1 Null Controllability of the D Heat Equation Using Flatness Philippe Martin, Lionel osier and Pierre ouchon arxiv:34.546v [ath.oc] 9 Apr 3 Abstract We derive in a direct and rather straightforward way the null controllability of a -D heat equation with boundary control. We use the so-called flatness approach, which consists in paraeterizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a flat output. This provides an explicit control law achieving the exact steering to zero. Nuerical experients deonstrate the relevance of the approach. I. INTODUCTION The controllability of the heat equation was first considered in the -D case, [] [3]), and very precise results were obtained by the classical oent approach. Next using Carlean estiates and duality arguents the null controllability was proved in [4], [5] for any bounded doain in N, any control tie T, and any control region. This Carlean approach proves very efficient also with seilinear parabolic equations, [4]. By contrast the nuerical control of the heat equation or of parabolic equations) is in its early stage, see e.g. [6] [8]. A natural candidate for the control input is the control of inial L nor, which ay be obtained as a trace of the solution of the backward) adjoint proble whose terinal state is the iniizer of a suitable quadratic cost. Unfortunately its coputation is a hard task [8]; indeed the terinal state of the adjoint proble associated with soe regular initial state of the control proble ay be highly irregular, which leads to severe troubles in the nuerical coputation of the control function. All the above results rely on soe observability inequalities for the adjoint syste. A direct approach which does not involve the adjoint proble was proposed in [], [3], [9]. In [] a fundaental solution for the heat equation with copact support in tie was introduced and used to prove null controllability. The results in [], [] can be used to derive control results on a bounded interval with one boundary control in soe Gevrey class. An extension of those results to the seilinear heat equation in D was obtained in [9] in a ore explicit way through the resolution of an ill-posed proble with data of Gevrey order in t. In this paper we derive in a straightforward way the null P. This syste describes the dynaics of the teperature θ in an insulated etal strip where the control u is the heat flux at one end. More precisely given any final tie T > and any initial state θ L Ω) we provide an explicit very regular control input u such that the state reached at tie T is zero, i.e. θt, x, x ) =, x Ω. We use the so-called flatness approach, [], which consists in paraeterizing the solution θ and the control u by the derivatives of a flat output y section II); this notion was initially introduced for finite-diensional nonlinear) systes, and later extended to in particular) parabolic PDEs, [] [5]. Choosing a suitable trajectory for this flat output y then yields an explicit series for a control achieving the exact steering to zero section III). Nuerical experients deonstrate the relevance of the approach section IV). This paper extends [6] to the -D case, with oreover a ore elegant and efficient construction of the control. This is probably the first exaple using flatness for otion planning of a truly -D PDE. In the sequel we will consider series with infinitely any derivatives of soe functions. The notion of Gevrey order is a way of estiating the growth of these derivatives: we say that a function y C [, T ]) is Gevrey of order s on [, T ] if there exist positive constants M, such that y p) t) M p!s p t [, T ], p. More generally if K N is a copact set and y is a function of class C on K i.e. y is the restriction to K of a function of class C on soe open neighbourhood Ω of K), we say y is Gevrey of order s in x, s in x,...,s N in x N on K if there exist positive constants M,,..., N such that for all x K and p N N x p x p p N xn yx) N i= M p i!) si. N i= pi i
2 By definition, a Gevrey function of order s is also of order r for r s. Gevrey functions of order are analytic entire if s < ). Gevrey functions of order s > have a divergent Taylor expansion; the larger s, the ore divergent the Taylor expansion. Iportant properties of analytic functions generalize to Gevrey functions of order s > : the scaling, addition, ultiplication and derivation of Gevrey functions of order s > is of order s, see [7], [8]. But contrary to analytic functions, functions of order s > ay be constant on an open set without being constant everywhere. For exaple the step function if t φ s t) := if t e t) k if t ], [, e t) k + e t k where k = s ), is Gevrey of order s on [, ] and in fact on ); notice φ s ) =, φ s ) = and φ s i) ) = φ s i) ) = for all i. In conjunction with growth estiates we will repeatedly use Stirling s forula n! n/e) n πn. II. NULL CONTOLLABILITY In this section we derive an explicit control steering the syste fro any initial state θ L Ω) at tie to the final state at