1 Convergence Properties & Extension to Non-Conservative Multidiensional ystes Haran Jackson Cavendish Laboratory, JJ Thoson Ave, Cabridge, UK, CB3 0HE arxiv: v [physics.cop-ph] 20 Oct 207 Abstract Hyperbolic systes of PDEs can be solved to arbitrary orders of accuracy by using the ADER Finite Volue ethod. These PDE systes ay be non-conservative and non-hoogeneous, and contain stiff source ters. ADER-FV reuires a spatio-teporal polynoial reconstruction of the data in each spacetie cell, at each tie step. This reconstruction is obtained as the root of a nonlinear syste, resulting fro the use of a Galerkin ethod. It was proved in Jackson [7] that for traditional choices of basis polynoials, the eigenvalues of certain atrices appearing in these nonlinear systes are always 0, regardless of the nuber of spatial diensions of the PDEs or the chosen order of accuracy of the ADER-FV ethod. This guarantees fast convergence to the Galerkin root for certain classes of PDEs. In Montecinos and Balsara [9] a new, ore efficient class of basis polynoials for the one-diensional ADER-FV ethod was presented. This new class of basis polynoials, originally presented for conservative systes, is extended to ultidiensional, non-conservative systes here, and the corresponding property regarding the eigenvalues of the Galerkin atrices is proved. Keywords: ADER, Finite Volue, Galerkin, Eigenvalues, Convergence. Background ADER-FV ethods were first devised by Toro and collaborators see Millington et al. [8]. Dubser et al. [2] obviated the need for the cubersoe analytic work reuired by the Cauchy-Kowalesky procedure by use of a Galerkin predictor. Although ADER-FV ethods have been very successful in solving a large variety of different hyperbolic systes e.g. see Dubser et al. [3], Balsara et al. [], Hidalgo and Dubser [6], Zanotti and Dubser [], they reain relatively coputationally expensive. Montecinos and Balsara [9] have proposed a new, ore efficient class of basis polynoials. While the ethod was given for conservative, one-diensional systes in the original paper, it is extended here to general non-conservative, ultidiensional systes. where Q is the vector of conserved variables, F= F, F 2, F 3 and B = B, B 2, B 3 are respectively the conservative nonlinear fluxes and atrices corresponding to the purely nonconservative coponents of the syste, and Q is the algebraic source vector. Define spatial variables x, x 2, x 3. Take the space-tie cell C= [ ] [ ] [ x i, x i + x 2 i 2, x 2 i 2 + x 3 i 3, x 3 i 3 +] [tn, t n+ ]. Define the scaled spatial and teporal variables: Thus, C becoes: k = xk x k i k x k i k + xk i k τ= t t n t n+ t n 2a 2b 2. Extension of the Montecinos-Balsara Forulation Take a non-hoogeneous, non-conservative, hyperbolic syste of the for: t + F Q+ B Q Q= Q Eail address: hj305@ca.ac.uk Haran Jackson, 2, 3,τ [0, ] 4 3 By rescaling F, B, by the appropriate constant factors, and defining =, 2, 3, within C euation becoes: τ + F Q+ B Q Q= Q 4 A basisψ 0,...,ψ N of P N and inner product, are now reuired to produce a polynoial reconstruction of Q within C. 2 Convergence Properties & Extension to Non-Conservative Multidiensional ystes 2 Traditionally, this basis has been chosen to be either nodal ψ i α j =δi j whereα 0,...,α N are a set of nodes, e.g. the Gauss-Legendre