INTEGRAL REPRESENTATION FOR BESSEL S FUNCTIONS OF THE FIRST KIND AND NEUMANN SERIES arxiv: v1 [math.ca] 31 Aug 217 ENRICO DE MICHELI Abstract. A Fourier-type integra representation for Besse s function of the first kind and compex order is obtained by using the Gegenbuaer extension of Poisson s integra representation for the Besse function aong with a trigonometric integra representation of Gegenbauer s poynomias. This representation ets us express various functions reated to the incompete gamma function in series of Besse s functions. Neumann series of Besse functions are aso considered and a new cosed-form integra representation for this cass of series is given. The density function of this representation is simpy the anaytic function on the unit circe associated with the sequence of coefficients of the Neumann series. Exampes of new cosed-form integra representations of specia functions are aso presented. 1. Introduction The Besse function of the first kind and order ν is defined by the series [27, Eq. 8, p. 4] (1.1) J ν (z) =. ( z ν 2) ( 1) k (z/2) 2k, (z C; ν C, ν 1, 2,...), k! Γ(ν + k + 1) k= which is convergent absoutey and uniformy in any cosed domain of z and in any bounded domain of ν. It is the soution of Besse s equation (1.2) z 2 d2 y dz 2 + z dy dz + (z2 ν 2 ) =, which is nonsinguar at z =. The function J ν (z) is therefore an anaytic function of z for any z, except for the branch point z = if ν is not an integer. In this paper, a new integra representation for the Besse functions of the first kind and order ν C, Re ν > 1 2, is obtained. This representation, which is given in Section 3, generaizes to compex vaues of the order ν the cassica Besse s integra (1.3) J n (z) = ( i)n e iz cos θ cos nθ dθ (n Z), which hods ony for integra order vaues (see, e.g., formua (3.21)). The Besse functions of the first kind are expressed in terms of an integra of Fourier-type, which invoves the reguarized incompete gamma function P ({ν}, z), with {ν} being the (compex) fractiona part of ν. This resut is achieved by using the Poisson integra representation of J ν+n (z) (Re ν > 1 2, =, 1, 2,...) given in terms of 21 Mathematics Subject Cassification. 33C1,4C1,33B2. Key words and phrases. 2 2 E. DE MICHELI Gegenbauer poynomias and then by expoiting the integra representation of the atter poynomias that we prove in Section 2. The Fourier form of the integra representation of J ν+n (z) motivates us to consider the Fourier inversion formua in Section 4. This anaysis aows us to obtain, for either integer and haf-integer orders ν, a trigonometric expansion of the ower incompete gamma function, whose coefficients are reated to (modified and unmodified) Besse functions of the first kind. Thus, cassica Besse series expansions of various specia functions which are connected with the incompete gamma function, can be easiy obtained in a unified form. A Neumann series of Besse functions is an expansion of the type (1.4) a n J ν+n (z) (z, ν C), n= where {a n } n= are given coefficients. Many specia functions of the mathematica physics enjoy an expansion of this type, e.g., Kummer confuent hypergeometric s, Lomme s, Kevin s, Whittaker s, and so on. In Section 5 we expoit the nove representation of Besse s functions presented in Section 3 in order to derive a simpe cosed-form integra representation of expansions (1.4). The set of coefficients {a n } n=, which characterizes the series (1.4), comes into this integra representation in a very simpe way through the associated anaytic function A(z) in the unit disk D, i.e.: A(z) = n= a nz n with a weak restriction on the sequence of coefficients {a n }, which is sufficient to guarantee the boundedness of A(z) on the unit circe. Exampes of specia functions with this kind of cosed-form integra representation are aso given. 2. Connection between the coefficients of Gegenbauer and Fourier expansions The Gegenbauer (utraspherica) poynomias C ν(x) of order ν (ν > 1 2, ν ) may be defined by means of the generating function [23, Eq. (4.7.23)] (see aso [23, Eq. (4.7.6)]): (2.1) C ν (x) t = (1 2xt + t 2 ) ν (x [ 1, 1]; t ( 1, 1)). = For fixed ν, the Gegenbauer poynomias are orthogona on the interva [ 1, 1] with respect to the weight function w ν (x) = (1 x 2 ) (ν 1/2), that is: (2.2) where: 1 1 (2.3) h ν = C ν (x) C ν n(x) w ν (x) dx = h ν δ,n, ν Γ( + 2ν) ( + ν)! [Γ(ν)] 2. Particuary important specia cases of Gegenbauer poynomias are obtained for ν = 1/2, which gives the Legendre poynomias P (x), for ν = 1 yieding the Chebyshev poynomias of the second kind U (x), and in a suitabe imiting form for ν the Chebyshev poynomias of the first kind T (x) [23]: im ν (!/(2ν) )C ν (x) = T (x), where ( ) denotes the Pochhammer symbo.
