arrived in Argentina I was told that the best way to get to know Argentine culture was to spend a day in a market 1 the atmosphere and 2 through the various stalls. Just 3 from the main square, San Telmo market gave me my first introduction into South American market life. It was 4 tourists and I remember saying to my friend where are all the local people? Lots of the products were 5 but after a while each stall looked like the last one and any hope of finding a 6 seemed unlikely. The aim is to help with awareness and to improve your listening skills. Sort of/kind of is used in an informal way to say in some way or some degree. Like is used as a conjunction or even just to replace umm and ah. There s not many tourists. An example of a grammatically incorrect English sentence often used in spoken English. The misuse of the singular form (there s) instead of the plural (there are). The adjective different replaces an adverb something that is a common speaking pattern particularly in the USA. Other common examples include that s real good and she did good replacing that s really good and she did well Section 8 Extra vocabulary booster from the podcast (suffix) ish is used as at the end of a word to say about/quite/partly. We often use it with colours/times/ages. (noun) someone from London. (noun) someone from East London. (noun) a situation or someone s feelings which change from one extreme to another. 19 Transcript Part I m standing just a stone s throw away from the skyscrapers of London s financial district but it feels like a million miles away. In my humble opinion London does two things better than any other city. It has some of the best markets in the world and it has some incredible parks and green spaces. I m in East London to uncover a gem that combines the two together. Welcome to Columbia Road Market. Part It s Sunday morning and I m here in Columbia Road Market, East London to browse through one of London s best kept secrets. First established in the 1800s as a Saturday market it was soon switched to Sundays to incorporate the large wave of Jewish immigration into the area and it s been held on Sundays ever since. It s been a rollercoaster ride but since the 1980s the market has flourished, becoming popular with in the know Londoners and the occasional clued up tourist. Looking down Columbia Road I can see and explosion of colour and greenery. The street is packed with stalls selling fresh flowers as well as herbs and exotic plants. This truly is an oasis of foliage and flowers in the heart of the East End. Now I had intended to just come down here and soak up the atmosphere but now I m here and I ve seen what s on offer I think I might be going home with something 19 P a g e d i s c o v e r C o l u m b i a r o a d f l o w e r m a r k e t

for the garden. It s times like this that I wish you could not only hear the sounds of the market but smell the smells too, the sweet scent of fresh flowers is glorious. This surely is the best smelling street in London! Part Tom Ok, I ve been joined by my mate Carolina who is a local to the area. Carolina why do you like this market? Carolina I think it s very lively and it s full of flowers and people from all over the world, probably. And then you can basically find anywhere to have something to drink or to eat, there s music on the corners. It s just really nice to be around here. T Yeah, it s got a really nice character to it hasn t it? C It s, I think it s a very interesting place because it s everything condensed in a very small area so you feel like you probably are somewhere else maybe like in the countryside but you re not and there are definitely some really particular things about East London that you can find like architecture. T And would you get this kind of market back home in Mexico? C I think our markets are a little bit different. Maybe our markets are more like more functional in terms of just getting provisions for houses or businesses whereas here it s a little bit more just to enjoy yourself. T And how often do you come down to the market? 20 P a g e d i s c o v e r C o l u m b i a r o a d f l o w e r m a r k e t

C Well, I live just around the corner so I basically bring everyone I know who hasn t been here like you guys and I don t know, maybe every two weeks. T Yeah? And what was the last thing you bought here? C Ahhh coffee. Yeah I don t have enough space like for the sorts of plants I would like to get. So far it s just been food. T What do you like most about the market? C Urm, probably the colours of everything you can see around here. Going from the flowers to like, the people, who dresses slightly different compared to other parts of London, so it s very enjoyable. T You don t sort of stumble upon it, I don t know, like it s a sort of, for local people. There s not many tourists here are there. It s kind of for people who live in the area, they come down here. Is that right? C Yeah, it feels like for Londoners or Eastenders. Part Tom I m with Bill, one of the stall owners. What is your routine on market day? Bill Erm, well we get here about 7 o clock, unload the lorry, get a cup of tea, start unloading and just generally wait for the customers to start rolling up about 8 o clock. It starts about 8, I suppose. T And what time do you finish? 21 P a g e d i s c o v e r C o l u m b i a r o a d f l o w e r m a r k e t

B Well we start packing up about 3 o clockish. T Am I right in saying a lot of the stalls here are family run businesses and sort of second generation. B Yeah, I ve got a lot of my family down here. Brothers and cousins: next door and opposite me and over there. Yeah, a lot of family down here. T Is it basically, is it a lot about the community of the area? B Yeah, it s just coming up all, (we ve) been coming up all our lives, like our dads have and just before the war they started so it s carried on really, you know. Yeah it s good, it s a good atmosphere. T Yeah Tom ESD Ok, I m with Tom who is the owner of Milagros, a sort of Mexican boutique shop. Tom, could you talk us through your shop. Tom Shop owner It s handmade artefacts from all over Mexico. Handmade mouth-blown glassware, baskets, tiles and wilder one off artefacts. Tom ESD Ok and how long have you been here for? Tom shop owner 20 years, well, I ve been doing this for 20 years. We ve been here in Columbia Road for more like a dozen years. Tom ESD And how has the market changed over the last few years? Tom shop owner It s become more galleries and less shops. So it s been heavily gentrified. Tom ESD Right. 22 P a g e d i s c o v e r C o l u m b i a r o a d f l o w e r m a r k e t

Tom shop owner But certainly a more affluent bunch of people come down now than maybe a few years ago. It was primarily a flower market and now it s a shopping destination. Tom ESD And what makes it so special, why do people come here? Tom shop owner Because of, the flower market is what makes it special in the first place. It s the only large outdoor retail flower market in Europe as far as I know. Hopefully it ll continue. I mean it s bound to have to evolve. Our fear is that it becomes big enough to let main street shops make sense of the street like Starbucks. At the moment it s all independents here. There s something like 60 independent shops besides the market traders here. Part As you can probably hear the market is now closing. Once again it s been a pleasure discovering another unique slice of London life with you. If you want to visit the Market it s open on Sundays from 8am until the afternoon. Remember there s a worksheet to go with this podcast that is full of key vocabulary, practice exercises and a full transcript. I m Tom Rees, until next time take care. 23 P a g e d i s c o v e r C o l u m b i a r o a d f l o w e r m a r k e t
