An Exact Upper Bound on the L p Lebesgue Constant and The -Rényi Entropy Power Inequaity for Integer Vaued Random Variabes arxiv: v [math.fa] 3 Aug 08 Peng Xu, Mokshay Madiman, James Mebourne Abstract In this paper, we proved an exact asymptoticay sharp upper bound of the L p Lebesgue Constant i.e. the L p norm of Dirichet kerne for p. As an appication, we aso verified the impication of a new -Rényi entropy power inequaity for integer vaued random variabes. Introduction. The best constants of important operators of harmonic anaysis is aways an area of persistent investigation, for exampe, the norm of the Fourier transform FT on ocay compact abeian LCA groups some basic facts of Fourier anaysis on LCA groups can be found in [9, 0]. In particuar, for Eucidean space, the norm of FT from L p R d to L p R d with p the Höder dua index of p and p, ] on Eucidean space is the content of Hausdorff-Young inequaity, and the sharp constant is proven by Beckner in [5]. For some abstract LCA groups, the norm of FT is proven by Gibert and Rzeszotnik in [8] for the case that the group is finite, and by Madiman and Xu in [5, ] for the case that the group is infinite and discrete or compact. Moreover, a ot of questions about estimating the L p norms of the FT of some specia functions have been considered. For exampe, the upper bound of the L p norm of the FT of uniform probabiity distribution functions on intervas is proven by K. Ba in [3, 4] and by Nazarov and Podkorytov in [8] with the foowing sharp resut: Ba s integra inequaity: sin x x R p dx < p for p As an appication, Ba aso derived the sharp constant for cube sicing inequaity in [3, 4], which, together with Rogozin s convoution inequaity [9] and a rearrangement argument [7, 4], can aso be used to derive the sharp constants for -Rényi entropy power inequaity the proofs can be found in [, 4,, 3], some basic facts about entropy power inequaity can be found in a survey paper [3] of the foowing form: N X + + X n N X i i Department of Mathematics, Eastern Michigan University. 2 for independent one-dimensiona random variabes X i, with the notation of -Rényi entropy power N X : f, where f is the density of X. As a further appication, Ba s integra inequaity aso pays a key roe in deriving the sharp bounds for margina densities of product one-dimensiona measures see []. On the other hand, the discrete version of Ba s integra inequaity, or equivaenty the question about an exact upper bound of the L p norm of the FT of uniform probabiity mass function supported on the integer interva {0,,, } this norm is aso caed L p Lebesgue constant was sti open. Note that this FT is precisey the normaized Dirichet kerne of ength defined by D x : sin x sin x ei x supported on [ /, /]. Before our work, some asymptotic estimates of the L p Lebesgue constant have been studied by, for exampe, [,, 0]. Specificay, for p, it is we known that see [0] / / D x dx 4 og 3 For the case that p >, Anderson et. a. in [, Lemma.] proved an asymptoticay sharp estimate: / D x p sin u p 0 u du dx + o p p + o p. 4 / This resut aso gives the connection between L p Legesgue constant and Ba s integra inequaity. However, no exact upper bound can be derived from these resuts. In this paper, we provide the foowing new resut: For p and, / / D p dx < p. it is easy to see that our upper bound coincides with the asymptotic estimation 4. We woud ike to mention something about the method in this paper. Motivated by the proof of [3, 8], the method is basicay to compare the distribution functions of D and a carefuy truncated Gaussian function, and to use a simiar argument as in [8]. We wi organize this paper as foows. In section, we wi provide the proof of our main resut Theorem.. In section 3, we wi describe an appication of the main resut in deriving a new -Rényi entropy power inequaity for integer vaued random variabes see Coroary 3.5. An exact upper bound on the L p Lebesgue constant p. Theorem.. Let be an integer. Then for p, the normaized Dirichet kerne sin x defined by D x : sin x ei x supported on [, ] satisfies the foowing integra inequaity: / D x p dx < p 5 /
Lemma.. Let be a positive integer, for x [0, /], sin x sin x < exp x Proof. We have sin x sin x sin x x Note that, for x [0, / ], x sin x x x exp exp k x k k x k k x k x k exp x > k k x Compare the right hand sides of these two expressions, it is sufficient to prove the inequaity hods termwise, which is: which is ceary true. x x x, for x [0, / ] 7 In order to prove Theorem., we wi appy [8, Lemma on distribution functions], we state this emma as foows. Lemma.3. For a non-negative function f : R [0,, its distribution function F y, y > 0 is defined by F y : λ{x R : fx > y} where λ is the Lebesgue measure. Let f and g be any two nonnegative measurabe functions on R. Let F and G be their distribution functions. Assume that both F y and Gy are finite for every y > 0. Assume aso that at some point y 0 the difference F G changes sign from to +. Let S : {x > 0 : f p g p L R}, then the function ϕp : py p 0 R f p g p dλ is increasing on p. In particuar, if R f p 0 g p 0 dλ 0, then R f p g p dλ 0 for each p > p 0. The equaity may hod ony if the functions F and G coincide. Proof of Theorem.. In order to appy Lemma.3, we construct our functions f as foows: k k If is even, [ ] exp x og on 0, + fx : 0 otherwise 3