BESSEL FUNCTIONS OF THE FIRST KIND 3 e iu δ + (u) δ (u) 1 δ (u) 1 e iu Figure 1. Integration path for the evauation of the integra representation (2.5) of the Gegenbauer poynomias. For Re ν > they admit the foowing integra representation [26, Eq. (1), p. 559]: (2.4) C ν (x) = ( + ν) hν (x + i 1 x 2 cos η) (sin η) 2ν 1 dη. Now, our aim in this section is to present an integra representation of the Gegenbauer poynomias. To this end, we prove the foowing proposition (see aso [6, 9]). Proposition 2.1. For Re ν >, the foowing integra representation for the Gegenbauer poynomias C ν (cos u) (u [, ], N ) hods: (2.5) C ν (cos u) = ( + ν) hν 2 ν 1 e iν (sin u) (2ν 1) 2 u u e i(+ν)t (cos u cos t) ν 1 dt. Proof. In representation (2.4) we first introduce the variabe u, defined by x = cos u (u [, ]): (2.6) C ν (cos u) = ( + ν) hν (cos u + i sin u cos η) (sin η) 2ν 1 dη. Then, in the integra in (2.6) we substitute to η the compex integration variabe τ defined by It can be checked that e iτ = cos u + i sin u cos η. (2.7) 2e iτ (cos τ cos u) = (e iτ e iu )(e iτ e iu ) = sin 2 u sin 2 η.
4 E. DE MICHELI Now, since e iτ dτ = sin u sin η dη, the integrand on the right-hand side of (2.6) can be written as foows: (2.8) (sin u) (2ν 1) e i(+1)τ [ (e iτ e iu )(e iτ e iu ) ] (ν 1) dτ = (sin u) (2ν 1) e i(+ν)τ [2(cos τ cos u)] (ν 1) dτ. In order to determine the integration path, consider the intermediate step where e iτ is chosen as integration variabe; the origina path (corresponding to η [, ]) is the (oriented) inear segment δ (u) starting at e iu and ending at e iu. Since (as shown by (2.8)) the integrand is an anaytic function of e iτ in the disk e iτ < 1 (since N ), the integration path δ (u) can be repaced by the circuar path δ + (u) = {e iτ : τ = t, u t 2 u} (see Fig. 1). Moreover, by using the fact that [(e iτ e iu )(e iτ e iu )] ν 1 is positive for e iτ δ (u) R and therefore at e iτ = e i, we concude from the eft equaity in (2.7) that in the r.h.s. of (2.8) the foowing specification hods (for τ = t; u t 2 u): [2(cos t cos u)] ν 1 = e i(ν 1) [2(cos u cos t)] ν 1. Finay, accounting for this atter expression, the integra representation (2.5) foows directy from (2.6). Remark 1. In the proof of Proposition 2.1 we coud even choose the integration path δ (u) = {e iτ : τ = t, u t u}, oriented as shown in Fig. 1. Foowing the same arguments given above, it is easiy seen that this option yieds the foowing aternative integra representation of the Gegenbauer poynomias [6, 8]: (2.9) C ν (cos u) = ( + ν) hν 2 ν 1 (sin u) 2ν 1 u u e i(+ν)t (cos t cos u) ν 1 dt. 3. Fourier-type integra representation of Besse functions of the first kind It is we-known that the Besse functions of the first kind of integra order n can be represented by Besse s trigonometric integra (1.3) (see aso [11, Eq ]). For n Z, J n (x) satisfies the symmetry reation: J n (x) = ( 1) n J n (x). This atter reation no onger hods when n is not an integra number since, for ν Z, J ν (x) and J ν (x) are ineary independent soutions of the Besse equation of order ν. Numerous formuae express the Besse functions of the first kind as definite