arxiv:cond-mat/369v [cond-mat.dis-nn] 3 Feb 3 Brownian Motion in wedges, ast passage time and the second arc-sine aw Aain Comtet, and Jean Desbois nd February 8 Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modèes Statistiques. Université Paris-Sud, Bât., F-945 rsay Cedex, France. nstitut Henri Poincaré, rue Pierre et Marie Curie, 755, Paris Abstract We consider a panar Brownian motion starting from at time t = and stopped at t = and a set F = { i ; i =,,..., n} of n semi-infinite straight ines emanating from. Denoting by g the ast time when F is reached by the Brownian motion, we compute the probabiity aw of g. n particuar, we show that, for a symmetric F and even n vaues, this aw can be expressed as a sum of arcsin or arcsin) functions. The origina resut of Levy is recovered as the specia case n =. A reation with the probem of reaction-diffusion of a set of three partices in one dimension is discussed. The first arc-sine aw gives the distribution of the number of positive partia sums in a sequence of independent and identicay distributed random variabes. t was first discovered by P. Levy in his study of the inear Brownian motion and then discussed a ot for its reevance to the coin-tossing game []. The second arc-sine aw, aso discovered by P. Levy [], provides an information on the ast passage time which can be stated as foows. Consider a inear Brownian motion Bτ) starting at at time τ = and stopped at time t and et g be the ast time when is visited. The random variabe satisfies g = sup{ τ < t,bτ) = } ) Pg < u) = u arcsin ) t with the density Pu) = 3) ut u) ver the years, this resut has been extended in severa different directions see for instance, [3, 4]) and is sti a subject of active research in probabiity [5]. Generaizations of the first arcsine aw have aso been considered in different contexts one-dimensiona diffusion in a random medium [6], Brownian motion on graphs [7] and, aso, in two dimensions [8]).
The purpose of this Letter is to present a two dimensiona generaization of the aw ). As a byproduct of this resut we aso derive an expicit expression of the first passage time distribution which is reevant for a probem of reaction-diffusion invoving three identica partices. Exit probems for Brownian motion have a rich history and severa appications in physics see for instance [9]). They are in particuar reated with probems of capture of independent Brownian partices diffusing on the ine. This connection was first anticipated by Arratia [] and then discussed in the mathematics [, ] and physics itterature [9, 3, 4, 5] mainy in the context of reaction-diffusion modes. n the case of three partices, the process x t) x t), x t) x 3 t)) defines a certain diffusion in a quadrant of R. By a suitabe transformation, this process can be mapped on a diffusion inside a wedge whose ange depends on the diffusion constants. Using this correspondance, it has been shown that the first passage time through the wedge gives the surviva probabiity; a quantity which decays with a power aw which ony depends on the ange of the wedge [4, 6]. At the end of this work, we expoit this correspondance to compute exacty and not ony asymptoticay) the first coision time distribution for a three partice probem. ur approach is based on an identity reating the first passage and ast passage distribution which has an interesting probabiistic interpretation[7]. To begin with, et us start by considering, as in Figure, a wedge of apex and ange with a boundary F = { i ; i =,} and a two dimensiona Brownian motion r t) starting from at t = and stopped at t somewhere in the pane. We denote by g the ast time when F is visited and compute the probabiity Pg < u). Due to the scaing property of the Brownian motion, this distribution is a function of the reduced variabe u/t. n the foowing, we wi for simpicity set t =. r ) θ θ r ) Figure : The frontier F = {, } of the wedge divides the pane into regions, ) and ). Suppose that the partice reaches some point r at time t = u see Figure ). Ceary, if r beongs to region ) resp.)), the partice must stay in ) resp.)) between t = u and t = in order to satisfy the condition g < u. We can therefore write Pg < u) = P ) u) + P ) u) 4) Expressing the fact that the propagation is free between t = and t = u and that the partice has not hit the boundary between t = u and t =, we get P i) u) = i) d r i) d r r u e u G i) r,; r,u) ; i =, 5)
3 The propagator G ) satisfying the diffusion equation with Dirichet boundary conditions on F is given by G ) = u) m= sin mθ sin mθ e r +r ) rr u) m u where ν is a modified Besse function and the notations are defined on Figure. 6) Performing the spatia integrations in 5), we get [8] P ) u) = p,k= u p +k+ ] [Γp + k + ) Γ p + + k + ) k! P ) is obtained by the change in 7). Therefore, for arbitrary vaues of the aw Pg < u) is written in terms of a doube series. As a check, et us first consider the specia case =. We may write 7) Pg < u) = P ) u) = u/ p,k= u p+k k! [Γp + k + /)] p + k + )! 8) = arcsin u 9) The fact that one recovers Levy s second arc-sine aw is not surprising since, when =, F divides the pane into two haf-panes. Therefore the component of the Brownian motion parae to F factorises and pays no roe: we are thus eft with a one dimensiona probem. Coming back to genera vaues of, we can derive the behavior of the probabiity density P dpg<u) du ) when u and u. By using 4) and 7), one gets a power-aw behavior when u + Pu) u / for = ) Pu) Cµ) u µ for ) [ Γ µ )] ) Γµ + ) with Cµ) = µ and µ = µ = when < < 3) when < < 4) Now, for the imit u, using asymptotic expansions for Γ functions and aso an equivaence between series and integras, we get Pu) u 5) i.e. the same behavior as for 3). The expression 5) doesn t depend on and we have aready seen that = gives the Levy s aw. Remark that u corresponds to Brownian curves
4 that stop cose to F. Therefore, between t = u and t =, the Brownian partice ony sees an infinitesima part of F, i.e. a straight ine as for =. This is, in our opinion, why the resut 5) doesn t depend on. Actuay, it ony depends on the fact that the pane is divided by F into two regions. We wi come back to this point atter on. i i+ i i n n Figure : F consists in n semi-infinite straight ines starting from. To go further, et us remark that for F = { i ; i =,,...,n} as in Figure, 4) becomes simpy: Pg < u) = n i= P i) u) 6) Repace by i in 7) in order to get P i) ). Let us now speciaize to the situation when F is symmetric and n is even n ). n that case, F consists in infinite straight ines crossing at point and dividing the pane into equa anguar sectors, each one of ange = /. a) = b) =3 Figure 3: F is symmetric. The anaytic form of Pg < u) wi depend on the parity of. Thus, it wi be different for the cases a) and b). For further expanations, see text.
5 Equation 6) writes Pg < u) P u) = u / u p p= k= [Γp + k + /)] p + + k)! u k k! 7) being an integer, we can sum the series and, finay, get P u) = P u) = k= k= arcsin ) ucos k ), odd 8) )) ) ucos k, even 9) ) k arcsin which is the centra resut of this paper. We remark that the correct sma u behavior for P u) foows from the two identities k= k= cos k ) m =, odd, m =,3,..., ) ) k cos k ) m =, even, m =,,4,..., ) n particuar P u) = arcsin u ) P u) = 4 ) arcsin u = P 3) P 3 u) = 6 arcsin ) u u arcsin 4) P 4 u) = 8 ) arcsin ) u ) u arcsin 5) P 5 u) = arcsin u arcsin cos ) u + arcsin cos )) u 6) 5 5 These functions are dispayed beow in Figure 4. As expected, the Levy s second arc-sine aw is recovered in ). Moreover, the resut 3) is straightforward since, when =, the components of the Brownian motion factorize. Thus, for =, arcsin) functions appear. What is surprising is that they wi appear each time is even whie being absent when is odd. For the probabiity density, P dp du ), with 8) and 9), we obtain: P u) u when u 7) This is consistent with 5) that corresponds to =.
6.8 P u).6.4 = Figure 4: The distribution functions P u) for =,...,5. u We now present a formua which reates the first passage and the ast passage time distribution. The starting point is 4) and 5) which may be rewritten as Pg < u) = PrT > u r ) r u e u r dr 8) where PrT > u) r ) is the probabiity distribution of the first passage time T through F, given that the process starts at r. Then, by scaing one has PrT > u) r ) = PrT > u) r ) 9) By a simpe change of variabes it foows that Pg < + t ) = PrT > t x ) e x dx 3) Therefore Pg < + t ) = Ee t T ) 3) which is a reation between the first passage characteristic function for a process starting at r = and the probabiity distribution of the ast passage time. nterestingy enough this formua can aso be derived in a more intrinsic fashion using ony time inversion and scaing [7]. As an appication, et us the derive the density of first passage time in a wedge of ange = 3. n the context of the capture probem mentioned in the introduction, this corresponds to a set of three identica and independent partices []. n this case, the distribution Pg) is given in eq 4). By an inverse Lapace transform 3) gives the density of first passage time: ft) = 6 T 3 e T T e y 8T dy e y dy ) 3) ne can check that this formua is in agreement with 6) of [] which expresses the first coision time probabiity for a given set of initia conditions. By averaging this formua over the ange and setting r = one recovers 3).