If is odd, [ ] exp x og on 0, + 3 fx : 0 otherwise Note that f is actuay the truncated part of the Gaussian function exp the vaues arger than /+/ for even or arger than / +3/ gx as foows: { sin x gx : sin x on [0, /] 0 otherwise x with for odd. Now define Note that it suffices to prove that 0 g p 0 f p for p, which impies that, for p, p x g p f p R exp dx p, which provides the theorem. Note that for p 0, by Parseva s identity note that g is actuay the absoute vaue of the FT of the uniform probabiity distribution on {,,, }, we have g /. On the other hand, we caim that f /. In fact, for even, So it suffices to prove that f og e + x dx og e + x dx + 8 In fact, the eft hand side of 8 has the foowing estimation: og e + x dx og + e x dx og + e x xdx e x dx og Comparing this with the right hand side of 8, it suffices to prove that 8 5 +, + 4
which is ceary true by the fact that + + and that 8 <. For the case that 5 is odd, a simiar argument wi show that f /. Now it is enough to show that the corresponding distribution functions F and G satisfy the conditions of Lemma.3 with s 0. Observe that both f and g are bounded above by by the fact that sinnx n sinx. So we have F y Gy 0 for y, og + F 0 og + 3 < / G0 for a. for even for odd So we restrict y 0,. Then it is easy to compute the distribution function of f is: If is even, If is odd, F y F y og + og y og + 3 og y [ y [ y [ y [ y 0, /+/ ] 9 /+/, 0, / +3/ ] 0 / +3/, Now we wi estimate G. Note that gx s graph is ike a series of bumps with decreasing heights see Figure and. Consider y m : max [ m, m+ ] g for m {,, / } for even or m {,, / } for odd Note that y m is the peak of each bump. Ceary y m [ sin m+//, sin m/ ]. For x [0, /], by Lemma., gx < fx, which means that for y y,, Gy < F y. Combining this fact with F 0 < G0, we caim that F G must change sign at east once on [0, ]. To prove that the change of sign of F G occurs ony once, it suffices to prove that F G is increasing on 0, y, which is enough to prove that G y F y on 0, y. Ceary, for each y 0, y with y y j, G y x>0: gxy g x when y y m+, y m, the equation gx y has one root in 0, / and two roots in k/, k + /, k,, /. In particuar, if is odd and m /, then gx has possiby one root in /, see Figure for the case that is odd. We have,. If the root x k/, k + / for k, we caim that g x sin x x sin k/ 4k 5
Figure : Graph of gx and fx with 8, the red curve is gx, the bue curve is fx, and the y-vaues of the dashed horizonta ines are y, y, y 3, y ast from high to ow, where y ast is the ower bound of positive fx, see 4. Figure : Graph of gx and fx with 9. The y-vaues of the dashed horizonta ines are y, y, y 3, y 4, and y ast from high to ow In fact, g x cos x sin x sin x cos x sin x cos x sin x cos x sin x sin x cos x sinx k + sin x sin k/ + x sin x sin k/ k sin k/ sin x x sin k/ 4k where the ast step is by the fact that sin x x for x [0, /].. If the root x 0, /, we have g x cos x sin x sin x cos x sin x cos x cos x sin tan x tan x x
We caim that, for x 0, /, one aways has g x cos x cos x sin tan x tan x x In fact, it is easy to prove that tan x tan x for x 0,. On the other hand, if x,, tan x < 0, tan x > 0, but the common factor cos x < 0. By this observation, we have g x cos x cos x sin tan x tan x x cos x sin sin x tan x cos x x By the fact that tan x x for x 0, /, we caim that g x sin 3 In fact, g x cos x sin sin x x cos x x cos x x sin t sin tdt x 0 x sin tdt x 0 x sin x sin 4 sin 4 for. Now in order to combine these two cases, we define an extra y ast note that y ast is the ower bound of positive fx, See Figure and. we have two situations: y ast : { /+/ : y / / +3/ : y / for even for odd. y [0, y ast ]. For this case, reca 9 and 0, F y is constant on [0, y ast ], which means that F y is 0 on this interva. So naturay we have G y F y on this interva. 4 7