integras, which can be expoited to obtain, for instance, approximations and asymptotic expansions (see [27, Chapter VI], [12], and the website [11, Sect. 1.9] for a usefu coection of formuae). Our goa in what foows is to generaize the trigonometric representation (1.3) in order to obtain a Fourier-type integra representation for the Besse functions of the first kind with hods for compex order ν with Re ν > 1 2. We can prove the foowing theorem.. Theorem 3.1. Let N = {, 1, 2,...} be a non-negative integer, and ν any compex number such that Re ν > 1 2. Then, the foowing integra representation for the Besse functions of the first kind J ν+ (z) hods: (3.1) J ν+ (z) = ( i) J (ν) z (θ) e iθ dθ ( N, Re ν > 1 2 ),
BESSEL FUNCTIONS OF THE FIRST KIND 5 where the 2-periodic function J (ν) z (θ) is given by (3.2) J (ν) z (θ) = iν 2 eiν[θ sgn(θ)] e iz cos θ P ({ν}, iz (1 cos θ)) (Re ν > 1 2 ), and sgn( ) is the sign function,{ν} is the compex fractiona part of ν, P (ν, w). = γ(ν, w)/γ(ν) denotes the reguarized incompete gamma function, γ(ν, w) being the ower incompete gamma function. Proof. We start from Gegenbauer s generaization of Poisson s integra representation of the Besse functions of the first kind [27, 3.32, Eq. (1), p. 5]: (3.3) J ν+ (z) = ( i) Γ(2ν)! ( z ) ν Γ(ν )Γ( 1 2 )Γ(2ν + ) 2 e iz cos u (sin u) 2ν C ν (cos u) du, where C ν (t) is the Gegenbauer poynomia of order ν and degree. Formua (3.3) hods for N and Re ν > 1 2. Now, we pug (2.5) into (3.3) and, using the Legendre dupication formua for the gamma function, we obtain: (3.4) J ν+ (z) = ( i) e iν z ν 2 u du sin u e iz cos u e i(+ν)θ (cos u cos θ) ν 1 dθ. 2 Γ(ν) Interchanging the order of integration, (3.4) can be written as foows: (3.5) [ J ν+ (z) = ( i) e iν z ν θ dθ e i(+ν)θ e iz cos u (cos u cos θ) ν 1 sin u du 2 Γ(ν) 2 ] 2 θ + dθ e i(+ν)θ e iz cos u (cos u cos θ) ν 1 sin u du. Next, changing the integration variabes: θ 2 θ and u u, the second integra on the r.h.s. of (3.5) becomes: e iν2 θ dθ e i(+ν)θ e iz cos u (cos u cos θ) ν 1 sin u du, which, inserted in (3.5), yieds: [ J ν+ (z) = ( i) z ν θ e iν dθ e i(+ν)θ e iz cos u (cos u cos θ) ν 1 sin u du 2 Γ(ν) (3.6) ] θ +e iν dθ e i(+ν)θ e iz cos u (cos u cos θ) ν 1 sin u du. Formua (3.6) can then be written as foows: (3.7) J ν+ (z) = ( i) where (3.8) u J (ν) z (θ) e iθ dθ ( N, Re ν > ), 1 J (ν) z (θ) = zν sgn(θ)] eiν[θ e izt (t cos θ) ν 1 dt (Re ν > ). 2Γ(ν) cos θ
6 E. DE MICHELI Then, changing in (3.8) the integration variabe iz(t cos θ) t and recaing that for Re ν >, γ(ν, w) = w tν 1 e t dt, J (ν) z (θ) can be rewritten as foows: (3.9) J (ν) z (θ) = iν 2 eiν[θ sgn(θ)] e iz cos θ P (ν, iz (1 cos θ)) (Re ν > ). The reguarized gamma function P (ν, w) enjoys the foowing recurrence reation [11, Eq ]: (3.1) P (ν, w) = P (ν k, w) e w k j=1 w ν j Γ(ν j + 1) (k = 1, 2,...). Let us set k as the integer part of Re ν, i.e.: k = [Re ν], where (3.11) [x]. = { x (the greatest integer x) for x, x (the smaest integer x) for x <. Moreover, we denote by {ν} the compex fractiona part of ν, defined as: {ν}. = ν [Re ν], with 1 < Re{ν} < 1. We can then insert formua (3.1) into (3.9) and