Motivation The coputation of oents of the nucleon structure functions is a fascinating challenge: it is known to be difficult, but it is a point where lattice results could contribute uch to the understanding and interpretation of phenoenological data fro Deep Inelastic Scattering The continuu forulation of hadron structure functions is plagued by renoralon abiguities, ie power-like IR contributions, see eg Refs [] Here we refer to the lattice regularisation, where a general oent of the nucleon structure function can be expanded as M(q 2 ) = c (2) (aq)a 2 (a)+c (4) (aq) q 2 A 4(a)+ { higher twists } () It depends on the transfer oentu q, while a is the lattice spacing, c (2), c (4) are Wilson coefficients (where the superscript is the twist), and A 2, A 4 are reduced atrix eleents ( reduced in the sense that the Lorentz structure is factored out) For the evaluation of A 2 there is an established procedure, which eploys the ratio between two-point and three-point correlation functions [2] On the other hand, the Wilson coefficients have usually been evaluated in continuu perturbation theory However, we need a cancellation of singularities in the ters c (2), A 4 /a 2, which are again a facet of the renoralon proble This requires a strictly consistent treatent [3] Therefore we evaluate the Wilson coefficients non-perturbatively as well This ethod is particularly suitable for disentangling higher twist contributions The use of overlap quarks suppresses undesired operator ixings In this report we present new nuerical results for c (2) For earlier results with Wilson ferions we refer to Ref [4] In a previous study with overlap quarks on a lattice [5] soe probles persisted, which otivated us to enlarge the lattice to the size Operator Product Expansion on the lattice To be explicit, we apply the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) to a product of electroagnetic currents J µ between quark states ψ(p), W µν (p,q) = ψ(p) J µ (q)j ν (q) ψ(p) = C () µν,i,µ µ n (q) ψ(p) O () i,µ µ n ψ(p) (2) The lower line is a decoposition in ters of local operators O (), which characterise the nucleon structure The index i = 6 specifies the Dirac structure, µ µ n indicate the oentu coponents involved, and distinguishes operators with the sae syetry Note that the corresponding Wilson coefficients C () depend solely on the transfer oentu q A truncation of this expansion at soe low operator diension requires the following scale separation, ( π ) 2 p 2 q 2 (22) a So far we have been using periodic boundary conditions for the gauge field Thus a sizable lattice is required to have a set of sall oenta p 2 available If this scale separation is realised, it justifies 2
a truncation of the OPE (2), which cuts off operators with high derivatives, ie high powers of p Here we consider quark bilinears with up to 3 derivatives, ψ Γ i ψ, ψ Γ i D µ ψ, ψ Γ i D µ D µ2 ψ, ψ Γ i D µ D µ2 D µ3 ψ, (23) where Γ i runs over a basis of the Clifford algebra This still aounts to an apparently frightening set of 6 3 d= 4d = 36 operators However, we choose the isotropic transfer oenta q a = π 4a (,,,) ( q a 4 GeV), q b = π 3a (,,,) ( q b 55 GeV) (24) In this case the syetry reduces the set of operators to only 67 equivalence classes [5] We denote the as C C 67, which refer to an ascending nuber of derivatives: C : no derivative, vanishes in the chiral liit, ultiplies ψ ψ C 2 C 6 : one derivative, bjorken scaling /q 2 C 7 C 6 : two derivatives, vanish in the chiral liit C 7 C 67 : three derivatives, Bjorken scaling /(q 2 ) 2 The coefficients of ters with an even nuber of derivatives vanish at quark ass = due to chiral syetry In the Bjorken liit of large q 2 the coefficients of ters with one (three) derivative(s) are expected to scale as C /q 2 (C /(q 2 ) 2 ) To separate the scales even better, we have now ipleented twisted boundary conditions: thus very sall p 2 becoe accessible, which enables us to use q 2 further below the oentu cutoff squared [6] This allows us to consider for instance q = π 6a (,,,) 3 Results for the Wilson coefficients In our nuerical study we analysed configurations that were generated in the quenched approxiation with the Lüscher-Weisz gauge action in a volue V = , with a physical lattice spacing a 75 f To provide finite OPE atrix eleents, as they occur in eq (2), we fixed the lattice Landau gauge; this is also favourable to reduce the statistical noise For the valence quarks we used overlap ferions with the paraeter ρ = 4 (negative ass of the Wilson kernel) at a bare quark ass of 28 in lattice units, which corresponds to about 73 MeV The application of chiral lattice ferions suppresses undesired operator ixings, as well as O(a) lattice artifacts We denote the nuber of p-sources as M, and the nuber of Wilson coefficients to be considered as C C N, with N = 67 in our case So far we evaluated W µν off-shell for M = 25 p-oentu sources at transfer oentu q a (on different configurations), and for M = p- oentu sources at q b In each case this yields a syste constraining the Wilson coefficients, W (p ) = W (p M) O (p ) O (p ) N O (p M) O (p M) N C C N (3) 3