abscissae - see Dubser et al. [2], or odal e.g. the Legendre polynoials - see Balsara et al. []. Montecinos and Balsara [9] take the following approach., is taken to be the usual integral product on [0, ]. upposing that N= 2n+ for soe n N, Gauss-Legendre nodesα 0,...,α n are taken. The basisψ=ψ 0,...,ψ N P N is taken with the following properties for i=0,..., n: ψ i α j =δi j ψ i α j = 0 5 ψ n++i α j = 0 ψ n++i α j =δi j Define the following subsets: Ψ 0 =ψ i : 0 i n Ψ =ψ i : n+ i 2n+ 6a 6b The WENO ethod as used in Dubser et al. [5] produces an order-n polynoial reconstruction w, 2, 3 of the data at tie t n in [ ] [ ] [ x i, x i + x 2 i 2, x 2 i 2 + x 3 i 3, x 3 i 3 +]. It is used as initial data in the proble of finding the Galerkin predictor. Taking representation w=w abc ψ a ψ b 2 ψ c 3 we have for 0 i, j, k n: w i jk = w α i,α j,α k w n+i+ jk = w α i,α j,α k w in+ j+k = 2w α i,α j,α k w i jn+k+ = 3w α i,α j,α k 7a 7b 7c 7d Take the following teporal nodes, whereτ,...,τ N are the usual Legendre-Gauss nodes on [0, ] andτ 0 = 0 orτ 0 = if we are perforing a Continuous Galerkin/ Discontinuous Galerkin reconstruction, respectively: for soe coefficients, F, B,. The nodal basis representation is used for the coefficients ofθ : F = F B = B 00 = In general, we have: + B 2 00 F ιξκ F = ι ξ υ κ ζ Q B ιξκ = ι ξ υ κ ζ + B 3 B Q Q 0a 00 0b 0c a b ιξκ = ι ξ υ κ ζ Q c where the right-hand-side is evaluated at the nodal point corresponding to. The full expressions are oitted here for brevity s sake, but note that for a one-diensional syste: F 00 = F B 00 = 00 B + B = 00 2a b 2 θκ,τ θκ 00,τ c where,τ are the spatial and teporal coordinates where θ 00 = 0 and θ 00 =. Note that B is a rank 3 tensor. Consider functions f, g of the following for: τ 0,...,τ N 8 DefineΦ=φ 0,...,φ N P N to be the set of Lagrange interpolating polynoials on the teporal nodes. We now define the spatio-teporal polynoial basisθ=φ Ψ Ψ Ψ= θ for 0 N+ 4. Define subsetsθ ιξκ =Φ Ψ ι Ψ ξ Ψ κ = θ ιξκ whereι,ξ,κ 0, for 0 N+ n+ 3. Denoting the Galerkin predictor by, take the following set of approxiations: Q θ =θ ιξκ ιξκ F Q θ F =θ ιξκ 9a F ιξκ 9b B Q Q θ B =θ ιξκ B ιξκ 9c Q θ =θ ιξκ ιξκ 9d f τ,, 2, 3 = f τ τ f f 2 2 f 3 3 3a g τ,, 2, 3 = g τ τ g g 2 2 g 3 3 3b Define the following integral operators: [ f, g ] t = f τ t g τ t f, g f 2, g 2 f 3, g 3 4a f, g= f τ, g τ f, g f 2, g 2 f 3, g 3 4b Multiplying 9b by test functionθ α, using the polynoial approxiations for Q, F, B,, and integrating over space and tie gives: θ α, θ τ = θ θ α,θ B θ α, F k k 5
3 Convergence Properties & Extension to Non-Conservative Multidiensional ystes The Discontinuous Galerkin Method This ethod of coputing the Galerkin predictor allows solutions to be discontinuous at teporal cell boundaries, and is also suitable for stiff source ters. Integrating 5 by parts in tie gives: [θα ] θα,θ τ,θ = [θ α, w] 0 + θ α,θ B 6 θ α, θ F k k where w is the reconstruction obtained at the start of the tie step with the WENO ethod. Take the following ordering: θ N+ 3 h+n+ 2 i+n+ j+k τ,,υ,ζ=φ h τψ i ψ j υψ k ζ 7 where 0 h, i, j, k N. Thus, define the following: U α = [ ] θα θ α,θ τ,θ = R M τ, M 3 8a Vα θ k = θ α, = M τ M k M, M 3 k 8b k W α = [ θ α,ψ γ ] 0 wγ = R 0 M 3 Z α = θ α,θ = M τ M 3 where Ψ γ =Ψ Ψ Ψ and: Thus: Take the definitions: Mi τ j = φ i,φ j M i j = ψ i,ψ j R i j =φ i φ j M τ, i j M, i j R 0 i = φ i,φ j = ψ i,ψ j =φ i 0 8c 8d 9 U α = W α + Z α B k α F k 20 D = M M, E = R M τ, 2 Noting that E= R 0, we have, by inversion of U: Thus, we have: = I 3 w+ E M τ I 3 B 22 E M τ I k D I 3 k F k hi jk = w i jk + E M τ i jk B i jk 23 h E M τ Din F h n jk + D jn F 2 ink + D kn F 3 i jn Note then that ιξκ is a function of ιξκ, B ιξκ, F: ιξκ =F ιξκ +F B ιξκ +G ιξκ F,..., F 24 wheref,g ιξκ are linear functions. Note in turn that, by c: ιξκ =H abc 25 0, 0, 0 a, b, c ι,ξ,κ whereh is a nonlinear function. In the case of stiff source ters, the following Picard iteration procedure can be used to solve 23, as adapted fro Montecinos and Balsara [9]: ιξκ =F H ιξκ abc + + 0, 0, 0 a, b, c ι,ξ,κ a, b, c ι,ξ,κ 26 +F B ιξκ F +Gιξκ F,..., 2.2. The Continuous Galerkin Method This ethod of coputing the Galerkin predictor is not suitable for stiff source ters, but is less coputationally expensive and ensures continuity across teporal cell boundaries. The first N + eleents of are fixed by iposing the following condition:, 0=w 27 For v R N+2 and X M N+ 2,N+ 2 R, let v= v 0, v and X 00 X X= 0 X 0 X where v 0, X 00 are the coponents relating solely to the first N + coponents of v. We only need to find the latter coponents of, and thus, fro 5, we have: θ α, θ τ = θ α,θ B θ θ α, F k k + θ α,θ 0 0 B 0 θ 0 0 θ α, F k k 28
4 Convergence Properties & Extension to Non-Conservative Multidiensional ystes 4 Define the following: Thus: U α = V k α = θ α, θ α, θ 29a τ 29b θ k W α = θ α,θ 0 B 0 θ α, Z α = θ α,θ θ 0 0 k F k 29c 29d U α = W α+ Z α B k α F k 30 ψi,ψ j a j = ψ i, p for i=0,..., N. This produces the following result: p=a j ψ j a=m x, x i = ψ i, p 34 Taking a R N+, define: p=a 0 ψ a N ψ N P N 35 Note that: M, a = ψ i,ψ i 0 a ψ i,ψ N an = ψ i, p 36 Thus, by 34: M M, a ψ i= Da i i ψ i = p 37 Note that, as with the discontinuous Galerkin ethod, W has no dependence on the degrees of freedo in. As the source ters are not stiff, the following iteration is used: By induction: D a i ψ i = p 38 U α + = W α+ Z α B k α Fk 3 for any N. As p P N, D N+ a=0. As a was chosen arbitrarily, D N+ = 0. No specific choice has been ade for N N and thus the result holds in general. 3. Convergence Properties In Jackson [7] it was proved that for traditional choices of polynoial bases, the eigenvalues of U i are all 0 for any N N, for i=, 2, 3. This iplies that in the conservative, hoogeneous case B= =0, owing to the Banach Fixed Point Theore, existence and uniueness of a solution are established, and convergence to this solution is guaranteed. As noted in Dubser and Zanotti [4], in the linear case it is iplied that the iterative procedure converges after at ost N + iterations. A proof of this result for the Montecinos-Balsara polynoial basis class is now provided here. For the theory in linear algebra reuired for this section, please consult a standard textbook on the subject, such as Nering [0]. Take the definitions 9, 2. Consider that: Therefore: U k = E M τ I k D I 3 k 32 U k = E M τ I k D I 3 k 33 A atrix X is nilpotent X k = 0 for soe k N if and only if all its eigenvalues are 0. Note that U k is nilpotent if D = 0 for soe N. Note that if p P N then p = a j ψ j for soe uniue coefficient vector a. Thus, taking inner products withψ i, we have 4.