obtain: (3.12) J (ν) z (θ) = iν 2 eiν[θ sgn(θ)] e iz cos θ P ({ν}, iz (1 cos θ)) e iz 1 j [Re ν] ( iz) ν j (1 cos θ)ν j. Γ(ν j + 1) When pugged into (3.7) the second term in the squared brackets of (3.12) (which is different from zero ony if [Re ν] 1) contributes with a (finite) inear combination of the foowing integras: (3.13) e iν[θ sgn(θ)] (1 cos θ) ν j e iθ dθ, which are nu for N and Re ν j. Therefore, J (ν) z (θ) finay reads (3.14) J (ν) z (θ) = iν 2 eiν[θ sgn(θ)] e iz cos θ P ({ν}, iz (1 cos θ)) (Re ν > ). The ν-domain of representation (3.7) can be anayticay extended to the haf-pane Re ν > 1 2 where, for any z C \ (, ], the integrand is anaytic on θ (, ] and the integra defines a function which is ocay bounded on every compact subsets of Re ν > 1 2. To see this, it is usefu to make expicit the singuarity brought by the reguarized gamma function P (ν, w) by writing the atter in terms of Tricomi s form γ (ν, w) of the incompete gamma function, i.e.: P (ν, w) = w ν γ (ν, w), where (3.15) γ (ν, w). = e w n= w n Γ(ν + n + 1)
BESSEL FUNCTIONS OF THE FIRST KIND 7 is an entire function in w as we as in ν [24, Eq. (2)]. From (3.7) and (3.14) we thus obtain: J ν+ (z) = i([re ν] ) z {ν} 2 (3.16) e iν sgn(θ) e iz cos θ (1 cos θ) {ν} γ ({ν}, iz(1 cos θ)) e i(+ν)θ dθ. For negative vaues of Re{ν}, the integrand in (3.16) has a singuarity in θ = due to the term (1 cos θ) {ν}, which is integrabe for Re{ν} > 1 2. Hence, the integra (3.16) defines an anaytic function of z on C and representation (3.1) hods true for Re ν > 1 2. Note 1. Aternativey, if in the Abe-type integra in (3.8) we change the integration variabe [2z(t cos θ)/] ν t the function J (ν) z (θ) can be written in terms of Fresne-type integras F λ (z), i.e: (3.17) J (ν) ν 1 ([ ] ν ) 2z(1 cos θ) z (θ) = 2 ν+1 Γ(ν + 1) eiν[θ sgn(θ)] e iz cos θ F 1/ν, where (3.18) F λ (w). = w exp ( i 2 sλ) ds, and the cassica Fresne integras C(w) and S(w) can be obtained as rea and imaginary part of (3.18) with λ = 2, respectivey. Representation (3.1) can be reformuated as foows: [ i J ν+ (z) = iν 2 (3.19) + e iz cos θ P ({ν}, iz(1 cos θ))e i((+ν)θ+ν) dθ ] e iz cos θ P ({ν}, iz(1 cos θ))e i((+ν)θν) dθ = iν e iz cos θ P ({ν}, iz(1 cos θ)) cos(θ + ν(θ )) dθ. In the ast integra we now change the integration variabe: θ θ, and obtain for N, Re ν > 1 2 : (3.2) J ν+ (z) = i(ν+) e iz cos θ P ({ν}, iz(1 + cos θ)) cos(( + ν)θ) dθ. Now, we can put µ = + ν, with Re µ > 1 2. Since {µ} = {ν}, from (3.2) we therefore obtain the foowing integra representation of the Besse function of the first kind: (3.21) J µ (z) = iµ e iz cos θ P ({µ}, iz(1 + cos θ)) cos µθ dθ (Re µ > 1 2 ). As mentioned earier, formua (3.21) (and formuae (3.1) and (3.2) as we) generaizes to compex vaues of µ (Re µ > 1 2 ) the cassica Besse integra (1.3), which hods for integra vaues of m. In fact, if in (3.21) we put µ m integer, then {µ} = and, since γ (, w) = 1 (see [14, Eq. (2.2)]), formua (1.3) readiy foows. In view of the reation: I µ (w) = ( i) µ J µ (iw) for ph w 2 [11, Eq ], we have aso the foowing integra representation for the modified Besse function of the first kind I µ (z).