tie T >. Two ideas are involved: on the one hand thanks to the flatness property it is easy, by selecting a suitable trajectory for the flat output, to find a control achieving the steering to zero starting fro a certain set of initial conditions; on the other hand thanks to the regularizing property of the heat equation this set is reached fro any θ L Ω) when applying first a zero control for soe tie lea ). Lea : Let θ L Ω) and τ >. Consider the final state θ τ x, x ) := θτ, x, x ) reached when applying the control ut) :=, t [, τ], starting fro the initial state θ. Then θ τ can be expanded as with θ τ x, x ) = j e λjτ e j x ) i y j,i C + ) i! τ τ i x i y j,i i)!, where C is soe positive constant depending only on θ. Proof: We can decopose θ as the Fourier series θ x, x ) = c j,n e j x ) cosnπx ) j,n where the convergence holds in L, ) and c j,n <. j,n The solution of )-5) starting fro θ then reads θt, x, x ) = c j,n e λj+n π )t e j x ) cosnπx ) j,n and in particular θ τ x, x ) = j,n c j,n e λj+n π )τ e j x ) cosnπx ). This series obviously uniforly converges since c j,n e λj+n π )τ e j x ) cosnπx ) C e n π τ. Moreover θ τ x, x ) = j,n i c j,n e λj+n π )τ e j x ) ) i nπx ) i i)! = e λjτ e j x ) x i i)! j i ) i c j,n e n π τ nπ)i. i)! n }{{} =:y j,i

On the other hand integrating by parts yields h i x)dx = i h i x)dx τ i ) 3 = τ) i e τπ x dx = i)! i i!τ) i π τ e x dx i! C 3 τ i iτ, where C 3 is soe positive constant and we have again used Stirling s forula. As a consequence y j,i sup c j,n h i n) C j,n n i i + τ ) i! τ i where C is soe positive constant. Finally x i y j,i i)! C + ) i! x ) i <, τ i)! τ where the series in the rhs is obviously convergent. Theore : Consider any θ L Ω), T >, τ, T ) and s, ). Then there exists a sequence y j ) j of Gevrey functions of order s on [τ, T ] such that the control if t τ, ut, x ) := e λjt e j x ) yi) j t) if τ < t T i )! i,j steers the syste fro the initial state θ at tie to the final state at tie T. Moreover u is Gevrey of order s in t and / in x on [, T ] [, L]; the solution θ of )-5) belongs to C [, T ], L Ω) ) and is Gevrey of order s in t, / in x and s/ in x on [ε, T ] Ω for all ε, T ). Proof: By lea the state reached at tie τ is with θ τ x, x ) = j Clearly the functions e λjτ e j x ) i x i y j,i i)!, y j,i = n c j,n e n π τ n π ) i. ȳ j t) := n c j,n e n π t satisfy y i) j τ) = y j,i for all i, j. Hence the desired functions y j are given by t τ ) y j t) := φ s y T τ j t) φ s is defined at the end of the introduction). Indeed by lea the growth property of the y j,i s iplies the y j s are analytic on [τ, ) T ] hence Gevrey of order s > ; since t τ φt) := φ s T τ is also Gevrey of order s on [τ, T ], so is the product y j of y j by φ. On the other hand the definition of φ s iplies the y j s satisfy for all i, j y i) j τ) = y j,i y i) j T ) =, so that θτ +, x, x ) = θ τ x, x ). The proposed control u achieves the steering to zero: the solution θ of ) 5) is then given by 6) and obviously satisfies θt, x, x ) = ; by proposition it is Gevrey of order s in t, / in x, and s/ in x on [τ, T ] Ω. Moreover u is also Gevrey of order s in t and / in x on [, T ] [, L]. It can be shown that for ε t τ the solution θ of ) 5) is Gevrey of order in t, / in x, and s/ in x on [τ, T ] Ω. The proof is oitted since this fact is not used to design the control. To coplete the proof we then only need to check the copatibility at t = τ, ie k t θτ +, x, x ) = k t θτ, x, x )
5 for all k and x Ω. Indeed using the notations in the proof of lea t k θτ +, x, x ) = i,j = i,j = i,j e j x ) xi i)! k t e j x ) xi i)! e j x ) xi i)! n [ e λ jt y i) j t) ] t=τ k = k = ) k λ j ) e λjτ y j,i+k ) k λ j ) e λjτ c j,n e n π τ n π ) i+k = e j x )c j,n e λj+nπ)τ ) i nπx ) i i)! j,n i k ) k λ j ) n π ) k = = λ j n π ) k c j,n e λj+n π )τ j,n e j x ) cosnπx ) = k t θτ, x, x ). Hence the solution θ of )-5) belongs to C [, T ], L Ω) ) and is Gevrey of order s in t, / in x and s/ in x on [ε, T ] Ω for all ε, T ). As a consequence u is Gevrey of order s in t and / in x on [, T ] [, L]. IV. NUMEICAL EXPEIMENTS We illustrate the approach on a nuerical exaple. The paraeters are L =, T =.3, τ =.5, s =.65. The initial condition is the double step if x, x ), ), ), if x, x ), θ x, x ) := ), ), if x, x ), ), ), if x, x ), ), ). Its nonzero Fourier coefficients are ) l+p c l+,p+ = π, l, p. l + )p + ) Notice θ is not continuous and that its Fourier coefficients decay fairly slowly. The series 6)-7) and Fourier expansions have been truncated at a large enough order for a good accuracy. The following figures are snapshots of the tie evolution of the teperature fro t = to t = T.5 by increents of.5 the snapshot at t = T, being exactly, is oitted), followed by the coplete tie evolution of the control effort. An interesting question to study in the future is the tradeoff between τ and T τ to reach the zero state with the sallest control effort: longer regularization τ or longer duration T τ of the active control?