. y y ast, y. For this case, y must fa into some y m+, y m, where y m+ coud be y ast as in our definition 4. For every y y m+, y m, combine, and 3, G y + m k 4k 4m 5 where the term with negative sign is to avoid the case that is odd and m /, where gx has ony one root in /, / see Figure. Thus, On the other hand, we have G y + 4m F y og y y One obtains G y F y + 4m y og y Note that the function y og y is increasing on 0, e and decreasing on e,. Now reca that y sin/ 4 sin/4 < e, hence y og y increases on 0, y. Moreover, we caim that for y y m+, y m, one aways has y m+ 3. In fact, For the case that y m+ > y ast, one has y [ sin m+3// m+ 3. For the case that y m+ y ast, which means that m / for even or m / for odd. Thus we surey have y y ast by the definition m So we have, for, G y 5/ F y m m + 8 m + 3 og m + 3 m + 3 og m + 3 which is greater than if m 3. Now we have ony two cases eft: y y 3, y or y y, y. For the case that y y 3, y i.e. m, note that if, then gx y must have two roots on /, /. So we can actuay sharpen inequaities 5 and by: G y + m k 4k + 4m + m 8
Thus, by repeating the same steps, we obtain G y F y m + m + 8 og m + 3 m + 3 which is ceary greater than for m. For the case that y y, y, reca inequaities and 3 and the fact that gx y has one root in 0, / and two roots in /, /, we have G y sin + sin x sin note that the x in this inequaity is in /, / x sin + sin sin by the fact that sin x is decreasing for sma x x sin + cos, and the fact that y og y increases on 0, y, we have G sin y F y + cos 5 5 og sin cos og 5 which is greater than if 7. Now for, then by the series of inequaities after Thus, reca that y y 5, we have, for x /, /, g x + cos x sin x sin sin Note that the right hand side is increasing for x /, /3 by computing the derivative. Thus we have g x sin x Now by 3, we have Thus, G y F y 3 sin + cos x sin G y sin sin og Now, by appying Lemma.3, we have that for any p, / /3 p gx p dx fx p x dx < exp / /3 which provides the theorem. R > dx p 9
3 An -Rényi entropy power inequaity -EPI for integervaued random viabes Let us firsty introduce some notations. Let X be an integer vaued random variabe with probabiity mass function f, denote by MX Mf : f. Definition 3.. Let X be an integer vaued random variabe with probabiity mass function f. Define the -Rényi entropy H X by Define the -Rényi entropy power by H X H f : og f og Mf. N X N f : e H f Mf We woud ike to introduce our motivation for this section. In [4, 3], we derived a discrete version of Rogozin s convoution inequaity the continuous Eucidean case can be found in [4, 9]. We provide the resut as foows. Theorem 3. [4, 9]. ] Let X,, X n be independent integer vaued random variabes with MX i i +, i for some positive integer i, then MX + + X n MU + + U n, 7 where U i s are independent integer vaued random variabes uniformy supported on {,,, i }. This resut enabes us to reduce the estimation of MX + + X n to a discrete cube sicing probem. In particuar, if i s are the same i.e. MX i s are not far from each other, then the corresponding U i s in 7 are i.i.d random variabes uniformy distributed on {,,, i }. For this specia case, a direct resut by Mattner and Roos in [7, Theorem] which proved a sharp upper bound of Mf n for f uniform probabiity mass function on a discrete interva can be appied, which yieds the foowing partia resut. Theorem 3.3 [4, ] 9]. For independent integer vaued random variabes X,, X n with MX i +, for some fixed integer, N X i + N X i. 8 i In particuar, if a MX i, N i X i i N X i. 9 Remark 3.4. The constants in Theorem 3.3 are asymptoticay sharp as n and. In fact, as arge enough, then the constant, which is the optima constant by oca centra imit theorem. However, for the case that MX i s are far from each other, the argument of Mattner and Roos fais to appy. We wi have to use our main resut 5. We state this new -EPI as foows. i 0
Coroary ] 3.5. For independent integer vaued random variabes X,, X n with MX i i +, i for some integers i, denote min : min i i and max : max i i, and assume that min, then the foowing -EPI hods N X i min N X i 5 N X i 0 i min + 4 i i In particuar, if MX i / i, N X i min i min i N X i 35 7 N X i i Proof. By Theorem 3., we have MX + + X n MU + + U n, where U i s are independent integer vaued random variabes uniformy supported on {,,, i }. Let g i be the probabiity mass functions of U i, thus by Hausdorff-Young inequaity for discrete groups, we have MU + + U n Mg i g n D i i Now we have two cases:. Case : max j j /. Case : max j j > / For Case, et p i : and Theorem., j j i, then ceary p i and i p i, then by Höder s inequaity n D i D i p i i i n i p i i p i min min n i i which is exacty for this case. Furthermore, we have N X i min N U i i min i min i min i i + N X i min N X i min + i
which provides inequaity 0 for this case. For Case, by the fact that N n i U i N U j for each j, N U i max > N U i i i which provides inequaity for this case. Furthermore, N X i N U i > N U i i i i i i i + N X i min min + N X i min N X i min + which provides inequaity 0 for this case. i Remark 3.. In Coroary 3.5, it is easy to see that as min, the constant is asymptoticay, which is asymptoticay sharp in the sense that N X + X NX for the case that X is uniformy distributed on a discrete interva and X is the independent copy of X.