8 E. DE MICHELI Coroary 3.2. Let µ be any compex number such that Re µ > 1 2. Then the foowing integra representation for the modified Besse function of the first kind hods ( ph z 2 ): (3.22) I µ (z) = 1 e z cos θ P ({µ}, z(1 + cos θ)) cos µθ dθ (Re µ > 1 2 ). Formua (3.22) generaizes to compex vaues of µ, Re µ > 1 2, the we-known representation [11, Eq ]: (3.23) I m (z) = 1 which hods for integra vaues of m. e z cos θ cos mθ dθ (m Z), 4. Inversion of the Fourier representation Representation (3.1) shows that, for fixed z, the function i J ν+ (z) coincides with the th Fourier coefficient ( ) of the 2-periodic function J (ν) z (θ). We are thus prompted to consider the foowing trigonometrica series: (4.1) J (ν) z (θ) = 1 2 J(ν) (z) e iθ, where J (ν) = (z) denote, for fixed z, the th Fourier coefficients of J (ν) z (4.2) J(ν) (z) = J (ν) z (θ) e iθ dθ ( Z). J (ν) However, the Fourier sum representation (4.1) of J (ν) z (θ) can actuay be written expicity ony in some specific cases for the ack of knowedge of the Fourier coefficients with <. Indeed, equation (3.1) states that. However, from equation (3.2) we see that (for fixed z) J (ν) z foowing symmetry: (4.3) J (ν) z which, substituted in (4.2), gives (4.4) J(ν) (z) = ( θ) = e i2ν[θ sgn(θ)] J (ν) z (θ), J (ν) z (θ) e i2ν sgn(θ) e i(+2ν)θ dθ. (θ): (z) = i J ν+ (z) ony for (θ) enjoys the Formua (4.4) can thus induce a -index symmetry on the Fourier coefficients ony if 2ν is integer, i.e.: ν can be either integer or haf-integer (ν > 1 2 ). Case ν integer. If ν n is a nonnegative integer, formua (4.4) yieds: (4.5) J(n) (n) (z) = J 2n (z) ( Z; n =, 1, 2,...). (ν) J (z) (n) For n = a the Fourier coefficients J (z), Z, can be determined directy (n) (n) (n) from (3.1) since J (z) = J (z). For n, the Fourier coefficients J (z) with 2n+1 1 cannot be obtained by means of the above symmetry reation, but can nevertheess be expressed as (inear) functionas of the set { J (n) (z); N } [6].
BESSEL FUNCTIONS OF THE FIRST KIND 9 Since {ν} = and P (, w) = 1, from (3.2) we have: 2J (n) z (θ) = ( i) n e iz cos θ e inθ, which inserted in (4.1), and using (4.5), gives: (4.6) ( i) n e iz cos θ = J (n) n(z) + 2 = n+1 J(n) (z) cos( + n)θ, (n) where J (z) = i J n+ (z) for. If we put n =, formua (4.6) yieds: (4.7) e iz cos θ = J (z) + 2 i J (z) cos θ, which represents the we-known Jacobi-Anger expansion of a pane wave into a series of cyindrica waves [11, Eq ]. Case ν haf-integer. If ν is a positive haf-integer, ν n + 1 2, n =, 1, 2,..., the symmetry formua (4.4) reads: (4.8) J(n+ 1 2 ) (z) = J (n+ 1 2 ) 2n 1 (z) ( Z; n =, 1, 2,...). For n = the Fourier coefficients with < can be obtained from those with from the symmetry reation: J ( 1 2 ) (z) = J ( 1 2 ) 1 (z), ( Z). Instead, as in the case of integra ν, if n the Fourier coefficients J (n+ 1 2 ) (z) with 2n 1 are expressibe as inear functionas of the coefficients with. Now, we can pug formua (3.2) for J (n+ 1 2 ) z (θ) into (4.1) and, in view of (4.8), obtain the foowing expansion for the incompete gamma function of order 1 2 : (4.9) γ( 1 2, iz(1 cos θ)) = 2 i n sgn(θ)e i 4 e iz cos θ J(n+ 1 2 ) (z) sin( + n )θ. =1 = n Now, putting in (4.9) n =, ϕ = θ/2 and w 2 = 2iz we obtain: (4.1) γ( 1 2, w2 sin 2 ϕ) = 2 sgn(ϕ)e 1 2 w2 cos 2ϕ ( 1) I + 1 (w2 /2) sin(2 + 1)ϕ, 2 where we used the modified Besse functions of the first kind I ν (z) = ( i) ν J ν (iz). Finay, recaing that erf(z) = 1 2 γ( 1 2, z2 ), where erf(z) denotes the error function [11, Eq ], we obtain the foowing expansion: (4.11) erf(w sin ϕ) = 2e 1 2 w2 cos 2ϕ ( 1) I + 1 (w2 /2) sin(2 + 1)ϕ ( 2 2 < phw 2 ). = A simiar representation of the error function in terms of modified Besse functions of the first kind of integer order is given by Luke in [19, Eq. (2.11)] through the expansion of the confuent hypergeometric function in series of Besse functions. As a particuar case of (4.11), we first put ϕ = /2 and obtain (see aso [2, Eq. (2)]): (4.12) erf(w) = 2 e w2 /2 = = I (w2 /2).