where the eleents W (p i) and O (p i) k are 4 4 atrices W 33 W 44 cobined fits q a = (π / 4 a) (,,,) residue n W 33 W 44 cobined fits q b = (π / 3 a) (,,,) residue e-4 e n Figure : The convergence of the Wilson coefficients as the nuber of the n ost powerful constraints is increased We show the residues as a function of n for the transfer oentu q a with 25 p-sources (upper plot), and for q b with p-sources (lower plot) In both cases we see a convincing convergence before n reaches the deterinistic nuber 67, which confirs that the extracted Wilson coefficients are trustworthy In both cases the syste is over-deterined since 6M > N We apply Singular Value Decoposition as an established ethod to analyse such systes [7] Roughly speaking, this ethods selects the n N conditions with the axial ipact on the solution C,,C N A rapid convergence for increasing n approves a reliable result (ie the reaining conditions are negligible) With 2 singular values (analogues of eigenvalues in rectangular atrices [7]) we do observe this feature As an exaple Figure shows the convergence in n for the Wilson coefficients under consideration, which saturates around n 5 for q a and for q b In the latter case, the total nuber of 4
constraints is lower, hence it is easier to satisfy the to a good precision Therefore the residues are saller, but the result is less reliable Note also that q 2 a = 4 (π/a)2 is ore proising than q 2 b = 4 9 (π/a)2 in view of the required scale separation (22) 3 fit for W 33 and W 44 tree level 2 C q a = (π / 4 a) (,,,) fit for W 33 and W 44 tree level C - q b = (π / 3 a) (,,,) Figure 2: The Wilson coefficients evaluated at oentu transfer q a (upper plot) and q b (lower plot) The results are copared to the corresponding tree level values (with the sae overlap Dirac operator) We observe the sae pattern, but a significant non-perturbative correction In the chiral liit C and C 7 C 6 vanish The sall values that we obtain (with light quarks) for these coefficients provide a consistent picture The residue is the nor of the difference between the two sides of eq (3) in the given approxiation 5
There are a nuber of discrete rotations and reflections which leave our isotropic q-oenta (24) invariant For exaple this allows us to exchange W 33 with W 44 As a consequence, specific pairs of Wilson coefficients belonging to different operators have to coincide; for instance the coefficient of O i,33 in W 33 is equal to the coefficient of O i,44 in W 44 We ipleented this property in cobined fits, which have of course soewhat larger residues, see Figure We now proceed to the actual results for the Wilson coefficients obtained fro W 33 and W 44 The best results eerge fro cobined fits They are shown in Figure 2, which also displays the corresponding tree level values for coparison In the liit of zero quark ass the coefficients C and C 7 C 6 vanish due to chiral syetry, as we anticipated in Section 2 Since we are dealing with light quarks represented by chiral lattice ferions, we are fairly close to chirality Therefore it is a stringent consistency test that we do obtain particularly sall values for these coefficients That property had not been observed with Wilson ferions [4] Finally we also test the Bjorken scaling property, which we entioned in Section 2 We show again the C obtained at q a We copare the to the Wilson coefficients evaluated at q b, where C 2 C 6 are enhanced with a factor q 2 b /q2 a = 6/9, and C 7 C 67 are aplified with the square of this factor The Bjorken re-scaled results are confronted in Figure 3, and we see an ipressive siilarity, in particular for cases with relatively large C 3 2 q a : fit for W 33 and W 44 q b : with Bjorken re-scaling C derivative 3 derivatives Figure 3: The Wilson coefficients evaluated at oentu transfer q a and q b, where in the latter case the coefficients of ters with one or three derivatives are aplified according to the expected scaling in the Bjorken liit In fact the C are now in the sae range, and we observe a very satisfactory level of agreeent 6
4 Conclusions and outlook Our ethod to evaluate the Wilson coefficients non-perturbatively works successfully We arrived at conclusive non-perturbative results for a considerable set of Wilson coefficients We are continuing to evaluate constraints for additional q and p oenta to further tighten the control over possible artifacts The use of twisted boundary conditions enables us now to achieve an even better scale separation In a final step, the nucleon structure function M is obtained by Nachtann integration [8] over W µν For instance, for the second oent this integral takes the for M 2 (q) = 3q2 (4π) 2 dx dω q n µ [ W µν (q) 4 δ µνw ρρ ]n ν [ F 2 (x,q 2 )+ ] 6 F L(x,q 2 ), (4) where the Bjorken liit is taken in the lower line The projection vector has length n 2 = For a different projection one obtains dx[f F L] instead Thus the cobination of different projections deterines the longitudinal structure function F L = F 2 2xF With copleted data, we will obtain a fully non-perturbative and consistent evaluation of the Nucleon Structure Functions [6] Acknowledgeent : The coputations were perfored on the clusters of the Norddeutscher Verbund für Hoch- und Höchstleistungsrechnen (HLRN) We thank Hinnerk Stüben for technical assistance References [] AI Vainshtein and VI Zakharov, Phys Rev Lett 73 (994) 27 (Erratu ibid 75 (995) 3588) E Stein, M Maul, L Mankiewicz and A Schäfer, Nucl Phys B 536 (998) 38 VM Braun, E Gardi and S Gottwald, Nucl Phys B 685 (24) 7 [2] M Göckeler, R Horsley, D Pleiter, PEL Rakow and G Schierholz, Phys Rev D 7 (25) 45 [3] G Martinelli and CT Sachrajda, Nucl Phys B 478 (996) 66 [4] S Capitani, M Göckeler, R Horsley, H Oelrich, D Petters, PEL Rakow and G Schierholz, Nucl Phys (Proc Suppl) 73 (999) 288 D Petters, PhD Thesis, Freie Universität Berlin (2) M Göckeler, R Horsley, H Perlt, PEL Rakow, G Schierholz and A Schiller (QCDSF Collaboration) PoS(LAT26)9 [5], N Cundy, M Göckeler, R Horsley, H Perlt, D Pleiter, PEL Rakow, CJ Roberts, G Schierholz, A Schiller and JM Zanotti (QCDSF Collaboration), PoS(LAT27)59 [6] QCDSF Collaboration, in preparation [7] WH Press, SA Teukolsky, WT Vetterling and BP Flannery, Nuerical Recipes, Cabridge University Press, Cabridge UK (989) [8] O Nachtann, Nucl Phys B 63 (973) 273 7