1 E. DE MICHELI Simiary, if in (4.11) we put ϕ = /4 and w 2w, we get the expansion: (4.13) erf(w) = [ ] 2 ( 1) I 2+ 1 (w2 ) I (w2 ), 2 = which is equivaent to [11, Eq ] (see aso [2, Eq. (1), p. 122] and [25, Eqs. (33) and (34)]). Finay, as a ast exampe of appication of expansion (4.1), we can use the form (3.17) of J (n+ 1 2 ) z (θ) given in terms of Fresne integras. We can set ν = 1 2 in (3.17) and (4.1) and put w = 2(z/) 1 2, a = cos(θ )/2, then we obtain the foowing representation of Fresne s integra F 2 (w) =. C(w) + is(w) [11, Eqs and 7.2.8] (see aso (3.18)): (4.14) F 2 (aw) = w e i 4 w2 (2a 2 1) ( i) T 2+1 (a) j (w 2 /4), = where T k ( ) denotes the Chebyshev poynomias of the first kind and j (w) are the 1 spherica Besse functions of the first kind: j (w) = 2 /w J + 1 (w) Neumann series of Besse functions Neumann series of Besse functions are defined by [27, Chapter XVI] (5.1) N ν (z) a n J ν+n (z), n= where z is in genera a compex variabe, and ν and {a n } n= are constants. This kind of series have been investigated extensivey in view of their reevance in a number of physica probems (see the Introduction of Ref. [21] for a brief summary of these probems). In addition, Neumann series have been shown to be a usefu mathematica too to the soution of casses of differentia and mixed differences equations (see, e.g., [18] and [27, p. 53]). The domain of convergence of series (5.1) is a disk whose radius evidenty depends on the asymptotic behaviour of the sequence of coefficients a n and can be determined by the condition (5.2) im a n (z/2) ν+n 1/n n Γ(ν + n + 1) < 1. Integra representations are powerfu toos to deduce properties of series. In the case of expansions of type (5.1), exampes of integra representations have been given by Wikins [28], Rice [22] and, more recenty, by Pogány, Süi and coworkers [3, 15, 21]. In this section we give an integra representation of the function N ν (z), which the Neumann series converges to. This is achieved by expoiting the representation (3.1) of J ν+n (z) given is Section 3, and assuming the condition on the asymptotic behavior of the sequence {a n } which basicay guarantees the boundedness of trigonometric series. The Fourier-type integra representation of J ν+n (z) aows us to write N ν (z) in integra form with a kerne (the kerne associated with Neumann expansions) which is proportiona to the reguarized incompete gamma function P ({ν}, ) and is independent of the coefficients a n. The density function of the integra representation, instead, depends ony upon the given input sequence of coefficients a n, and is simpy the anaytic function, on the unit circe, associated with the sequence of coefficients {a n } n=. This representation easiy eads
BESSEL FUNCTIONS OF THE FIRST KIND 11 to cosed-form integra representations of Neumann expansions of Besse functions whenever the cosed-form of the anaytic function associated with the sequence of coefficients is known. As exampes of appication of this resut, new integra representations for bivariate Lomme s functions and Kevin s functions wi then be given. More exampes of this type of integra representations of specia functions of the mathematica physics wi be presented and anayzed in a forthcoming paper [1]. Now, we can prove the foowing theorem. Theorem 5.1. Let {a n } n= C be a nu sequence such that (5.3) a n <. n= Then, for Re ν > 1 2 the series (5.1) has the foowing integra representation in the sit domain z C \ (, ] if ν N or in z C if ν N : (5.4) N ν (z) = 1 2 where (5.5) A(e iθ ) = and the kerne K z (ν) (θ) is given by K z (ν) (θ) A(e i(θ/2) ) dθ a n e inθ, n= ( Re ν > 1 2), (5.6) K z (ν) (θ) = i ν e iν[θ sgn(θ)] e iz cos θ P ({ν}, iz (1 cos θ)), P ( ) denoting the reguarized gamma function. Proof. We first insert the integra representation (3.1) of J ν+n (z) into sum (5.1): (5.7) a n J ν+n (z) = ( i) n a n J (ν) z (θ) e inθ dθ (Re ν > 1 2 ), n= n= and then swap sum and integra to give: (5.8) dθ J (ν) z (θ) ( i) n a n e inθ = 1 2 n= K z (ν) (θ) A(e i(θ/2) ) dθ, where K z (ν) (θ) is given by (5.6) and A(e iθ ) by (5.5). By the Fubini-Tonei theorem, exchanging sum and integra is egitimate if (5.9) K z (ν) (θ) A(e i(θ/2) ) dθ <. For θ (, ] the kerne K z (ν) (θ) in (5.6) can be rewritten as foows: (5.1) K (ν) z (θ) = i [Re ν] z {ν} e iν[θ sgn(θ)] e iz cos θ (1 cos θ) {ν} γ ({ν}, iz (1 cos θ)), where γ (a, w) denotes the Tricomi form of the incompete gamma function. Reca that γ (a, w) is an entire function either in a and in w. Consequenty, on compact domains in Ω =. (z C \ (, ]) ( 1 2 < {ν} < 1) the ower incompete gamma function γ ({ν}, iz(1 cos θ)) can be bounded uniformy in θ, i.e.: γ ({ν}, iz(1 cos θ)) c z,ν, the constant c z,ν depending ony on z and ν. [14, 24]. From (5.1) it is cear that, for fixed θ, the mutivauedness of the kerne
12 E. DE MICHELI K z (ν) (θ) is brought by the fractiona power z {ν} (when {ν} ). From (5.1) we have: (5.11) (θ) c z,ν e 3 Im ν e z z Re{ν} 1 cos θ {ν} = C ν,z 1 cos θ {ν}, K z (ν) C ν,z being a finite constant on compacta in Ω. From (5.9) and (5.11) it then foows: (5.12) N ν (z) = C ν,z if Re{ν} > 1 2 n= a n K (ν) z (θ) A(e i(θ/2) ) dθ 1 cos θ {ν} dθ <, K z (ν) (θ) a n e i(θ/2) dθ n= and in view of (5.3). Statement (5.4) then foows. Remark 2. From (5.11) we see that for Re ν the kerne K z (ν) (θ) is bounded uniformy in θ on compacta in Ω. Hence, assumption (5.3) of boundedness for A(e iθ ) can be substituted by a ess restrictive assumption of integrabiity (see (5.12)). Expicity, this is guaranteed for instance (see [5, Theorem 1, p. 54]) by repacing (5.3) with the weaker asymptotic condition (5.13) n=1 a n n <, aong with the foowing additiona reguarity assumption on the sequence {a n }: ( k=n (5.14) a k p ) 1/p < for some integer p > 1, n n=1 where a k = (a k a k+1 ). Remark 3. The integra representation (5.4) can aso be written in the foowing form: (5.15) N ν (z) = eiz where the kerne is K ({ν}) ( iz(1 + cos θ)) A (ν) (θ) dθ, (5.16) K ({ν}) (w) = e w P ({ν}, w), and the function associated with the sequence of coefficients {a n } is: (5.17) A (ν) (θ) = i n+ν a n cos(n + ν)θ. n= 5.1. Lomme s functions of two variabes. As first exampe of appication of the previous anaysis, we now consider the bivariate Lomme functions U ν (w, z) and V ν (w, z) of order ν. These functions can be regarded as particuar soutions of the inhomogeneous Besse equation (see [17, Section 27] for a summary of their properties) and were first introduced by Lomme in the anaysis of diffraction probems [4, p. 438]. They have found appications aso, e.g., in soiton theory [13] and in the theory of incompete cyindrica functions [1, Chapter 4]. Lomme s functions
BESSEL FUNCTIONS OF THE FIRST KIND 13 of two variabes can be defined for unrestricted vaues of ν by the Neumann series [27, Section 16.5, Eqs. (5) and (6); p. 537, 538]: U ν (w, z) =. ( ( 1) n w ) ν+2n (5.18) Jν+2n (z), z n= V ν (w, z) =. ( w cos 2 + z2 2w + ν ) (5.19) + U ν+2 (w, z). 2 The function (w/z) ν U ν (w, z) has therefore the structure (5.1) with coefficients: { ( 1) n/2 (w/z) n if n is even, (5.2) a n (w, z) = if n is odd. Condition (5.3) then reads (5.21) a n (w, z) = w/z 2n <, n= n= if w/z < 1. Therefore, assuming the condition w/z < 1 and using (5.2), the anaytic function A (U) w,z(e iθ ) associated with the bivariate Lomme function U ν (w, z) then reads (see (5.5)): ( (5.22) A (U) w,z(e iθ ) = ( 1) n w ) 2n e i2nθ, z which is a power series converging for w/z < 1 and any θ (, ] to n= (5.23) A (U) w,z(e iθ 1 ) = 1 + (w/z) 2 e i2θ. Finay, from (5.4) the integra representation of the Lomme function U ν (w, z) reads expicity for Re ν > 1 2 and w/z < 1: (5.24) U ν (w, z) ( = iν w ) ν z P ({ν}, iz(1 + cos θ)) [cos νθ (w/z) 2 cos(ν 2)θ] 1 2(w/z) 2 cos 2θ + (w/z) 4 e ix cos θ dθ. In view of the restriction Re ν > 1 2, a simiar integra representation can be obtained from (5.19) for the Lomme function V ν (w, z) for Re ν < Kevin s functions. Kevin s functions of the first kind ber ν (x) and bei ν (x) are, respectivey, rea and imaginary part of the soution (the symbos stand indeed for Besse-rea and Besse-imaginary), reguar in the origin, of the differentia equation [2] (5.25) x 2 y + xy (ν 2 + ix 2 )y =, and emerge as soutions of various physics and engineering probems occurring in the theory of eectrica currents [7], magnetism [16], fuid mechanics and easticity [2]. Kevin s functions of order ν are reated to the Besse functions as foows [11]: (5.26) ber ν (x) + i bei ν (x) = e iν J ν (xe i/4 ) (x, ν R).
14 E. DE MICHELI Integra representations are known: for instance, when ν R, Schäfi s representation of Besse s function J ν (x) eads to the foowing representation of Kevin s [2]: (5.27) (5.28) ber ν ( 2 x) = 1 bei ν ( 2 x) = 1 sin ν sin ν [cos ν cos(x sin t νt) cosh(x sin t) sin ν sin(x sin t νt) sinh(x sin t)] dt e νt x sinh t cos(x sinh t + ν) dt, [cos ν sin(x sin t νt) sinh(x sin t) + sin ν cos(x sin t νt) cosh(x sin t)] dt which, when ν n is a nonnegative integer, reduce to: (5.29a) (5.29b) ber n ( 2 x) = ( 1)n bei n ( 2 x) = ( 1)n e νt x sinh t sin(x sinh t + ν) dt, cos(x sin t nt) cosh(x sin t) dt, sin(x sin t nt) sinh(x sin t) dt. A nove integra representation for ber ν (x)+i bei ν (x) can be readiy obtained from the resuts of Theorem 5.1 (see (5.4)) observing that, for x R and ν C, the foowing expansion in series of Besse functions hods [11, Eq ]: (5.3) ber ν (x) + i bei ν (x) = e i3ν/4 Referring to (5.1), we set k= x k 2 k/2 k! eik/4 J ν+k (x). (5.31) a k (x) = xk 2 k/2 k! eik/4 (k ). Then, from (5.5) the anaytic function associated with Kevin s functions reads: (5.32) A (K) x k x (θ) = 2 k/2 k! eik(θ+/4) = exp(x e i(θ+/4) / 2), k= the series converging for any x R and θ (, ]. Finay, using (5.4), (5.6) and (5.32) we have for Re ν > 1 2 the foowing integra representation for Kevin s functions: (5.33) ber ν ( 2x) + i bei ν ( 2x) = ei5ν/4 e cx cos θ P ({ν}, i 2x(1 + cos θ)) cos [νθ cx sin θ] dθ, with c =. exp(i/4) and the bar standing for compex conjugate. Formua (5.33) represents the generaization to Re ν > 1 2 of formuae (5.29).
